Darwin is the capital city of the Northern Territory, Australia. With a population of 139,902 at the 2021 census, the city contains most of the sparsely populated Northern Territory's residents. It is the smallest, wettest, and most northerly of the Australian capital cities and serves as the Top End's regional centre.

Darwin's proximity to Southeast Asia makes it a key link between Australia and countries such as Indonesia and East Timor. The Stuart Highway begins in Darwin and extends southerly across central Australia through Tennant Creek and Alice Springs, concluding in Port Augusta, South Australia. The city is built upon a low bluff overlooking Darwin Harbour. Darwin's suburbs begin at Lee Point in the north and stretch to Berrimah in the east. The Stuart Highway extends to Darwin's eastern satellite city of Palmerston and its suburbs.

The Darwin region, like much of the Top End, has a tropical climate, with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as the build up leading up to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December and brings with it heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour.

The Larrakia people are the traditional owners of the Darwin area and Aboriginal people are a significant proportion of the population. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin Harbour during its survey of the area. John Clements Wickham named the region Port Darwin in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following devastation caused by a cyclone in 1897, another one in 1937, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.

Beware of THIS in New Zealand!

Did you expect this in New Zealand? When you come to New Zealand, you'll be shocked to see gangs. Gangs in New Zealand are so unafraid of the Police that they ride obnoxiously loud motorcycles so you can hear them a mile away.

They even wear a uniform which includes a gang patch, so you know which gang they're from.

This is how open and obvious organised crime is in New Zealand. And for visitors like my wife, it's shocking.

If you stay away from them, they won't bug ya. But the reality is gangs are known for the drug trade, murder, theft, violence against women, and the list goes on.

There are numerous gangs in New Zealand, of varying criminality, organisation and ethnicity, including outlaw motorcycle gangs, street gangs and ethnically based gangs. A chapter of the Hells Angels motorcycle club was formed in Auckland in 1961, the first Hells Angels chapter outside the US.

Soon after, the Mongrel Mob formed in Hastings and Wellington, developing into a predominantly Māori and Pacific Islander gang and having the largest membership in the country.

Through the 1960s and 1970s, other outlaw motorcycle clubs and ethnically based gangs formed, including another predominantly Māori gang, Black Power (not related to the African-American movement), which grew to rival the Mongrel Mob. from Wikipedia.

Palmerston Sanctuary Lakes Park Exploring Walking Sightseeing Tour 4K Northern Territory Australia

Sanctuary lakes is one of the popular parks of Palmerston for a reason. It is a large area, with a walking path which goes right around the lakes, attracting joggers, cyclists, roller bladers and lots of mums with prams! The playground has a large shade sail which covers almost all of the play equipment. There is something for all ages, with a smaller slide and climbing area, a larger slide and a couple of different climbing nets, a little seesaw, some swings and a flying fox and monkey bars. There is even a sort of basketball hoop to practice shooting skills. There is a toilet located close to the park, and barbecuing facilities with tables and benches. These are shaded by tree only.

There is even a little hill your kids can roll down if they like that sort of thing! Hills are hard to find in Palmerston!

Overall this is a great park for all ages, and if you fancy a little exercise a brisk bike ride or speedy walk around the lake will only take about 10-15 minutes. There are plenty of spots for a picnic, you can even try your luck at fishing. There are ducks and ibis too.

If you do decide to walk around the lake, there are parts of the path which come very close to both the water and the road.

As with all water areas in Darwin BE AWARE that there may be crocodiles in the water! Croc sightings have been reported, and there are signs in place.

Take some sunscreen, mozzie repellant and water.

You will find Sanctuary Lakes playground at: 120 Lakeview Blvd, Gunn NT 0832

Great for all ages
Walking/cycling path
Range of good play equipment
Toilets
Playground and grassed areas well shaded
BBQ's
Fully fenced playground
Lots of parking
Some wildlife (ducks/birds) you can feed
Parts are close to roads and water

AUSTRALIA The Best Of Northern Territory

The Northern Territory (NT; formally the Northern Territory of Australia is an Australian territory in the central and central northern regions of Australia. It shares borders with Western Australia to the west (129th meridian east), South Australia to the south (26th parallel south), and Queensland to the east (138th meridian east). To the north, the territory looks out to the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria, including Western New Guinea and other Indonesian islands. The NT covers 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi), making it the third-largest Australian federal division, and the 11th-largest country subdivision in the world. It is sparsely populated, with a population of only 245,800, fewer than half as many people as Tasmania.

The archaeological history of the Northern Territory begins over 40,000 years ago when Indigenous Australians settled the region. Makassan traders began trading with the indigenous people of the Northern Territory for trepang from at least the 18th century onwards. The coast of the territory was first seen by Europeans in the 17th century. The British were the first Europeans to attempt to settle the coastal regions. After three failed attempts to establish a settlement (1824–28, 1838–49, and 1864–66), success was achieved in 1869 with the establishment of a settlement at Port Darwin. Today the economy is based on tourism, especially Kakadu National Park in the Top End and the Uluṟu-Kata Tjuṯa National Park (Ayers Rock) in central Australia, and mining.

