Places to see in ( Horncastle - UK )
Horncastle is a market town in Lincolnshire, England, 17 miles east of the county town of Lincoln. Roman Horncastle has become known recently as Banovallum (i.e. Wall on the River Bain) – this name has been adopted by several local businesses and by the town's secondary modern school.
It lies to the south of the Lincolnshire Wolds, where the (north–south) River Bain meets the River Waring (from the east), and north of the West and Wildmore Fens. The south of Horncastle is called Cagthorpe. Langton Hill is to the west. It used to be part of Horncastle Rural District in the Parts of Lindsey, but is now in the district council of East Lindsey, based in Manby, east of Louth.
North of the town, the civil parish meets West Ashby and Low Toynton, south of Milestone House on the A153 (Louth Road). The boundary skirts the east of the town, crossing Low Toynton Road, following the Viking Way then meeting the River Waring. It briefly follows north of the A158, to a caravan park, where it meets High Toynton. Southwards on Mareham Road it meets Mareham on the Hill, east of Stonehill Farm. South of the town, and north of Telegraph House, it meets Scrivelsby, following High Lane westwards to cross the B1183, south of Loxley Farm, then the A153 and skirts the southern edge of the sewage works next to the River Bain where it meets Roughton (Thornton). It follows the Old River Bain west of the A153 northwards across the river meadows, crossing the Horncastle Canal (and Viking Way). Eastwards it crosses the B1191, south of Langton Hill, where at Lowmoor Lane it meets Langton. It follows Langton Lane northwards, with Mill House Farm (Langton Mill) to the west, meeting Thimbleby. It meets the B1190 where the pylons cross the road then the A158 at the B1190 junction, briefly following Accommodation Road to the east. It skirts the north of the town, briefly following Elmhurst Road, passing south of Elmlea Farm. and straight through Elmhirst Lakes. At the River Bain near Hemingby Lane, it meets West Ashby.
Lincolnshire Integrated Voluntary Emergency Service is based at the Boston Road Industrial Estate. The Lincolnshire Wildlife Trust is based in Banovallum House. Mortons of Horncastle is a major national magazine publisher of classic motorcycles, aviation and road transport heritage titles, situated in the south of the town on the industrial estate off the A153 (Boston Road).
Horncastle sits at the crossroads of two of Lincolnshire's major roads: the A158 runs west-east, joining the county town of Lincoln with the resort of Skegness on the Lincolnshire coast; the A153 joins Louth in the north with Sleaford and Grantham in the south. These two roads meet at the Bull Ring in the centre of Horncastle.
The A158 through Horncastle becomes busy during the summer holidays, as holidaymakers travel between Horncastle and Skegness. To alleviate pressure on the town centre caused by the traffic, a relief road, Jubilee Way, was constructed in the 1970s. Minor roads run from Horncastle to Bardney, Boston (via Revesby), Fulletby and Woodhall Spa.
Horncastle is home to a hub for the InterConnect rural bus service. Regular buses run to Lincoln, Skegness and across the Wolds. The Viking Way long-distance footpath also runs through Horncastle. Horncastle Canal, based upon the River Bain, was constructed from 1792 and opened in 1802.

Five years ago this mound-like feature was rediscovered in thick woodland by history lover and former teacher Lynda Mallett, along with husband Stuart Reddish and John Wood, all from Rainworth, using an original perambulation document dated to 1816.
Their research has also suggested that it may once have marked the boundary between the Anglo Saxon kingdoms of Mercia and Northumbria.
After reporting the intriguing find to local history society members in Clipstone, Warsop and Edwinstowe, a new group was formed to work with forest chiefs to investigate the site's significant history and encourage wider community appreciation and involvement. A topographical survey will take place this autumn and there will be open days for the general public.

My vlogging camera is a GoPro Hero 9 but I also use my pixel 6a phone and Lumix G80 camera for other footage
For editing, I used Premiere Pro on an old laptop but I’m saving to buy a more powerful computer.
Do you have children?
Yes I have a 6yr old daughter who lives with her mum but I see her quite a lot. I don’t usually put her on the vlogs and if I do, I block out her face for privacy reasons. I also have a grown up son.
How do you fund your lifestyle?
I don’t need as much to live these days since going full time van life but I receive a small percentage of income from the ads that YouTube put on the videos.

RAINWORTH: Newark and Sherwood Parish #82 of 84
NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #82: RAINWORTH
Welcome to one of those place which whose name is continually mispronounced by many. This is Rainworth, and I guess we have to start by explain why its not Rain Worth. In the year 617 AD, a mighty Roman warrior, named Readwald, stayed here prior to a battle with Ethelfrith, King of Mercia. In the battle, Readwald's son, Regehere, was killed, and from that day, the area was known as Regehere's Wath, Wath of course the name given to a ford or a crossing point over a river as we’ve learned in other episodes.
Over the years, the spelling of the name has changed, eventually morphing into Reynwath by 1268. From there it’s commuted again to the present day spelling. Theoretically, to call it Rainworth is not incorrect, given this bit of history, but local dialect has once again changed it into “Renneth”.
So now we’ve cleared that up, what’s here? Well, Rainworth is perhaps best known for being a mining village. This was the site of the enormous Rufford Colliery, which would vastly increase the size of the village from what was originally a quiet hamlet with just 13 houses in the 16th century, to a thriving metropolis by the 1960s. Rufford would stop producing coal in 1993, and since then Rainworth has shown signs of industrial decline. That said, its bouncing back now, and is becoming a desirable place to live.

