10 Things to do in Porto, Portugal Travel Guide Video Transcript: (OPORTO)

Lisbon is beautiful, but Porto is magical. We arrived in Porto with our taxi driver’s words still ringing in our ears, and we’re happy to say, the city did not disappoint!

Our time in Porto was spent sipping on Port wine, soaking in the views across the Douro River, wandering through the hilly streets, and marvelling at buildings covered in blue tiles.

In this travel guide, we’re going to share a little bit of Porto’s magic with you, and also show you some of the things you too can see, eat, and drink when you visit Porto!

Known as the Chapel of Souls, this church is covered in tiles that represent moments in the life of Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Catherine.

This bookstore is a feast for the eyes. The bookstore was even frequented by JK Rowling when she taught English in Porto, and it’s reported to have been an inspiration in her Harry Potter series.

We continued our walk downhill until we reached the São Bento Train Station.

Porto Cathedral is one of the oldest landmarks in the city with cloisters where the walls are covered in blue tiles.

We reached the neighbourhood of Ribeira, which sits right on the shores of the Douro River. This neighbourhood is lined with many sidewalk cafes, bars, and restaurants, so it’s a nice place to rest your legs and do a bit of people watching. Feeling hungry we wandered down some of the back streets until we found a small restaurant serving up local specialities.

We made time for one more attraction: the Church of Saint Francis.

The Bridge we had all been waiting for was Dom Luis the first Bridge, which spans the Douro River. The lower deck carries regular traffic with narrow walkways for those on foot, and the upper deck is reserved for pedestrians and the metro lines.

For the best views of Porto, you need to walk the upper deck!

There was only one thing on our minds: visit one of the many wineries that line this side of the river! We ended up walking into Croft for a wine tasting without need for an appointment, and this turned out to be one of our favourite activities in Porto!

Filled to the brim with port wine, cheese and chocolate, we enjoyed a light stroll along the Douro River, watching the boats bob in the water.

That’s a wrap for our visit to Porto! We hope you guys enjoyed following along and that you got a few ideas for your own trip. If you have any other suggestions of fun things to do in and around Porto, feel free to share those with travellers in the comments below.

This is part of our Travel in Portugal video series showcasing Portuguese food, Portuguese culture and Portuguese cuisine.

LAGOS, PORTUGAL | 6 BEST Things To Do In Lagos

Lagos is a charming port town that boasts dramatic natural scenery, situated in southern Portugal's Algarve region. We highlight the 6 best things to do in and around Lagos in this video:

6. Hit The Beach
Due to its year-round pleasant weather, one of the best things to do in Lagos is to hit the beach. Characterized by flanking rocky cliffs, hidden coves, and white sand, Lagos is home to many beaches that are perfect to relax and swim. Our favorite beaches for swimming include the sandy Duna Beach, the beautiful Dona Ana, Estudantes, Batata, and Camilo beach.

5. Explore Downtown Lagos
The downtown of Lagos is home to whitewashed houses and narrow cobbled streets, filled with cozy restaurants and cafés. It’s just fun to wander around, have a bite or drink, and relax. But if you want to learn a bit more about Lagos’ past, you can also visit the forte da ponte da bandeira, the iconic churches (Santo Antonio/Santa Maria Church), or one of the museums (Museu de Lagos dr. josé formosinho). It’s also a pleasure to roam around the traditional houses and check out the pretty harbour.

4. Walk The Cliffs
Starting at Pinhao beach, you can walk 3km of coastal cliffs all the way to the famous Ponta da Piedade. Winding above eccentric limestone formations and through diverse flora and fauna, this trail is truly special. Adventure lovers will find joy in getting lost and then navigating their way back to the path throughout the route. Even though the trail is not well-marked, you can just keep walking south the whole time along the cliffs and you’ll make it to Ponta da Piedade.

3. Ponta da piedade
Sitting 3.5 kilometers from the city center of Lagos, Ponta da Piedade is one of the most amazing natural sites to see in the area. Jagged limestone cliffs and hidden caves take center stage while pounding waves make beautiful music in the background. There is a boardwalk as well as small cliff trails that line the edges, winding around the magnificent lighthouse. We recommend arriving at the point an hour or so before sunset. In this way, you can get a little exercise in before rewarding yourself with one of the most beautiful sunset spots in all of Portugal!

2. Grutas boat tour or kayak tour
There are hundreds of caves and strange rock formations that go along the coast from Batata Beach to Ponta da piedade. While it’s fun to walk along the top of the cliffs, it’s even more impressive to see them from the ocean level. You have a few options for guided tours of these special cliffs. You can either go on a guided kayak or boat tour that leaves from downtown Lagos. While the kayak is more adventurous, it can also be a little rough because of weather conditions!

☑️ Book kayak tour:

☑️ Book boat tour:

1. Day trip to Benagil cave
Located about 35 kilometers from Lagos, The Benagil Cave is an amazing natural attraction in the Algarve. You can get to the cave by rental car or by boat tour directly from Lagos. Keep in mind that if you choose the boat tour, you won’t be able to see the inside of the cave since the boat is too big. That’s why we recommend renting a car or scooter to get to the cave and then renting a kayak at the beach itself.

☑️ Book a guided kayaking tour:

5 Best Places to Visit in Portugal

5 Best Places to Visit in Portugal

For such a small country, Portugal packs a punch. From cosmopolitan cities and out-of-the-way towns and villages, to lively beach resorts and spectacular national parks, this diminutive nation offers an incredibly diverse range of visitor attractions. Occupying a wedge of Iberia and sharing a border with Spain and a fantastic coastline with the Atlantic Ocean, Portugal's location in this sun-kissed corner of Western Europe lends it a singular appeal. Its southern reaches remain a compelling vacation destination, renowned for gloriously sandy beaches and world-class golf courses. The country's interior, meanwhile, offers a wealth of contrast: rolling plains; broad rivers; deep, verdant valleys; and remote mountain ranges.

🇵🇹 Portugal Beaches are the BEST! (+ Ponte De Lima: the oldest town in Portugal) 🏚️

Hello folks and welcome back to another episode of our Portuguese road trip. In this one we leave the beautiful city of Porto and firstly head to Braga, Portugal's third largest city, and is home to the oldest Cathedral in Portugal....which we visit of course.

After a little mooch around and a bite to eat we head on to another cute little town called Ponte De Lima, which is known to be the oldest town in Portugal! Again, another little historical town with another historical monument. This time it came in the form of a Roman bridge, built in 1AD. This place is as cute as towns can get, with plenty of character and outstanding landscapes in the distance 🤩
It was also market day while we were there, which doubled the size of the town! It was huge for such a small town. We had a little nibble and a cheeky drink here before moving on to the most northernly point on the Portuguese coastline for sunset! 🌅

Punta De Cabadelo is as far north as you can get on the coastline before you hit the Spanish border. Both countries are separated by the river Minho. In theory, if you're a good swimmer you could probably swim across to Spain but it would also land you in a spot of bother with the border control Police. But seriously, this place is stunning! The beach here is called Praia Do Camarido and is a vast stretch of beach with amazing views looking over to the Spanish mountains ⛰️
As the sun drops behind the ocean you also get a lovely silhouette of the Forte Da Insua, an old fort which looks a very interesting place if you Google it. There isn't a great deal of information on the internet about it, which gives it that extra bit of mystery. All I know is, it looked amazing from the beach at sunset! 😍

So please, come and join us. If you'd like to catch up with this road trip and start from the beginning then please head on over to the playlist below 👇🏽

Until the next one, take care and have fun folks. Peace ✌🏽💚😎
