New Mexico's parks are less crowded many other western parks but still have stunning scenery. On this trip we drive from South to North. Starting by exploring 3 of the least visited National Parks in the country- White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mts..
In Alamogordo we visit New Mexico's Space History Museum and see rockets tested at the nearby missile range.
We go to one of my favorite places- 3 Rivers Petroglyphs site to hike among 20,000 ancient rock carvings and meet a blind lady in her 70 who enjoys hiking!
On the road north we go to the UFO museum in Roswell. And then walk on a Lava Field at the Valley of Fires BLM camping area, before visiting the Trinity Site.
In Albuquerque we visit the 4 sites of Petroglyph Monument including a volcano field! While looking at a map I saw a marker for Coronado State Park, so we make an unscheduled stop to see the remains an old adobe village on the Rio Grande where Spanish Conquistador Coronado once stayed- until the battle.
We make a quick stop at a stone church built in 1621. On our way to Super Volcano- or at least its remains-- Valles Caldera.
The highlight of the northern part of the trip is the cliff dwellings at Bandelier National Monument. We visit the cliff houses and see the nearby stone village.
We make a quick stop in Santa Fe and another in Taos before flying over the spectacular Rio Grande Gorge Bridge before our final stop on top of a cinder cone volcano and Capulin Volcano National Monument.

Rio Grande Gorge - Road Trip to Taos New Mexico
Rio Grande Gorge - Road Trip to Taos New Mexico
In this video we are taking a road trip up the Rio Grande Gorge to visit Taos New Mexico. There are several scenic routes to Taos, and on this trip we are driving along what is known as the ‘Low Road to Taos’ which is highway 68 from Espanola and it follows the Rio Grande river. We’ll stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center and make our way to the scenic Rio Grande Gorge Bridge.
There are two scenic routes to Taos from the Santa Fe area. These are coined the 'high road' to Taos and the 'low road' to Taos. In this video, I take the low road to Taos which follows the river along highway 68.
At the town of Pilar we stop at the Rio Grande Gorge Visitor Center to learn more about the recreational opportunities, history, and artifacts found in the area. Several rafting outfitters leave from this parking lot. This is also a great place to stop for the restroom!
Continuing on through Taos, the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is located 11 miles NW of Taos on Highway 64. This bridge has been featured in several notable movies- this was the place Mickey and Mallory were married in the 1994 film Oliver Stone movie: Natural Born Killers featuring Woody Harrelson and Juliette Lewis.

White Sands and the Parks of New Mexico's Rio Grande Rift- part 1 Introduction to the new series.
My channel is dedicated to helping you explore the West. This is my next feature length Travel Guide to New Mexico and the parks in the Rio Grande Rift- it makes a great road trip.
The series will cover White Sands National Park, Carlsbad Caverns National Park, Guadalupe Mountains National Park, 3 Rivers Petroglyph Site, Valley of Fires St. Park, Trinity Site, Coronado State Historic Park, Petroglyph National Monument, Bandolier National Monument, Valles Caldera National Monument, Jemez Historical Park, Rio Grande Gorge Bridge and Capulin Volcanos National Monument.
This series is full of beautiful images and well researched information by Travel Photographer and Writer Steve Salis. New Mexico is less crowded than other places in the west, so if you're tired of waiting to get in a park New Mexico is perfect.
The area is rich in pre-Columbian culture and we'll visit several places where they lived and left their mark. It took over 14 days to shoot and hundreds of hours to edit by a professional video producer. Please leave comments to let me know what you think.
Rio Grande Gorge
The Rio Grande Gorge is a geological feature in northern New Mexico where the watercourse of the Rio Grande follows a tectonic chasm. Beginning near the Colorado border, the approximately 50-mile (80 km) gorge runs from northwest to southeast of Taos, New Mexico, through the basalt flows of the Taos Plateau volcanic field. The gorge depth is 800 feet (240 m) just south of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, which spans the gorge 10 miles (16 km) northwest of Taos. #riogrande #exploring
Rio Grande
The Rio Grande is one of the principal rivers in the southwest United States and northern Mexico. The Rio Grande begins in south-central Colorado in the United States and flows to the Gulf of Mexico. After passing through the length of New Mexico along the way, it forms part of the Mexico–United States border

Hiking Along the Rio Grande River Gorge Near Taos, New Mexico
We take a chill hike along The Rio Grande Gorge in The Rio Grande del Norte National Monument located 10 miles northwest of Taos, New Mexico.
Starting near the Colorado border, the Rio Grande Gorge, carved from millions of years of erosion, runs 50 miles through the Taos Plateau volcanic field within the Rio Grande Rift.
This location was also used by NASA as training for the Apollo Astronauts in 1971 due to the similarities to the Apollo 15 landing site.
The gorge depth is 800 feet just south of the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, built from 1963 to 1965. You may recognize the bridge featured in a few films—Natural Born Killers, Twins, Paul, Wild Hogs and Terminator Salvation (just to name a few).

Hiking to Mexico at Big Bend National Park || Rio Grande Village Nature Trail
This was a quick add on to our backpacking trip in the Chisos Mountains of Big Bend National Park. We decided to make the drive down to Rio Grande Village and do the short hike out to the Rio Grande River, the international boundary between Texas and Mexico. This is a really easy hike that has quite a few interesting features.
The Rio Grande Village Nature Trail is accessed directly from the Rio Grande Village Campground on the far south end of Big Bend National Park.
Be sure and check out our backpacking trip to the south rim as well:
