Piaţa Ovidiu or Ovidiu Square. Arial View by DRONE. - Constanta Romania - ECTV
Constanţa (Ancient Greek: Tόμις - Tomis, Latin: Tomis Constantiana, Greek Κωνστάντζα - Konstandza, Aromanian Custantsa, Ottoman Turkish كو ستنجه - Köstendje, Turkish Köstence, Bulgarian Кюстенджа - Kiustendja) is the capital city of Dobrogea County , Romania, consisting of the component localities Constanţa (the capital), Mamaia and Palazu Mare.
Constanta is one of the oldest certified cities in Romania. The first documentary record dates back to 657 î.Hr. when a Greek colony called Tomis was formed on the site of the current peninsula (and even under the waters of today, next to the Casino). [4] The settlement was conquered by the Romans in 71 î.Hr. and renamed Constantiana after the sister of Emperor Constantine the Great. During the thirteenth century the Great Sea (as it was then called the Black Sea) was dominated by Italian merchants in Genoa who helped develop the city. Subsequently, Constanta suffered a decline under Ottoman rule, becoming a simple village inhabited by Greek fishermen and Tatar breeders of horses and sheep. The locality became a city again after the construction of the Cernavoda-Constanța railway and of the port, in 1865, for the export of the Romanian grain. After the War of Independence (1877-1878), when Dobrogea became part of Romania, Constanta, the main port of the state, has grown continuously, holding this role until today. [5]
The port of Constanta covers an area of 39.26 km²,[6] has a length of almost 30 km, is the largest port in the Black Sea basin and is on the 4th place in Europe.
Constanta was founded following the Greek colonization of the Black Sea basin (Greek Pontos Euxeinos) by millennial settlers in the VII-V centuries î.Hr., under the name of Tomis. This name is probably derived from the Greek word τομή (tomí) meaning cut, cleft. According to legend, Jason and his Argonauts would have stopped here after being sent to the Caucasus to steal the Golden Fleece. Pursued by the fleet of the King of Colhida, Aietes the Hawk, they would have cut into pieces his son, Absyrtos, until then held hostage on board, in order to force the king to search and collect the remains for the funeral ceremony, thus giving the Argonauts time to flee to the Bosphorus[7]. But archaeologists consider it more plausible that the cut (from the shoreline) would have designated rather the ancient port, today submerged, in front of the Casino. Another possible origin of the name would be Tomiris, mythical queen of the Masages, a Scythian people living between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, quoted by Herodotus.
The Millenians found on these places a Getic settlement, the new city reaching the level of a polis only in the IV-III century î.Hr. The port used by the Greeks for trade with the inhabitants of these regions (Dacians, Scythians and Celts) allowed the development of an urbanistic center. Tomis became a part of the Roman Empire in 46 AD, and Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet, was exiled here between 8–17 AD, spending the last eight years of his life in Tomis.
The port city withstood the turbulent times of the third and fourth centuries, troubled by numerous Gothic, Scythian and Hunic invasions, becoming the residence of the province of Scythia Minor (Latin Scythia Minor, Greek Μικρά Σκυθία / Mikrá Skithía). After the partition of the Roman Empire, Tomis, along with all of Scythia Minor, reverted to the Eastern Roman Empire and was renamed Constantiana. It remained a fortress and a port of the Eastern Empire until the seventh century, when it was deserted due to the invasions of the Slavs and Proto-Bulgarians, who conquered Scythia Minor in 680 after the Battle of Ongal.

The busy Old Town Constanta centers on Ovidiu Square, with a statue of the poet Ovid, and the stately Museum of National History and Archeology.
Ovidiu Square is a very beautiful area in the heart of the pedestrian zone of the old city part of Constanta.
It's a joy to walk over here, take your time and enjoy each step, each building.
Our walk continued on Tomis Blvd which is very lively, filled with restaurants and coffee shops.

Last days of summer in Constanta. DJI flight 4K over the city of Constanta in Romania 2023. View of the Old Town, Modern Beach, Lake Tabacariei, City Park Mall, St.Mina Orthodox Church, Tomis Tourist Port, The Casino of Constanta, Museum of National History and Archeology, Mosque Carol I and other.
Constanta is the largest seaport in Romania and on the Black Sea, the largest city in the Dobruja region and on the Black Sea coast of Romania. There are mineral springs in the vicinity of the city. Long sea beaches.
On the site of Constanta stood the city of Tomy - an ancient Greek colony on the Black Sea, founded around 500 BC. e. for trade.
In 29 B.C. e. the region was taken over by the Romans. In the year 8, the poet Ovid was exiled here by Augustus, who died here 8 years later. In Constanta, on Ovid Square (Piaţa Ovidiu), there is now a monument to the poet. The city was later renamed Constantiana in honor of Constantia, the half-sister of Constantine the Great (274-337).

