From South to North-1h. Veliky Novgorod. Novgorod Kremlin.

Veliky Novgorod (colloquial: Novgorod; until 1999, the official name was Novgorod) is a city located in the Northwestern Federal District of Russia. The administrative center of the Novgorod Oblast, as well as the Novgorod District, of which it is not a part, having the status of a city of regional significance and forming the urban district of Veliky Novgorod with a single settlement in its composition. City of military glory. Veliky Novgorod is one of the oldest cities in Russia, according to one of the chronicle versions (in the Novgorod First Chronicle) the place where the Varangians were called (traditionally associated with the birth of Russian and Russian statehood) and the first capital of Rus'. In the Middle Ages, it was the second most important center of Kievan Rus after Kyiv, in the 12th-15th centuries it was the capital of the Novgorod Republic until its subordination to the Moscow Principality in 1478, and then the center of the Novgorod land as part of the Russian Tsardom.

The official date of the foundation of Novgorod is considered to be 859, according to the first mention of the city in the late Nikon Chronicle (16th century). In the Tale of Bygone Years, created in the 12th century, the city is first mentioned in 862. However, the chronicles could attribute the existence of the city to this time retrospectively, since reliably dated archaeological layers of Novgorod date back to the time no earlier than the 930s. According to archaeologists, Novgorod appeared around the turn of the 9th-10th centuries or at the beginning of the 10th century at the source of the Volkhov from Ilmen. In the second quarter of the 10th century, the first bridge across the Volkhov was built.

Novgorod Detinets (also Novgorod Kremlin) is a fortress of Veliky Novgorod. Detinets is located on the left bank of the Volkhov River. The first chronicle mention of it dates back to 1044. It is an architectural monument of federal significance, protected by the state. Novgorod Detinets as part of the historical center of Veliky Novgorod is included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
The northern part of the modern Detinets was once a delta formed by a tributary of the Volkhov with two branches, the territory of which was divided into two sections with an island position. G. M. Shtender assumed that the very first fortress occupied the middle part of the modern Detinets in the sector between the Vladimir and Prechistenskaya towers (that is, the central island).
The replacement of the wooden Detinets with a stone one was completed in the 30s of the 14th century. In 1437, part of the Sofia Belfry collapsed due to a spring flood, but two years later this part of the wall and the bell tower were restored.

A radical reconstruction of the Detinets took place in 1478 under the Grand Duke of Moscow Ivan III, when Veliky Novgorod became part of the Grand Duchy of Moscow (due to the development of artillery, the loopholes of the Detinets were not convenient enough to accommodate firearms). The reconstruction was undertaken with the joint funds of Ivan III and the Novgorod Archbishop Gennady. Construction was completed in 1490. The reconstruction of the Detinets was so significant that it was essentially built anew.

On May 7, 1862, a large section of the wall collapsed towards the Volkhov, a significant part of which had been rebuilt two years earlier. Its emergency condition was first noted in the mid-17th century. The fortress wall was rebuilt from new bricks without any adherence to ancient forms. For the sake of economy, it was made much thinner and with very deep niches. Part of the new wall was occupied by rooms arranged inside the wall for the Treasury Chamber archive.

This time we headed to the lake. Lake Ilemen, located in the center of Novgorod. Ancient Russians have used the lake as an important route from the Baltic to the Dnieper and Volga rivers. It is a place of life for the common people living around the lake. The boat came in during the night. There are about 30 kinds of fish caught here. The weight of the fish caught today seems to be about 100kg. It is so big that it can not believe that it is freshwater fish. Larger fish are often caught. The size varies depending on the type of fish. I just caught a 1.5 meter fish. I was very big. I almost did my key. We can catch big meat that is big enough for you. The fish caught here must be dried for long periods of storage. I also ate dried fish. The salty and sweet taste was similar to dried pollack. I went up on the boat. It is in full swing after fishing. Lake Ilemen is often windy and often sails with sails.

USSR 1961 archive footage

Archival footage shot by Otto Wolf, a Swiss filmmaker, while visiting Europe in 1961. It contains stock footage of various places around the USSR.

There are two different routes in this footage.

Route 1. From Smolensk to Moscow on Minsk Highway (M1 Belarus). All the villages shown are in Smolensk oblast.

00:14 - a GAZ-51 truck with old license plate painted on its body (used until 1959).

00:22 - a copy of the sculpture Lenin and Stalin in Gorki (1937, by Ukrainian sculptors Belostotskiy, Pivovarov, Fridman). There were THOUSANDS of them in the USSR, but almost all had been demolished by 1962 when Stalin started to also be criticized in the Soviet Union.

00:30 - a Great Patriotic War mass grave and memorial somewhere near the bank of the Dnieper river.

01:02 - a GAZ-51 truck with new license plate (index СМП - Smolenskaya oblast).

01:07 - a sculpture of a miner.

01:14 - view from Minsk Highway on Shakhta-4 village (now inside Safonovo locality). There were a lot of brown coal mines in the region, which worked intensely till the commissioning of gas pipelines on Siberia in 1970-80s, when they became unprofitable.

02:03 - a transport arch at the entrance to the Gzhatsk district. The town of Gzhatsk was renamed Gagarin in 1968 after his death (the district is his homeland).

02:54 - A 1000 kilometer mark in the street: it is a distance from Brest (on the USSR border with Poland) to Moscow. It was probably placed near the military town of Krasnoznamensk. The indirect confirmation is a column of military transport on Minsk Highway at 03:01.

Route 2. From Moscow to Novgorod on the Leningrad Highway (M10 Russia).

03:04 - street sign indicating distances: Solnechnogorsk - 45 km, Klin - 67 km, Leningrad - 700 km. This sign was at the border along the Moscow Ring Road in Khimki.

03:08 - Nikolskaya church (built in 1879) in Solnechnogorsk ('Sunny mountain town') in Moskovskaya oblast. Then the villages of Tverskaya oblast.

03:23 - War mass grave near Smolino village (146 km M-10).

03:33 - Emmauss village war memorial (152 km M-10). Villages of Tverskaya and Novgorodskaya oblast.

04:27 - Proletariy village (30 km from Novgorod-Velikiy). At the time it was on Leningrad Highway. Today M10 is 7 km east of it.

05:57 - Probably a gulf of Lake of Ilmen in the suburbs of Novgorod.
