Probolinggo (Indonesian: Kota Probolinggo, Madurese: Prabâlingghâ) is a city on the north coast of East Java province, Indonesia. It covers an area of 56.676 sq. km, and had a population of 217,062 at the 2010 census and 239,649 at the 2020 census;[5] the official estimate as at mid 2022 was 243,200 (comprising 120,545 males and 122,655 females). It is surrounded on the landward side by Probolinggo Regency of which it was formerly the capital, but it is now not part of the regency.
Like most of northern East Java, the city has a large Madurese population in addition to many ethnically Javanese people. It is located on one of the major highways across Java, and has a harbor that is heavily used by fishing vessels.
Under the Dutch East Indies colonial administration, especially in the 19th century, Probolinggo was a lucrative regional center for refining and exporting sugar, and sugar remains an important product of the area.
The city is famous for its mangoes, locally called mangga manalagi. Strong dry-season winds from July to September, the angin gending, help the mango trees pollinate and are sometimes credited with being the source of the area's quality fruit. The city formerly produced grapes as well, but few grapes are grown in the area now.
The motto of the city is Bestari which is an abbreviation of bersih (cleanliness), sehat (healthy), tertib (orderly), aman (safe), rapi (neat), and indah (beautiful).
In Negarakertagama, the city was called Banger which means bad odor in Javanese. In 1770, Regent Joyonagoro changed the city's name to Probolinggo. The name derives from praba (light) and lingga ([symbol of] masculinity). Another version of the etymology is that the name derives from prabu (king) and linggih (stop by).
Colonial era
As a result of Mataram's involvement in Geger Pacinan (and subsequent war), Dutch East India Company signed an agreement with Sunan Pakubuwono II on 11 November 1743 to hand over most of eastern Java, including Probolinggo, to the former.
In 1811, under Dutch East Indies' Governor General Daendels rule, Probolinggo was sold to a Chinese man Han Tik-Ko. The agreed price was 1 million ringgit paid in installment for 10 years. He then was given titles of Mayor Cina (Chinese mayor) and Tuan Tanah Probolinggo (Probolinggo Lanlord) that had similar authority as bupati (regent). Meanwhile, Probolinggo resident called him Babah Tumenggung.
Under Han Tik-Ko, Probolinggo residents were not satisfied of Han Tik-Ko since he imposed heavy tax to them. As a result, on 18 May 1813, a clash happened between the rebellious residents and Han Tik-Ko people. The event was called Perang Kedopok/Kepruk Cino (Kedopok War/Hit the Chinese) in which Han Tik-Ko was killed. The Dutch East Indies Lieutenant Governor Stamford Raffles then bought back the city from Han Tik-Ko's family.
The ruler of Probolinggo between 1818 and 1821 was Raden Tumenggung Aryo Notoadiningrat, while in 1823 the ruler was Raden Tumenggung Panji Notonegoro.

Kota Probolinggo (Madura: Prabâlingghâ, Pegon: ڤراباْليڠڮا, Hanacaraka: ꦥꦿꦧꦭꦶꦁꦒ) adalah sebuah kota di Provinsi Jawa Timur, Indonesia. Terletak sekitar 100 km sebelah tenggara Surabaya, Kota Probolinggo berbatasan dengan Selat Madura di sebelah utara, serta Kabupaten Probolinggo di sebelah timur, selatan, dan barat. Probolinggo merupakan kota terbesar keempat di Jawa Timur setelah Surabaya, Malang, dan Kediri menurut jumlah penduduk, dan jumlah penduduk kota ini pada tahun 2021 berjumlah 242.246 jiwa.Kota ini terletak di wilayah Tapal Kuda, Jawa Timur dan menjadi jalur utama pantai utara yang menghubungkan Pulau Jawa dengan Pulau Bali.
Etimologi
Probolinggo yang ada hubungannya dengan cerita kuno, yaitu jatuhnya sebuah benda bercahaya (meteor). Tempat jatuhnya benda tersebut oleh raja-raja dahulu dipilih sebagai tempat untuk mendapatkan perdamaian dan mengakhiri perselisihan.
Probo dalam bahasa Sanskerta berarti sinar, sedang Lingga berarti tanda, dalam hal ini tanda perdamaian. Dapat juga diartikan: asli atau sederhana (seperti perwujudan seluruh lambang yang sederhana).

