A Look Through Old Town (Vielle Ville) of Aix-En-Provence, France

Aix's Old Town is perfectly poised to seduce the visitor with its winding streets, craft shops, boutiques, restaurants, elegant squares, refreshing fountains, markets - and all steeped in centuries, if not millennia, of history.

The Old Town or Vieille Ville fans out from the Cours Mirabeau, on the opposite side of the boulevard from the Mazarin Quarter. And it presents a sharp contrast to the latter's neat grid-pattern layout, sedate atmosphere and homogenous architectural style.

In the Old Town's maze of narrow alleys and hidden squares, all is hustle and bustle and a real mix of periods. Aix reached its height of glory under the leadership of Good King René (1409-1480). But old is a catch-all term spanning everything from Roman times to the 19th century.

You can get a free fold-out map from the Aix en Provence Tourist Office with brief notes on the most important buildings, but probably the most enjoyable way to experience this part of the city is simply to wander where the mood takes you.

It's also an excellent opportunity to browse Aix's numerous colourful daily markets at various squares dotted around the Old Town (details below) and shop for everything from salt cod to rare antiquarian books.

La Rotonde, at the bottom of the Cours Mirabeau, is a good place to start. From here, the first main sight you come across as you thread your way up through the back-streets is the place d'Albertas, a baroque/rococo square dating back to the mid 18th century with a superb fountain in the middle.

Often glamorously photographed, as in the picture, the square is, in reality, more dilapidated than it looks in the glossy tourist literature - but all the more full of character for it.

Just up the road, the large area known as the trois places (three squares - Verdun, Prêcheurs and Madeleine) has been the focus of an enormous - and very disruptive - three year long renovation project.

During this time various essential utility services were repaired and the entire space was redesgined and landscaped. Watch out for the glass tiles set in the pavement. Through them you can view the vestiges of mediaeval Aix uncovered by archeologists during the works. The project was finally completed in May 2019.

Among the historical buidings of interest here are the Palais de Justice (Law Courts), a monumental 19th century neo-classical pile that's France's most important Appeal Court after the one in Paris. Facing it is the Church of La Madeleine, a 13th century Dominican church with a 19th century facade.

Description: The capital of Saxony is a big garden landscape. Few large cities are so close to nature or have such extensive gardens, spacious parks and generous lawns for playing and sunbathing. The most impressive park in the Saxon metropolis is the 363-acre Great Garden or Grosser Garten. Elector Johann Georg III started the Dresdeners' favorite park with its absolutely straight avenues in 1678, modeling it on the French parks. The Palace at the point where the avenues meet is a jewel of early Baroque. It is still used today for festive events in the middle of green surroundings. In the summer, the open-air stages and the puppet theater are always popular. Other attractions include the Botanical Garden and the zoo, while Volkswagen's manufacture of luxury cars in its Transparent Factory on the edge of the park is a symbol of the modern. For the journey into the wide landscape of experience, visitors young and old like to use the park railway, which is traditionally operated by Dresden schoolchildren.

The Park Railway
With steam power through the park

Visitors entering the park Großer Garten (English: Great Garden) are often amazed as unrecognisable sounds and the energetic signal of a locomotive disturbs the idyllic peace and thick clouds of smoke rise up into the crowns of the trees. The solution to this puzzle is the park railway, a miniature railway with 381 mm gauge which takes thousands of small and large passengers on a trip through the park during the summer months. Special about this railway is that it is operated by children and young people in their free time.
Already in the early thirties of the last century a miniature railway ran as a special attraction to the Hygiene and Garden Exhibition on the site of the park Großer Garten. After the city had seen years of railways carrying rubble away from the city following 1945, memories of the old steam railways resurfaced in the city's consciousness International Children's Day in 1950 was the perfect occasion to make the children's railway operating again. In that same year the first stretch went into service. In 1951 it was renamed the Pioneer's railway and was extended to 5.6 km.
From this time onwards, most of the service roles have been carried out by children, many of today's train drivers caught the railway bug in their childhood here. In 1990 the Pioneer's railway was renamed: Dresden Park Railway and in 1993 incorporated into Schlösser und Gärten Dresden. The train takes playgroups and school groups to the zoo, the palace ponds or to events in the open air stage in comfort and at a low price. In the event of inclement weather, covered or closed carriages offer protection.
As well as Father Christmas tours, the annual Open doors day is particularly popular, but romantic night time journeys are also in the calendar. The stretch passes through a charming area of the Great Garden. There are lots of things to discover on the way: The animal enclosures in the zoo, the impressive palace and lake Carola, where passengers can take a gondola ride. It is not only children who will be enchanted on the half hour round journey - adults can sit back and relax and enjoy reminiscing on their own childhood, as the small train hurries through the park at 20 km/h (12 mph).
