How Would I Improve Metrolink?
Metrolink is Southern California's regional rail system that was established in 1992 to replace aging car related infrastructure that was crippling the economic vitality of the state along with dampening the human spirit with endless concrete highways leading to lung pollution even after leaded gasoline was banned. Armed with a fleet of 12 EMD F40-PH locomotives and a handful of gallery cars, the new Metralink set out to be the standard for rail travel worldwide. Three decades later, the story continues and the future is looking great!

This Man’s Village Butter Idli & Chutney Put PANDAVAPURA On The Map! SHIVAPPA IDLI Home, Darsaguppe
#benneidli #idlichutney #karnataka
shivappa benne idli, darsaguppe, near srirangapatna, village food, pandavapura, pandavapura idli, popular idli stop off mysore, mysuru, highway, village tradition, butter idli, chutney, putani chutney, mandya district, bangalore mysore highway, melukote, shivappa idli hotel, shivappa idli, hotel shivappa idli
Pandavapura, located on the state highway between Srirangapatna and Melukote in Mandya district of Karnataka, would perhaps not have registered as a breakfast stop on the traveller’s map, but for an idli shop that goes back over three decades. Actually, it isn’t even a shop, but a window in 60-something-year-old Shivappa’s home from where he dispenses freshly steamed idlis (only) with home churned butter for a few hours each morning. Travellers on the route, and even those who journey from afar just to eat here, line up outside the window, even before it is flung open at 7am.
Shivappa’s enterprise bears no signboard and he employs no one, preferring to do everything himself, from preparing the chutney and the butter to the soaking and grinding of the grain, the fermentation and steaming of the idlis, helped only by his wife. When you are here, you need to abide by his “seemingly authoritarian” rules - register your order, collect a token in exchange for your payment, and wait patiently for Shivappa to steam the idlis fresh and call your token number! This may seem like a bit of a drill, until you take a bite of the spicy chutney soaked idlis, and then it all seems to make sense. Like we discovered when we drove 130 kilometres from Bengaluru for breakfast recently. Hope you enjoy this episode; take care, stay safe and happy eating.
Idli Chutney Butter
Rs. 30/ 40/ 60 (usd 0.1) for 4/ 6/ 8 idlis respectively.

The Waverley Cemetery, The self funded and iconic graveyard in Sydney
The Waverley Cemetery, The self funded and iconic graveyard in Sydney
The Waverley Cemetery is located on top of the cliffs at Bronte in the eastern suburbs of Sydney. The first interment occurred on 4 August 1877 and noted for its largely intact Victorian and Edwardian monuments. The size of 41 acres bounded by Trafalgar, Boundary and St Thomas streets. The cemetery is self-funded, deriving its income from interments – including burial, cremation, memorials and mausolea – of which there has been over 86,000. It contains the graves of many significant Australians including the poet Henry Lawson, Jules Archibald, founder of The Bulletin and benefactor of the Archibald Prize, nineteenth century poet Henry Kendall, the American actor William E. Sheridan, poet and author Dorothea Mackellar and author Ethel Pedley.
More than 137 years of operation remains a 100% self funded and with inspiration drawn from the reform movements occurring in London and Paris. It has never been funded by the public purse or council ratepayers, with individual graves maintained for a fee. The cemetery was a location in filming of the movie The Pyjama Girl Case in 1977, Spyforce in 1972, and in 1979 the cemetery was a location in filming of the movie Tim starring Mel Gibson. The cemetery has also been used for TV shows such as an Australian long-length episode of Baywatch and the Australian television series Home and Away. It was also used for filming of the movies Dirty Deeds and Bollywood Blockbuster Dil Chahta Hai.
This is one of Ken Unsworth's 'skeleton cyclist on a pole' variations for Sculptures by the Sea, titled 'there's many a slip 'twixt the cup and the lip'. In daylight, the skeleton is white and the stash is in a big red bag. The background is Bronte Park and left (and out) of picture is Waverley cemetery.

