City of Piacenza in Northern Italy
Piacenza is a city in the Emilia-Romagna region of northern Italy. It is the capital of the province of Piacenza. Piacenza boasts a great number of historical palaces, often characterized by splendid gardens. Palazzo Comunale, also known as il Gotico, was built in 1281 as the town hall. It is a prototypic Broletto of Lombardy. Of the original design, only the northern side was completed, with its typical Guelph merlons, the arcaded frame, the central bell tower with two lesser ones at the sides. Piazza Cavalli is the main square of the town. It is named (Cavalli means horses) for the two bronze equestrian monuments of Alexander Farnese, Duke of Parma, nephew and valiant general of Philip II of Spain) and his son Ranuccio I Farnese, Duke of Parma, who succeeded him. The statues are masterpieces of Francesco Mochi, a Mannerist sculptor.

Places to see in ( Piacenza - Italy )
Piacenza is a city in Italy’s Emilia Romagna region. In its central Piazza Cavalli are 2 equestrian statues and the medieval Gothic Palace. A copper angel rotates atop the bell tower of Piacenza Cathedral. The nearby Sant’Antonino Basilica has an 8-sided tower and 17th-century frescoes, plus a portal known as Heaven’s Gate, with a rose window. The Farnese Palazzo Civic Museums house sculptures and weapons.
Located in the centre of the Padana Valley, Piacenza is on the right bank of the river Po, only 67 Km from Milan. Along the final part of the ancient Via Emilia, the town is located in the Northernmost and Westernmost part of the Emilia region. This quiet, provincial town, easy to live in and dedicated to the pleasures of good food, is also characterised by small treasures, and memories of a historically rich past, like its Cathedral, ‘Palazzo Gotico’, ‘Palazzo Farnese’. Not to mention the wonderful noble mansions, its several churches and the narrow streets of the centre, which, though appearing severe, hide unexpected surprises. Any season is good to go to Piacenza. However, we recommend spring and autumn, when the mild climate makes walking along its streets more pleasant.
Undoubtedly, besides the two squares, ‘Piazza Duomo’ and ‘Piazza Cavalli’, the latter being the emblem of the city with the two equestrian statues by Mochi on the background of ‘Palazzo Gotico’, further sites are worth visiting : the Romanesque ‘Sant’Antonino ’ Basilica, one of the pilgrims’ stations along the Via Francigena, with its ‘Porta del Paradiso’ (Heaven’s Gate), ‘ Santa Maria di Campagna’ church which preserves, among others, frescoes by Pordenone and San Savino Basilica with the 12th century mosaics representing the cycle of the months.
Among the many places to visit in the streets of the city centre, San Sisto church, hidden from sight on purpose, is rich in frescoes, wrought iron works and 18th century decorations, while the Municipal Theatre, dedicated to Verdi and built by Lotario Tomba is like a miniature ‘Teatro alla Scala’.
Another remarkable place to visit is the beautiful ‘Palazzo Farnese’, built by Vignola, where Palazzo Farnese Municipal Museums are located; here it is possible to admire the Etruscan liver, Botticelli’s Tondo, while Alberoni Art Gallery displays the famous ‘Ecce Homo’ by Antonello da Messina.
You can’t leave Piacenza without visiting Ricci Oddi Modern Art Gallery, which offers a complete view of Italian figurative art starting from the second half of the 19th century. Besides the rich Opera and Drama season at Piacenza’s Municipal Theatre, Festival del Diritto (Law Festival) , held in September, has become a nationally important event.

Places to see in ( Piacenza - Italy ) Piazza Cavalli
Piazza Cavalli in Piacenza takes its name from the Equestrian Monuments to the Farnese family by Francesco Mochi. The historic and political barycentre of the city is the spectacular Piazza dei Cavalli, so called for the two splendid equestrian monuments that embellish it.
Once called Piazza Grande, it was opened in the eighties of the thirteenth century in conjunction with the construction of the Gothic Palace, similar to the prospectus Church of San Francesco.
It is located in a central position with respect to the main medieval road axes along which the families of the merchant aristocracy had established their residences and established the main economic activities. Over the centuries the layout of the square has been modified following the construction of the seventeenth-century Collegio dei Mercanti and the neoclassical Palazzo del Governatore .

Places to see in ( Piacenza - Italy ) Palazzo Farnese
Palazzo Farnese is a palace in Piacenza, northern Italy. This large partly constructed palace is located on the banks of the River Po in the city of Piacenza in Northern Italy. In 1556, Ottavio Farnese, Duke of Castro and of Parma, also became Duke of Piacenza and initially set up his court there. Ottavio decided on a residence in the city possibly because he could feel more secure due to the presence of a Spanish garrison.
The palace was commissioned by Ottavio's wife, Margaret of Austria, daughter of Emperor Charles V. The new edifice was erected over a former fortress built by the Visconti in 1352, part of which can still be seen. An initial design was made by Francesco Paciotto, from Urbino, and in 1558, the architect Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, better known as Vignola, was brought in to revise the designs. Vignola had already been commissioned to design the Villa Farnese at Caprarola (Latium) for Cardinal Alessandro Farnese, the older brother of the Duke.
Vignola had to take Piacotto's design into account but significantly revised the design which was presented to the patrons in 1561. The drawings are for a vast palace on a scale paralleled only by the Vatican Palace in Italy; the rectangular plan is circa 111 metres by 88 metres.[1] The building works were entrusted to Giovanni Bernardo Della Valle, Giovanni Lavezzari and Bernardo Panizzari (Caramosino). The actual construction, however, made up only less than a half of Vignola's original project and lacked many of the planned architectural features; missing elements include part of the exterior surrounding walls, the main façade modelled on the ancient triumphal arch and with a large tower, and a theater in the large inner courtyard. The expenditure of such a large palace plus the political machinations of the Piacentine nobility may have caused Ottavio not to complete the building and instead move his court from Piacenza to Parma. The construction of this partly built palace was completed in 1602, under Duke Ranuccio I.
After the death of the last Farnese duke in 1731, the palace fell into disrepair. Restoration began only in the early 20th century and today the Palazzo Farnese at Piacenza houses an important series of museums and exhibitions. The Ducal Chapel (Cappella Ducale or Cappella Grande) was used by the family for its religious rites. It is a hall on a square plan, turned into an octagon by the introduction of four apses at the corners. The sides have the same length as the chapel's height up to the hemispherical dome. The chapel is decorated with lilies from the Farnese coat of arms and Mannerist masks portraying angels. Other symbols referring to the Ducal family such as the unicorn, starfish, dolphins and turtles, appear in the large frieze.