CONSTANTA Romania 🇷🇴 (City and Beaches Tour)
CONSTANTA Romania 🇷🇴 (City and Beaches Tour): Constanta is a seaside town on the Black Sea in southeastern Romania. Founded around 600BC, Constanta was originally called Tomis when the city was founded by Greek colonists. Then the city was conquered by the Romans in 71BC and was renamed Constantiana by the Roman Emperor, Constantine the Great. Then city fell under Turkish rule during 15th century and the name of the city was shortened to Constanta. You can visit the oldest city in Romania and see historical monuments and ancient ruins in the Old Town. Plus, you can also visit the defunct grand casino, museums and beach resorts in both Constanta and Mamaia.
Best things to do in Constanta Romania:
1, 2 & 3. See historic monument and ancient artefacts around Ovid Square Piaka Ovidiu (Ovid Square) is the main square in Old Town Constanta and it has some of the best attractions in Constanta. First, there is a bronze statue honouring the first major Roman poet, Ovid (Publius Ovidius Naso).
Behind the statue is the Muzeul de Istorie Nationala si Arheologie (Museum of National History and Archeology).
4. See a panoramic view of the coast from Great Mahmudiye Mosque
Next, see Moscheea Mare Mahmoud II (Great Mahmudiye Mosque), the largest mosque in Romania.
Not only do you have to check out the Neo-Byzantine and Romanian architectural elements of this mosque, you also have to climb up 140 steps for a stunning view of Constanta harbour. The 50m (164 foot) tall minaret has a narrow spiral staircase that can take you all the way to the top.
5, 6, 7, & 8. Visit some of the best attractions in the historic Peninsula District of Constanta
Constanta’s Peninsula District is at the southeast end of the city. In this historic part of Constanta, there are a few highlights that you should look for:
Casa cu Lei (House with Lions) (Strada Dianei, Constanța) – currently an abandoned building but you can still admire the pre-Romanesque and Genoese architectural styles. Look for the four columns with the sculptured lions.
Biserica Sfântul Nicolae (St. Nicholas Church) (Strada Maior Gheorghe Șonțu, Constanța) – visit the Neo-Byzantine white church that was once a Bulgarian church. Catedrala Sfinții Apostoli Petru și Pavel (Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul) (Strada Arhiepiscopiei 25, Constanța) – visit the Greco-Roman style church that was partially destroyed during WWII. Look for the oak iconostasis, candelabras and candle stands, frescos and the relics of several Saints.
Stradela Vântului (Strada Vântului 6-8, Constanța) – also called the Wind Street, is the narrowest pedestrian street in the Constanta, and second narrowest in Romania.
9. Peek through the scaffold to see the Constanta Casino. Cazino Constanța (Constanta Casino) is possibly one of the best attractions in Constanta because of its grandiose architecture. But these days, the casino is hiding behind a lot of scaffold.
But let me tell you what I learned about the Constanta Casino. It was originally built in 1880 in Art Nouveau architectural-style and was functioning as a casino.
10. See sculptures and monuments along the seaside promenadeContinue walking on the promenade along the waterfront. At the east end, there are several monuments and statues.
Seen in the photo is the Mihai Eminescu Statue, a statue commerating the great Romanian poet.
And behind the sculpture is the Farul Genovez (The Genovese Lighthouse). The 8m tall octagonal lighthouse was built around 1300 by Genoese who traded at the port and guided the ships at the sea. Today, it is an important monument along the seaside promenade.
11. Enjoy some fun in the sun at Modern Beach
Visiting Constanta means visiting some of the best Romanian beaches and the Plaja Modern (Modern Beach) is one of them.
Not far from the Old Town is the big sandy beach with clear water. You can rent a lounge and an umbrella for a few hours or get a drink at a nearby beach cafe.
12. Enjoy the beach vibe at Mamaia
Mamaia is the perfect spot for the end of your day in Constanta. This popular beach resort on the Romanian coast is 8km (5 miles) long and is sandwiched between the Black Sea and Lake Siutghiol. There are many open-air restaurants and sporting facilities (windsurfing, snorkelling, biking, tennis, beach games, etc.)
At night, Mamaia transforms into a giant party. There are dance clubs and music playing on the beach all night long. As for me, I’m not much of a party-goer myself, but I still enjoyed the vibe at night in Mamaia. I saw many young and old people strolling along the promenade and many families with young children. Mamais is the busiest between June and September. But it is much quieter during the cooler months. So depending on when you go to Mamaia, it will definitely have a different vibe.

Insula Ovidiu

Orasul Ovidiu / Filmare aeriana
Modern Beach or Plaja Modern Constanta Beach - Constanta Romania - ECTV
Plaja Modern or Modern Beach in Constanta Romania.
Modern Beach Constanta – attractions and accommodation
If you want to enjoy the beach and the sea breeze on beautiful summer days, you do not have to go to one of the resorts on the Romanian seaside, because the Modern Beach in Constanta is a well arranged one, which gathers every day many tourists and Constantians eager to relax.
Access to the beach is made on the steps that descend from the Modern Cliff. The beach has a width of 300-400 meters and impresses with its fine sand, and the entrance to the sea is smooth. Thus, it is a beach suitable for children, especially since the water has a shallow depth for a few meters offshore.
Due to the fact that on the Modern Beach there are recreational spaces, restaurants, terraces and volleyball and football fields, you will find pleasant ways to have fun with your friends or family. In addition, due to the extension and rehabilitation works carried out in 2015, the beach is much more spacious, being enlarged by about one and a half kilometers.
Near the beach there are various tourist attractions. Thus, you can go to Tomis Port, if you want to enjoy the peace and enjoy a delicious portion of seafood. After a few hours spent on the beach, you can retire to a terrace or you can go to Escape Room Constanta – a place loved by both adults and children.