**NOTE: I have recently discovered that the 1926 date is incorrect. While US 60 was pushed into LA then, it had no actual routing. This was completed in the late 1920's (approx. 1929).**
Wrapping up SR 60, (57 to 15 coming soon!) we exit off I-15 to join the historic State Route 60! While the modern freeway west of the I-15 has nothing to do with US 60, the remainder does. This video also features guide signs to let you know when US 60's historic routes exit and join the freeway alignment. Note that US 60 didn't travel the full length as a freeway, instead as an expressway or side street. The freeway was built over the old road beds however, and thus counts towards the years US 60 traversed these alignments.
The Riverside Interchange is one of the most historically interesting interchanges in California, in my opinion, as all roads that originally met there were US highways, and of those, two roads retain their original route number (60 and 91) but reincarnated as State Routes. I-215 is the modern successor to US 395, old I-15, and later I-15E, CA-91 is the successor to US 91, and CA-60 is obviously the successor to US 60. Following in the footsteps of their grandparents, I-215 and CS-60 co-route (or carpool if you will) from Downtown Riverside through Box Springs Canyon, to split at the northwestern edge of Moreno Valley. CA-60 then continues on a rather straight path on the northern edge of Moreno Valley until it reaches the Bandlands area. Here, Caltrans considers it a freeway however it's more of a divided expressway. The road ends at the Beaumont Interchange, where US 60 rejoined US 70 and 99 before heading towards Indio and 'other desert cities' to quote Caltrans, referring to Phoenix.

Railfanning Riverside - La Sierra - 1/17/16
After a couple of months of work out of town, I was finally able to go back home and have some free time. After being off from railfanning for so long, I decided to go railfan at one of the stations I've been striving to return to, which happened to be the Metrolink Riverside - La Sierra Station. Ever since I moved to the Palm Springs area back in the late 90's, I've seen this station many times every time I drove to Orange County, but I never saw any trains there, that is until today. Although it was a very chilly morning and the fact that I had to get up at 3am, I was able to however make it there around 5:30am before Amtrak 3 came through (Even with the fact that Amtrak 3 was running late today). All in all, this trip turned out better than I expected. The station is well suited for railfanning with a good sight down both ways of the mainline along with crossings in either distance, making approaching trains easily detectable. I even spent some time when I first arrived talking to the friendly security officer at the station.
Train 1 : BNSF Z-CHILAC9-15A with ES44C4 #8250, C44-9W #5088, ES44DC #7779, & ES44C4 #7028. Early in the morning and with just a glimpse of sunlight in the horizon, this intermodal heads west just a couple minutes after I arrived. Friendly engineer as well !
Train 2 : Amtrak 3 (Southwest Chief) with P42DC #47 & #124. First time seeing the new baggage cars and it also appears that the consist was much smaller for today.
Train 3 : BNSF S-LACHOU2-17A with ES44C4 #6737, C44-9W #5199, ES44C4 #8051, & GE Evolution Series Tier 4 #2038.
Train 4 : BNSF Q-STLLAC4-15A with ES44C4 #8260, C44-9W #5491, ES44C4 #6608(DPU), & ES44DC #7207(DPU). Just as S-LACHOU2-17A passes, out in the distance, Q-STLLAC4-15A appears around the curve making for a nice meet.
Train 5 : Metrolink #751 with CabCar #660 & F59PHI #884.
Train 6 : Metrolink #857 with CabCar #689 & F59PH #864. As soon as Metrolink #857 departs, Q-LACALT5-17A is seen approaching in the opposite direction towards the east.
Train 7 : BNSF Q-LACALT5-17A with ES44C4 #6701, ES44DC #7334, & C44-9W #5285(DPU). Friendly engineer on #6701 !
Train 8 : BNSF M-BARLAC1-17A with C44-9W #4672, ES44C4 #6967, ES44DC #7475, #7832, ES44C4 #8191(DPU), & #7067(DPU). This train appeared out of the morning fog.
Train 9 : BNSF S-HOULAC1-15A with C44-9W #4088, ES44C4 #8208, #7024, C44-9W #4727(Mid-DPU), ET44C4 #3843(Mid-DPU), & #3964(DPU). First time catching a BNSF with Mid-DPU's as well as the ET44C4's !
Train 10 : Metrolink #753 with CabCar #680 & MP36PH-3C #896. Pretty nice departure shot in my opinion.
Train 11 : Metrolink #859 with F59PHI #877 & CabCar #662.
Train 12 : BNSF Q-STLLAC3-15A with ES44C4 #6736, C44-9W #5078, ET44C4 #3891, & ES44DC #7320.
