Most Beautiful Places in Montenegro - PIVA LAKE, Pluzine
Protected nature park with stunning Piva canyon where 45 kilometers (around 28 mi) long artificial Piva Lake is tucked, winding road with 56 hand-made tunnels, a 220 meters (721 feet) high dam “Mratinje” are only few things here that will leave you breathless!
Piva Lake was formed after Piva River was dammed in 1979, making it the most elevated artificial water reservoir in the world (675m – 2214 feet).
Its turquoise color changes with light and the weather, perfectly matching the surrounding mountains.
Piva is among best places to visit in Montenegro, ideal for relaxing holiday away from the crowds, and besides enjoying its magnificent views, you can do many outdoor activities like boat cruising, fishing, zip-lining, and hiking.
Recommended places to stay and base up here are beautiful ethno village Izlazak, or the new town of Pluzine, as the old one was submerged when the lake was formed and now it’s laying under the water.
Similar thing would have happened to the Piva Monastery, but knowing the cultural and religious value of it, government of Yugoslavia decided to relocate the monastery before the dam was finished, rock by rock and save it from destruction. Now, if you visit this sacred place, you may see the numbers written on individual stones so it could be put back together in the original form. Impressive.
To get to Pluzine and Piva, you can use public transportation, but managing around is possible with a taxi or a car, since this here is rural area of Montenegro. For a daily tip to Piva Lake and drive through the canyon, we recommend joining our Tara rafting Tour where, besides rafting, we have a good insight of this region and its intact beauty.

Hallo liebe Roadtrip-Freunde, hier ist der 3. Teil aus der Reihe unserer diesjährigen Balkan-Tour.
In diesem Video: Wir sind in Montenegro. Abfahrt früh morgens in Pluzine, gelegen am Piva-Stausee. Es geht die schmale (aber auch mit dem Wohnmobil gut befahrbare) Serpentinenstraße vom See weit hoch bis nach Trsa. Unterwegs bieten sich noch herrliche Ausblicke auf den Stausee an. Kurz vor Trsa ist es, als kommt man in eine andere Welt. Es öffnet sich eine weite, grünlich-gelbe hügelige Berglandschaft mit einigen schrofferen Bergen im Hintergrund. Das alles getaucht in frühmorgendliches Licht. Ein Genuss. Hier bleiben wir eine Weile, frühstücken und machen einen Rundgang durch den kleinen Ort und bis zur kleinen Kirche, die etwas außerhalb gelegen ist. Ein herrliches Fleckchen Erde. Ganz sicher ein Highlight!
Wir fahren die Straße P14 weiter, einmal durch den Nationalpark Durmitor. Unterwegs gibt es eigentlich ständig tolle Aussichten. Die Straße führt weiter durch hügeliges Grasland, eine Hochebene, die sich bis hoch zum Sedlo-Pass auf gut 1900 Metern Höhe zieht. Von da an geht es stetig bergab, bis man nach Zabljak kommt. Hier wollen wir unser nächtliches Quartier beziehen. Es ist aber noch recht früh, also fahren wir noch etwas weiter bis zur Tara-Schlucht. Hier an der berühmten Brücke über die Schlucht herrscht ein guter Betrieb, die Brücke ist voller Fußgänger. Da wir mit dem Wohnmobil keinen Parkplatz bekommen, fahren wir noch kurz runter zum Fluss und dann wieder zurück nach Zabljak. Nachdem wir uns dort eingerichtet haben, machten wir noch eine kleine Wanderung zum Schwarzen See, der hier in der Gegend ein beliebtes Ausflugsziel ist.
