Beautiful Fortified Medieval Village: Laroque, France
📌Laroque on Google Maps:
😍Tourism Page:
Relevant Tags: #travel #frenchVillage #medival #SouthOfFrance #beautifulVillage #walkingtour #shorts
🚗🚍 How to reach:
Laroque is around 1 hours' drive from Montpellier.
Public Transport: Bus line 608 from Montpellier to Laroque (cost 1.60 Euros).
📚 sources:
The fortified medieval village of Laroque is built on a rocky peak, whose foot borders the Hérault at the exit of the gorges, is a considerable village in the Cévennes (armorial of Languedoc). Its strategic site, opening the door to the Languedoc plain to the Cevennes, allows, in addition, from the top of its tower keep (27 m) the complete circular observation of the entire hinterland by controlling the entrances and exits of the various valleys. That is why it has been a permanent place of life from prehistoric times to the present day, adapting the interest of its situation to each evolution of civilization.
In prehistoric times, the Hérault River, navigable by raft, was the only access route to the hinterland. The man of Cro-Magnon controlled this passage from the cave of laurels in the cliff. As proof of its habitat 15 to 20,000 years ago, 1,500 life objects and 500 tools have been found there. There is still a wall engraving of wounded cattle (Auroch), rare in the region. In the 20,000 inhabitants in France at that time, there were already Laroquois. Later, around 7,000 BC, sheep arriving in the south, in the wild, found by themselves the Draille de la Lusette (from St Gelly to Aubrac), which continued to be borrowed by transhumance, after domestication.
The Gallo-Romansused the top of the rock as an oppidum. The Roman legionaries who cleared the land, lived in the Villa Bancal. We find in the castle foundations of the time. The Visigoths (VIth, VIIIth century) left us several stone remains: columns, altar bases, abacus of middle arch of capital.
The Middle Ages still leave us the main memories of village life. The CASTRUM including the tower keep of the 10th century, the main building of the 12th and 13th century, the castle chapel of Saint-Jean of the 11th century, the stately home, the group of Romanesque houses: the protected ensemble of a high enclosure was the place of life of the lords, knights, servants and workers at the castle; of the first part of the Middle Ages.
In the 14th century, the village having extended to the banks of the Hérault, the ramparts (low enclosure) were built in protection against the brigands (roadmen) appeared during the Black Death and the Hundred Years War. The draille of the Lusette passed in the village, between the two enclosures, rue de la Madeleine current, protected by two doors: one to the east the other in the West, hence the possibility of charging the grant and controlling this obligatory passage. Note that King Saint-Louis tried to demilitarize Laroque by having the keep collapsed; but Pope Gregory IX opposed it (cartulary, bullary of Maguelonne)! Richelieu also demolished a small part of the outer ramparts, hence the rue de la Brèche, to subdue the feudals. The parish church of Sainte-Madeleine was built outside the ramparts in the 12th century and was raised in 1898 due to flooding.
The castle chapel of Saint-Jean was donated by the lords in 1155 to form the parish of Laroque. It has always remained the soul of the village: La Gleysette being protected by the ramparts, parish worship was practiced during troubled times and wars of religion. The causeway forming the body of water feeding the mill of the lord, dates from the Middle Ages. The lordship of Laroque depended on the Barony of Sauve and the County of Toulouse.
Currently it is the vocation of this charming village positioned at best halfway between sea and mountain in a natural environment, beautiful, appreciated by tourists. Already, it has many fun activities: climbing, fame of the cliffs of Thaurac (all levels, all heights), canoeing, canyoning, caving, mountain biking, hiking, fishing, discovery fauna and flora. Marking of trails on the Thaurac with a view of the gorges of the Hérault.
Hiking San Jacinto from the Palm Springs Tram
San Jacinto is one of the most approachable of the 10,000-foot peaks in Southern California. I always enjoy taking the tram up from the desert to do this 12-mile round trip hike, but don't underestimate it as the elevation is still large so you will be feeling its effects. Once you get to the summit though you get to see amazing views all the way down to the desert floor and it is a pretty amazing experience.
