The Ilocos Region is the first region located in northwestern Luzon. It is comprised of two major provinces: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. There’s no right answer on which one to visit first, the goal is to visit both! You’ll enjoy Laoag in the north, famously dubbed as the Sunshine City, or to the south in Vigan where you will be taken back to the Spanish colonization era in the Philippines. Whether you want to go on a history or nature trip, Ilocos will leave you craving for more every time you visit.

See and Do
In Ilocos Norte, we have Laoag, the capital of Ilocos Norte. One of the most notable destinations here is the two-story mansion that was the former holiday home of late President Marcos and his family. It is now a museum, where visitors are free to explore and check out almost every nook and cranny of the house. When you’re done, you can head for Paoay and find tranquility by the lake, go to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Paoay Church, or ride a 4x4 and slide down the sand dunes. If you have more time, you can take a visit to the Batac museum and view the memorabilia of the late President Marcos.

In Ilocos Sur, you’ll be delighted to step into the picturesque Vigan, a UNESCO World Heritage site. It feels like time traveling to the past, as the Spanish-era houses have been well-preserved over the years. While walking in the streets, don’t forget to grab delicacies that are unique to the town such as Vigan longganisa and Ilocos empanada.

Where to Stay
Ilocos is a popular tourist spot and therefore has a lot of establishments for visitors. Whether you pick north or south, you’ll be able to see hotel options that will suit your budget and taste.

Ilocos Norte (Ilocano: Amianan nga Ilocos; Probinsia ti Ilocos Norte) is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City, located in the northwest corner of Luzón Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east, and Abra to the southeast, and Ilocos Sur to the southwest. Ilocos Norte faces the West Philippine Sea to the west and the Luzon Strait to the north. Ilocos Norte is noted for being the birthplace of the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.

Ilocos Norte Tourists Spots Laog, Paoay Pagudpud, Lapaz
Ilocos Norte (Ilocano: Amianan nga Ilocos; Probinsia ti Ilocos Norte) is a province of the Philippines located in the Ilocos Region. Its capital is Laoag City, located in the northwest corner of Luzón Island, bordering Cagayan and Apayao to the east, and Abra to the southeast, and Ilocos Sur to the southwest. Ilocos Norte faces the West Philippine Sea to the west and the Luzon Strait to the north.
Ilocos Norte is noted for being the birthplace of the former President Ferdinand E. Marcos.
ong before the arrival of the Spaniards, there already existed an extensive region (consisting of the present provinces of Ilocos Norte, Ilocos Sur, Abra and La Union) renowned for its gold mines. Merchants from Japan and China would often visit the area to trade gold with beads, ceramics and silk. The Austronesian inhabitants of the region called their place samtoy, from sao mi toy, which literally meant our language here

In 1571, when the Spanish conquistadors had Manila more or less under their control, they began looking for new sites to conquer. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi's grandson, Juan de Salcedo, volunteered to lead one of these expeditions. Together with 8 armed boats and 45 men, the 22-year-old voyager headed north. On June 13, 1572, Salcedo and his men landed in present-day Vigan and then proceeded towards Laoag, Currimao and Badoc. As they sailed along the coast, they were surprised to see numerous sheltered coves (looc) where the locals lived in harmony. As a result, they named the region Ylocos and its people Ylocanos.

As the Christianization of the region grew, so did the landscape of the area. Vast tracts of land were utilized for churches and bell towers in line with the Spanish mission of bajo las campanas. In the town plaza, it was not uncommon to see garrisons under the church bells. The colonization process was slowly being carried out.

The Spanish colonization of the region, however, was never completely successful. Owing to the abusive practices of many Augustinian friars, a number of Ilocanos revolted. Noteworthy of these were the Dingras uprising (1589) and Pedro Almasan revolt (San Nicolas, 1660). In 1762, Diego Silang led a series of battles aimed at freeing the Ilocano. When he died from his compatriot's bullet, his widow Gabriela continued his cause. However, she too was captured and hanged.

In 1807, the sugar cane (basi) brewers of Piddig rose up in arms to protest the government's monopoly of the wine industry. In 1898, the church excommunicated Gregorio Aglipay for refusing to cut off ties with the revolutionary forces of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo. Unperturbed, he established the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. Aglipay’s movement.

In an effort to gain more political control and because of the increasing population of the region, a Royal Decree was signed on February 2, 1818 splitting Ilocos into two provinces: Ilocos Norte and Ilocos Sur. Soon thereafter, La Union and Abra likewise became independent provinces.

@jamestravelplus
The process of salt making in Pasuquin, Ilocos Norte is a traditional artisanal practice that has been passed down for generations.
Seawater is collected from the nearby West Philippine Sea. The water is filtered to remove impurities, such as sand or debris then transferred to a large evaporating pan, which is typically made of stainless steel or concrete. The pan is heated using rice hull .
As the seawater evaporates, salt crystals begin to form on the surface of the water then collected using a metal rake and are then transferred to a large bamboo weaved container where they are exposed to heat and sunlight to evaporate any remaining moisture. When completely dry, they are placed in sacks or containers for market distribution.

The entire process of salt making in Pasuquin, Ilocos Sur, takes several days and requires constant monitoring to ensure that the salt crystals are of high quality. Despite the modernization and industrialization of salt production, the traditional method of salt making in Pasuquin remains significant to the local economy and culture
