Wonder of Sri Lanka - 4........
Built during the Kotte era, this Ambalam was used by visitors to the city of Kotte and the Kotte Raja Maha Vihara to relieve fatigue and stay. Located at Pitakotte Junction, this Ambalam is 20 feet long and 15 feet wide. The roof here rests on 10 uncarved stone pillars.
Later, when the road was widened, this embankment was moved back a little and reinstalled.

කොට්ටේ යුගයේ දී ඉදිකර ඇති මෙම අම්බලම කෝට්ටේ නගරයට හා කෝට්ටේ රජ මහා විහාරයට පැමිණෙන්නන් විසින් වෙහෙස මහන්සිය සංසිදුවා ගැනීමටත් නවාතැන් ගැනීමටත් යොදා ගත් ස්ථානය විය.කෝට්ටේ පාර පිටකෝට්ටේ මංසන්දියේ පිහිටා ඇති මෙම අම්බලම දිගින් අඩි 20 ක් හා පළලින් අඩි 15 ක් වේ. මෙහි වහළ කැටයම් නොකරන ලද ගල් කණු 10 ක් මත රඳා පවතී.
පසු කලෙක මාර්ගය පුළුල් කරන අවස්ථාවකදී මෙම අම්බලම තිබූ ස්ථානයෙන් මදක් පසුපසට ගෙන නැවත ස්ථාපනය කර ඇත.

The Kotte Kingdom, also known as the Kingdom of Kotte, was a medieval Sinhalese kingdom established in the 15th century on the island of Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka). Here's a brief overview:
Founding: The Kingdom of Kotte emerged as a separate entity during the 15th century from the weakening Kingdom of Gampola. Alagakkonara, a powerful military leader, is said to have been instrumental in founding the city of Kotte.

Rise to Power: The Alagakkonara family rose to prominence during a period of political fragmentation in Sri Lanka. They became influential ministers and officials in the Sinhalese kingdoms, especially during the decline of the Kingdom of #Gampola.
Conflict with Ming #China: One of the significant events during the reign of the Alagakkonara was the conflict with the envoys of the #Ming_Dynasty of China. Admiral #Zheng He's fleet visited the island during their famous treasure #voyages. There was a disagreement or conflict, which led to the brief capture of the Alakeshvara (a title referring to a leader of the Alagakkonara clan) and his family, who were taken to China. However, they were later released and sent back to Sri Lanka.
Legacy: The Alagakkonara family's influence laid the foundation for the rise of the Kingdom of Kotte, which would later become a major power in the region. The fortified city of Kotte, their most enduring legacy, would go on to serve as the capital for the Kotte Kingdom and its successors.
Golden Era: The kingdom reached its zenith during the reign of King #Parakramabahu VI (1412-1467). He was able to bring almost the entire island under the Kotte rule, except for the Kingdom of Jaffna in the far north.
Decline: After the death of Parakramabahu VI, the kingdom began to fragment due to internal strife. It split into three smaller kingdoms: #Sitawaka, #Rayigama, and Kotte.
#Portuguese Influence: By the early 16th century, the Portuguese had arrived in Sri Lanka. Their influence grew rapidly in the region, and they started to intervene in the affairs of the local kingdoms.
Religion: #Buddhism was the main religion in Kotte, as with other Sinhalese kingdoms. The kingdom was a significant patron of Buddhist arts, literature, and temples.
The Kotte period is #crucial in Sri Lankan history as it set the stage for the coming centuries of #European influence and colonial rule, starting with the Portuguese, followed by the #Dutch, and then the #British.

Tunnels are an important feature of a fortification which serves as an escape for the occupants under a siege and also to attack the enemy by surprise. According to ancient chronicles, Mihintale is the place where the Indian Emperor Ashoka's son, Mahinda, introduced Buddhism to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE. The encounter between Mahinda and the Sri Lankan King Devanampiya Tissa is said to have taken place on the Mihintale mountain, marking the beginning of Buddhism's influence in the country. Mihintale is renowned for its religious and archaeological significance. The site features a variety of ancient structures and monuments that attract both local devotees and tourists. Among the prominent attractions are the Maha Seya (Great Stupa), which is a large hemispherical dome-shaped structure that houses relics of the Buddha.
