It is situated approximately 10 km away from the Maduru Oya dam. Caution should be taken when bathing in this lake as it is very common for elephants to appear especially in the evening.

Aralaganwila area of the Polonnaruwa District in the North Central Province of Sri Lanka is home to the well-known tourist destination Piburuttewa Wewa. The distance between it and the city of Polonnaruwa is around 32.4 kilometres, and the travel duration is roughly 30 minutes.
Another lovely location to visit in the Polonnaruwa district is Pimburaththewa Lake. The Aralaganwila region's agriculture depends on the water from this reservoir. Elephants are common in the area, and they frequent the reservoir for water. Because of this, caution should be used when bathing in this reservoir. The rainy season is when this location is at its most picturesque. However, you should use caution when taking a bath. fantastic for enjoying the sunset.

Polonnaruwa is an ancient city in Sri Lanka and a part of the Cultural Triangle. It was the capital of Sri Lanka for nearly 2 centuries between the 11th and 13th centuries. During its capital period, Polonnaruwa was ruled by kings 1st Vijayabahu , Parakramabahu the Great and Nishanka Malla. All three rulers were committed to agriculture, religion and social development. The glory of medieval Sri Lanka is seen at Polonnaruwa, an ancient and compact city featuring 12th-century stone sculptures and the Gal Vihara – comprising three enormous Buddha figures. One of the statues is reclining and is 13 metres in length, one standing and the other is sitting. The statues, located in a cluster along a dirt road, are revered as being among the most sacred monuments in all of Sri Lanka. There are also palace ruins, great bas-reliefs and friezes to see.

After an amazing day of hiking Sigiriya & Pidurangala, we are spending the day in Polonnaruwa. This UNESCO World Heritage site is the second ancient capital of Sri Lanka, after Anuradhapura, and houses many well-preserved ruins and Buddha statues. Home to many former Sinhalese kings and once the resting place of the holy tooth relic of Buddha. You will be wandering through ancient palaces, picturesque shrines, and impressive temples dating back to the 11th century AD.
Before planning our trip to Sri Lanka, we had never heard of Polonnaruwa and after visiting Anuradhapura we were wondering what to expect from yet another ancient city.
After this day we can only say WOW! This hidden gem really impressed us with its beauty and is absolutely worth visiting. The ruins are better preserved & many statues are in very good condition, compared to Anuradhapura, making it easier to get a glimpse of Sinhalese history. It offers an impressive collection of sights such as the Lankatilaka temple and the sacred Quadrangle. #srilanka #polonnaruwa #travelvlog #ancient #buddhism #cultural

Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka (with subtitles)
Polonnaruwa (Sinhalese – පොළොන්නරුව Tamil – பொலநறுவை was the country’s capital from the 11th– 13th Century. Polonnaruwa Sri Lanka is considered one of the best preserved historic cities in the world. Located approximately 140km from Kandy, Polonnaruwa was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, due to its abundance of historic remains.
Most commonly referred to as Sri Lanka’s second ancient capital, the city of Polonnaruwa is nevertheless a magnificently preserved city with rich archaeological monuments and natural beauty. Located in Sri Lanka’s North Central Province, Polonnaruwa has both its ancient city, an adjoining “old town” as well as a “new town” located about 6km away. The archaeological sites are in a compact layout, within easy distance of each other, and tours are easily arranged either on foot or more popularly explored on bicycle.
As in Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa too has its share of Buddhist sites, and tour buses of pilgrims can be often seen visiting the stupas and monasteries. But Polonnaruwa also boasts an impressive array of ruined palaces and courtyards, pleasure gardens and intricate networks of bathing tanks, as well as carvings and sculptures and a rich display of artistry. The ancient city was declared a World heritage Site by UNESCO in 1982.
