Petroșani is a city in Hunedoara County, Transylvania, Romania. The city has been associated with mining since the 19th century.
The town became part of Romania in 1920 as a consequence of the Treaty of Trianon.
The population experienced massive growth only in the 20th century during the communist regime, as many workers were brought in from other parts of the country.
As other cities from the Jiu Valley, throughout the second half of the 19th century and most of the 20th century, most activities in the city revolved around the mines. But after the fall of the communist regime, many mines were closed, and the city, just like the whole valley, was forced to diversify the economy. This has also led to a significant population decline: Petroșani is one of the Romanian cities which has experienced the fastest population loss from the 1990s onwards.

We begin this video right on the southern borders of Transylvania, searching through the woods of Cozia National Park for the stunning waterfall known as Cascada Lotrișor.
After this, we headed north, spending a couple of days in the beautiful city of Sibiu, which is also known as 'the heart of Transylvania', before continuing north to one of our favourite locations we have seen in Romania... Cheile Turzii. The scale of this gorge is so impressive and the walk is incredibly fun!
We finish the video with one of the mist iconic and unique attractions in all Romania... Salina Turda (also known as Turda Salt Mine). This place is so unique and you'll have your jaw on the floor the entire way round.

PESTERA BOLII ROMANIA
La mai puțin de șase kilometri de Petroșani, pe vechiul drum ce lega Orientul de Occident se află Peștera Bolii. Istoricii afirmă că a fost locuită în perioada neoliticului și apoi în epoca bronzului.
În pas cu istoria ea devine loc de refugiu pentru comercianți, armate, haiduci, inclusiv pentru partizanii care se opuneau regimului comunist. Cert este că Peștera Bolii este amintită oficial în cronicile de la Viena la începutul anilor 1400.
Peștera Bolii este o străpungere naturală, iar cei 466 metri sunt accesibili în totalitate. Portalul de intrare este spectaculos cu o lățime de 20 metri la intrare și o înălțime de 10. Apoi, peștera dezvoltă galerii impresionante. Datorită acusticii, sala principală a fost folosită încă din perioada interbelică pentru concerte. Din 2006, activitățile artistice au fost reluate.
În 1960 au fost construite poduri peste pârâul din interior, însă ele au fost distruse în timp. Pentru o perioadă, peștera a fost abandonată, pentru ca apoi speologi si voluntari să lucreze la reamenajarea ei pentru a o reda circuitului turistic.
La nici doi kilometri de Peștera Bolii, pe drumul ce leagă Hațegul de municipiul Petroșani se află desprins dintr-o altă lume. Este vorba de canionul carstic de la Bănița, un loc puțin promovat, însă de o frumusețe rară.
Accesul către cheile Băniței, acolo unde se află canionul se face de pe drumul european E79. Pe o lungime de 200 metri, pârâul Jupâneasa a sculptat în calcar milioane de ani, pentru ca astăzi turiștii să se poată bucura de o priveliște încântătoare. Vara este anotimpul cel mai potrivit pentru vizitarea acestui canion.
Localizare
Peștera este situată în partea de nord orașului Petroșani, la 6km de acesta, pe drumul ce leagă Valea Jiului de Țara Hațegului, în locul unde se întâlnesc Munții Retezatului cu cei ai Sebeșului.
Descriere
Peștera începe acolo unde Pârâul Jupâneasa se pierde în pachetul de calcarele jurasice printr-un portal spectaculos de 20 m la baza și 10 m înălțime. Galeria principală a peșterii este în general de mari dimensiuni, pe alocuri lărgindu-se în adevărate săli spațioase. Formațiuni de scurgere apar în locurile înalte și pe tavanul galeriei. Pe o lungime de 466 m galeria coboară doar 3 m. La ieșire din peștera pârâul poartă numele de Galbina.
Condiții de vizitare
Prin anii ´60 peștera a fost amenajată cu poduri de trecere peste pârâu dar ele au fost distruse în timp. Peștera a fost abandonată până de curând când speologii locali de la Asociația PETRO-AQUA, au trecut la reamenajare. Au fost montate podețe care ușurează parcurgerea întregului gol subteran fără pericol.

Manifestări artistice
Încă din perioada interbelică în cea mai mare sală a peșterii au fost organizate concerte muzicale. Sala a fost denumită Sala de concert și dans ca urmare a acusticii deosebite de care a dat dovadă. În anul 2007 în ziua de 1 mai tot în spiritul tradiției s-au desfășurat manifestări artistice atât în interiorul peșterii cât și în afara ei.

Hunedoara includes the most important Gothic-style castle in Transylvania. Castle Corvin also known as the Hunyad Castle was destroyed by fire five times, but it was rebuilt numerous times by Austro-Hungarian and later Romanian authorities. Aside from the castle, the town grew as an iron production center and a market for the nearby mountain regions. The city had the largest steel works in Romania, but activity gradually declined after the fall of the Iron Curtain due to market losses. This was a setback to the town's overall prosperity, which is now being restored through new investments.
