Austin, one of the great star cities of Texas, and of America
Visit three distinct neighborhoods, including one with a relic of Old Austin, a 50 year old RV park named Pecan Grove. Stroll though a funky neighborhood where we get a hair cut, shop for vintage cloths, learn about natural fragrance, and enjoy Saturday tacos and a cold beer.
Pecan Grove RV Park is a relic set in a modern setting. A 50 year RV park nestled among pecan tree and near the Colorada River, it is literally located in downtown Austin, and situated in a fascinating neighborhood. So old school, they don’t have a website. You must phone to make a reservation. You will be handed a handwritten paper receipt for your stay!
Heading toward San Antonio, literally on the way out of town, I see the President Johnson Library and Museum. A split second decision to visit turn into a powerful experience through a turbulent time in American history. The LBJ (Lyndon Banes Johnson) Presidential Library blew me away; it was much more powerful for me than President Clinton’s Library.
Spontaneously recording a stranger jump of a bridge was a valuable life lesson for me. I strolled up on this random guy wanting to mount the bridge handrail and dive into the river below. He asked me to record him. My initial reaction was hesitancy and “hell no”. Then I took another second to think through what a powerful learning this could be. Instead of “no”, I just “yes” and he handed my his phone to record his plunge. It was beautiful.
His dive and my capturing it made my day, created a compelling story, and added to my Vanlife thinking which is to get out of my comfort zone everyday. Coincidentally, I ran into him later at the Shady Grove bar and we had some laughs and chats. Turns out he was a professional skateboarder. Fascinating people!

2. Brisket Sandwich: why settle for blah gas station food when you can have fresh cut brisket put into a sandwich for you.
3. The Jerky Bar: more beef jerky than you can shake a Texas stick at.
4. The bakery goods: have a Texas size cinnamon roll or maybe a Kolaches. You can't go wrong.
5. Grab a 44 oz Dr. Pepper for the road... only 79 cents (plus tax).
Oh, and you should know that the signs on the highways in Texas are correct. Buc-ee's does have the cleanest and most bathrooms around.