This Java Travel Documentary is the first part of a Documentary Series called „Indonesia is not only Bali“. While many visitors mainly focus on Bali alone, Indonesia with its more than 17,000 islands offers a wealth of incredible destinations each with its unique charm and attractions.
Therefore my plan was to visit a number of different destinations to showcase the diversity of the country to the best of my ability. I’ll be starting my trip off with the largest island, called Java where I’ll be exploring the cities of Jakarta and Yogyakarta to understand the historical and religious background before meeting my friends from Portugal and heading into the nature to see volcanoes, waterfalls and some of the largest jungle temples in the world.

INDONESIA - Highlights and best Places - Backpacking Trip in 4K
Indonesia is huge. So 2 Month is not enough to travlel whole Indonesia. But we loved it. Such a nice Country with so many Islands, friendly and nice People and amazing nature.
We traveled with small backpacks and a small budget. The tours in Indonesia are expensive, so we skip some of them.
For longer distances we traveled by ferries, trains and buses. Its really easy and comfortable to travel like this.
For the shorter distances or daytrips we rented a scooter or took Grab.
We started in Sumatrha and got to Flores. Unfortunately we didn't have enough time to travel to Sulawesi and Raja Ampat. We really liked Indonesia and we will definitely visit the rest again.

The Journey To The Majestic Mountain Of Bromo
Bromo Mountain
Bromo mountain, is the most popular destination in Indonesia that always been visited by both local or foreign. Bromo Mountain is an active volcanic mountain, located in Probolinggo regency, East Java. At 2,329 meters (7,641 ft) it is not the highest peak after all, but is the most well know mountain.
The area is one of the most visited tourist attractions in East Java, Indonesia. The volcano belongs to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park. The name of Bromo derived from Javanese pronunciation of Brahma, the Hindu creator god.
Mount Bromo sits in the middle of a vast plain called the Sea of Sand ( in Javanese: Segara Wedi or in Indonesian: Lautan Pasir), which is a protected nature reserve since 1919. The main gate to the sea of sand and mount Bromo is through Cemorolawang. This is the most crowded visiting area, especially on holidays. There are many kinds activities that could be carried on this area such as; Camping, watchhng the scenery, horse riding to sea of sand or walking.
The origin of the ritual lies in the 15th century legend where a princess named Roro Anteng started the principality of Tengger with her husband, Joko Seger. The couple was childless and therefore prays the assistance of the mountain gods.
Fortunately, the gods granted them 24 children but stipulated that the 25th child, named Kesuma, must be thrown into the volcano as human sacrifice. The gods' request was implemented. The tradition of throwing sacrifices into the volcano to appease these ancient deities continues today and called Yadnya Kasada ceremony. Though fraught with danger, some locals risk climbing down into the crater in an attempt to recollect the sacrificed goods that believed could bring them good luck.
How to go to Mount Bromo with a Tour? Our journey from Yogyakarta
It's time to explore another part of the beautiful Indonesia. We are going to book a Mount Bromo tour to see the Mount Bromo volcano! To do so, we are going to take the train from Yogyakarta to the city of Probolinggo. From there, we will book a tour with the hotel for the next day. We were thinking of visiting all by ourselves but as it is our first time visiting a volcano and we want to catch the sunrise, we thought that a tour will be a more convenient way.

MOUNT BROMO TOUR: Hiking An ACTIVE VOLCANO On Java, Indonesia (what to expect!)
We arrived on Java, Indonesia and one of the first things we really wanted to do is a MOUNT BROMO sunrise tour – definitely one of the highlights of our trip! Mount Bromo is an active volcano that’s on most traveller’s bucket list visiting Java – and in this video we’re showing you what to expect and if it’s worth it to get up at 1:30am to see the sunrise over Mt Bromo and then hike up to the crater (Spoiler: it definitely is!).
We start the video in Probolinggo where we first have to fight a cockroach and then get some delicious (super spicy) fried chicken dinner. We then prepare for the tour and for getting up very early at 1:30am - although nothing really prepares you for that. And then the tour begins, but… see for yourself!

This is the Mount Bromo tour we did:
We stayed at Clover Homestay in Probolinggo, which also offers Mt Bromo tours and they’re very friendly! The rooms are very basic and can get a bit loud in the night (and the cockroach situation wasn’t the best start to our stay unfortunately). Overall it’s ok for a night or two if you don’t expect a lot of luxury, but they could be better. The tour itself was great and we really liked that we didn’t have to worry about anything. With 4 people on the tour the tour cost us 28€ per person, which definitely isn’t that cheap. A significant portion of the cost goes towards the entrance fee for the National park surrounding Bromo. If you do this tour on your own there are ways to get around this fee, but it’s a lot more hassle to organise. So we’re really happy that we did the tour!