A617 #3 Rainworth - Newark
Third part covering full length of the A617 from Chesterfield begins where the Rainworth bypass ends at a small roundabout offering village access. Heading onward onto Kirklington Road is where the A617 regains its old single carriageway route to complete the journey into Newark.
Its now mainly a 50mph procession after crossing the A614 , but still gives a refreshing ride meandering through open countryside.
Allow larger vehicle full turning room when crossing the river Trent over an old and narrow Kelham bridge. Newark Rugby Club occupies grounds approaching the A46 roundabout that ends the A617.
However, turning right onto the Great North Road soon presents grand sight over Newark Bridge of its ancient Castle.
B6020 Mansfield - Rainworth
This reclassified 2 mile urban addition to an existing B6020 between Kirkby-in-Ashfield into Rainworth adds oddity in having three access points. Its a nostalgic ride from Mansfield off the A6191 in order to complete original course of the A617 from when Rainworth was a popular through road for holiday makers seeking the east coast.
A rerouted section of the A617 has since created Rainworth Bypass, links from and to which this short section of B6020 still connects through Rainworth when veering left at the lights. Speed humps since discourage regular use of this downgraded residential thoroughfare, although the full B6020 for Blidworth is signed straight on and then first right.
Stagecoach East Midlands 29 Full Route Visual- Newark to Southwell
Hey, here's a full route visual of the old 29 route, which ran from Newark Bus Station to Southwell, Norwood Gardens, via Newark Castle, Kelham, Averham, Upton and Easthorpe.
It ran hourly, and used to be operated out of the Newark outstation, which is an outstation to Lincoln depot.
I believe the 29 still runs, however it's just a journey or two a day now (and it continues on to Mansfield too). However, back during February 2019, I managed to film this when the 29 complimented the 28 between Newark and Southwell.

The Mansfield and Southwell branch of the Midland Railway. Initially opening east of Southwell in 1847 before extending to Mansfield in 1871. We'll cover this branch in two videos, with this one as far as Rainworth and the White Post.
We start in Mansfield town centre on the side of the Robin Hood Line. First we cross the Drury Dam Viaduct, built in 1971.

The section through the suburbs of Mansfield is largely erased however there are a few things to point out. We see colliery lines leave for Mansfield Colliery, Rufford Colliery and Blidworth Colliery and remember the former station at Rainworth.

RUFFORD: Newark and Sherwood Parish #76 of 84
NEWARK AND SHERWOOD PARISH #76: RUFFORD
Welcome to Rufford, which is one of the smallest villages in Newark and Sherwood, yet commands the largest area of any parish in the district. That fact is due to the sheer size of Rufford Country Park, an enormous tract of land which was all part of the Rufford Estate. Mind you, if you think the land it covers now is extensive, think again. At its peak, the Rufford Estate covered approximately 29 square miles.
Following the dissolution of the monasteries, Rufford Abbey and its land was granted to the Earl of Shrewsbury. George Talbot, husband to Bess of Hardwick and The 6th Earl, George Talbot, transformed the old abbey into a country house. It was then often visited by James I and Charles I who liked to hunt in Sherwood Forest.
In 1626 the house passed to the Savile family who continued to improve both it and the estate it sits within. The Savile’s had a hand in many of Ruffords most well known features like the mill, the lake, and even the roads that run around it. Famed for many a reason, the best bit about Rufford Country Park is that today, its all completely free to walk around.

Blidworth colliery to Clipstone Junction Railway Cycle
Starting off on the former site of Blidworth Colliery, we head on along the long closed railway towrds Rufford Colliery. Once passed here, we jump onto the former Midland line that served Rufford Colliery and eventually met up with the Mansfield to Southwell line. Before leaving this line, we pass under the long closed Mansfield Railway that ran between Clipstone Junction and Mansfield.
Passing under the 2 access lines into Clipstone Colliery, we then run alongside the line all the way to Clipstone Junctions, where we meet up with the Lancashire, Derbyshire & East Coast Railway.

PAPPLEWICK: Gedling Parish #1 of 12
GEDLING PARISH #1: PAPPLEWICK
Welcome to Gedling everyone! We begin this small district of Nottinghamshire with Papplewick – and I reckon there was no better place to start! A small village, it lies 7 and a half miles North of Nottingham and 6 miles south of Mansfield. In the Middle Ages, the village marked the southern gateway to Sherwood Forest. It’s within a loosely defined area known as The Hidden Valleys, an area of interesting historical and scenic value between Nottingham and Mansfield. Once again we’re in a place with some Robin Hood themed legends, as Papplewick is said to be the burial place of Alan-a-Dale, another of the outlaw’s Merry Men.
Papplewick is a lovely place. Most of it’s historic core is a conservation area, and its full of fabulous 18th-century cottages. Amenities wise it has a village hall, an ancient church, and a pub called The Griffin's Head. Tourist attractions in the parish include Papplewick Hall, and the pretty Papplewick Trail which has some waterfalls!
However, we’re beginning this episode at the parish’s biggest and best landmark – Papplewick Pumping Station, which I was lucky enough to be allowed access to, to film! Built to pump clean water to a reservoir which would supply the City of Nottingham, it’s one of those places that’s a must if you visit.
It’s a wonderful part of the county all ends up, so let’s go and check it out!