The capital and largest city is Darwin. The population is concentrated in coastal regions and along the Stuart Highway. The other major settlements are (in order of size) Palmerston, Alice Springs, Katherine, Nhulunbuy and Tennant Creek. Residents of the Northern Territory are often known simply as Territorians and fully as Northern Territorians, or more informally as Top Enders and Centralians.

Gateway Shopping Centre in Palmerston walk through. (4k)

Walking through the Gateway Shopping Center in Palmerston.

Darwin, the capital city of the Northern Territory in Australia, is a thriving metropolis known for its natural beauty, rich cultural diversity, and vibrant economy. In the heart of the outer suburbs lies the Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center, a bustling hub of commerce and community life. Lets explore the significance of Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center and lets highlight its economic importance, and discussing its role in fostering community connections.

The history of Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center is deeply intertwined with the growth and development of the city itself. Darwin has a unique history, having been subjected to significant devastation during World War II and Cyclone Tracy in 1974. These events, while devastating, spurred a spirit of resilience and renewal among the city's residents. In the aftermath of Cyclone Tracy, the city was rebuilt with a focus on modernisation and urban development, and Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center played later a pivotal role in this transformation.

The shopping center, which opened its doors in 2017, was conceived as a central hub for retail and services, designed to cater to the evolving needs of Darwin's residents. Over the years, it has grown and evolved to become a modern and vibrant shopping destination, reflecting the city's progress and prosperity.

Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center holds significant economic importance for the city and the broader region. As one of the largest shopping centers in the Northern Territory, it attracts a steady flow of visitors, both local residents and tourists. This influx of foot traffic contributes substantially to the local economy by supporting a wide range of businesses, from retail stores and restaurants to entertainment venues and professional services.

Furthermore, the shopping center serves as a major employment hub, providing jobs for hundreds of individuals in the area. This not only helps to reduce unemployment rates but also fosters economic stability and growth within the city. The success of the shopping center is a testament to its ability to adapt to changing consumer preferences and market trends, ensuring its continued economic relevance.

Community Connections

Beyond its economic contributions, Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center plays a crucial role in fostering community connections. It serves as a meeting place and social hub for residents of all ages and backgrounds. People come here not only to shop but also to socialise, dine, and engage in various cultural and recreational activities.

The shopping center often hosts community events, further strengthening its ties with the local community. It provides a space for cultural exchange and diversity, reflecting the multicultural nature of Darwin itself. In this sense, it serves as more than just a retail destination; it is a gathering place where people can connect, celebrate, and share their experiences.

Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center stands as a testament to the resilience and vitality of the city it calls home. Its historical roots are deeply entwined with Darwin's journey of recovery and growth, and it continues to play a pivotal role in the economic and social fabric of the region. As a thriving hub of commerce and community life, it not only contributes to the local economy but also serves as a place where residents can come together, celebrate their diversity, and build connections. Darwin's Gateway Shopping Center is more than just a shopping destination; it is a symbol of the enduring spirit of Darwin and its bright future.

10 Brooklyn Heights Drive, Kelvin Grove, Palmerston North City, Manawatu

Sun-filled Brick Home with Paraplegic Bathroom

This is an enviable location and sun-filled traditional three double bedroom brick home just a short stroll from the Kelvin Grove Countdown Supermarket and takeaway eateries, parks, and walkways. Built in 2006 by well respected builder Lyndon Currie, the home is cleverly positioned on a generous 673 sq m (more or less) section to take advantage of all year round sun and the restful street outlook. The design brief was to incorporate spacious open plan living that allowed for two distinct areas to place larger furniture. The bedrooms were to be doubles and the master bedroom had to be extra-sized with a paraplegic sized en-suite and a walk-in wardrobe also stipulated. To complete the layout the kitchen had to be centre stage to the living. Also, there had to be loads of storage, higher than standard insulation, and the double internal access garage. This has rounded off an altogether well thought out and excellent low-maintenance one owner home in a well-connected community location close to excellent schools, recreational park, and walking tracks.

The Stuart Highway extends to Darwin's eastern satellite city of Palmerston and its suburbs.

Like much of the Top End, the Darwin region experiences a tropical climate with a wet and dry season. A period known locally as the build-up leading to Darwin's wet season sees temperature and humidity increase. Darwin's wet season typically arrives in late November to early December, bringing heavy monsoonal downpours, spectacular lightning displays, and increased cyclone activity. During the dry season, the city has clear skies and mild sea breezes from the harbour.

The greater Darwin area is the ancestral home of the Larrakia people. On 9 September 1839, HMS Beagle sailed into Darwin Harbour during its survey of the site. John Clements Wickham named the region Port Darwin in honour of their former shipmate Charles Darwin, who had sailed with them on the ship's previous voyage, which ended in October 1836. The settlement there became the town of Palmerston in 1869, but it was renamed Darwin in 1911. The city has been almost entirely rebuilt four times, following the devastation caused by the 1897 cyclone, the 1937 cyclone, Japanese air raids during World War II, and Cyclone Tracy in 1974.
