A day in Oranjestad, Aruba ( 4K HD )
Whether you're staying in one of Aruba's all-inclusives, came on a cruise or took a vacation flight on your own itinerary, one of the things to do is to hop in a car and explore its capital Oranjestad. Spanning just a few miles around the cruise terminal, Oranjestad is a condensed postcard view of the Caribbean Netherlands. You can rent a car in many places including the airport, cruise port and around town as well. Gas is not terribly expensive and you don't need much gas anyway - the island is only about 25 miles long. Oranjestad is great as a cruise ship port of call but in my view you'll see the better picture if you go beyond the walking distance from the terminal.
Oranjestad is a small town with quite a lot of one way roads. The most picturesque part of town with the Dutch architecture is about 1-2 miles in size and a day would be enough to walk about, pop into shops and boutiques, try some street food and more. Culture and atmosphere of Aruba is amazing and while this video only allows to witness that through the car window, hopefully it'll allow to judge how safe, vivid and pleasant the country is. Driving culture in Aruba is not much different from what you expect in the U.S. For the most part cars are newer, well maintained, road courtesy is there and you instantly feel at ease.
Thank you for watching!

Take a Minute in Statia 005: Aerial view of Quill & Oranjestad, St. Eustatius, Caribbean Netherlands
Take a Minute in Statia 005 takes off the ground to show you a bird's eye perspective of the island. While we explored the Botanical Garden and the Bird Trail (see short descriptions of all trails in the Quill National Park below), Yoeri flew the drone up the Quill to capture this aerial overview. On the other side the dormant volcano, the capital Oranjestad, the only town of St. Eustatius (Caribbean Netherlands) with its harbour glides through the view.
Look around. Can you believe that this was once the busiest port in the whole world?
The Dutch began to colonise various Caribbean islands in the 1630s. Sint Maarten was the first to be colonised in 1631, Curaçao in 1634, Aruba, Bonaire and St. Eustatius followed in 1636, and Saba around 1640. On the SSS islands (Sint Maarten, Saba, and Statia), settlement started on the Caribbean side. The Atlantic Ocean to the East is much wilder than the Caribbean Sea.
Already a busy trading center within the region, Statia's economy really took off in 1756 after the Dutch declared the island a free port. Without any customs duties, Statia turned into a hub for all kinds of goods — legal and illegal. Statia offered neutral ground for business in the middle of British (Jamaica, St. Kitts, Barbados, Bermuda), French (Saint-Domingue, Sainte-Lucie, Martinique, Guadeloupe), Spanish (Cuba, Santo Domingo, Puerto Rico) and Danish (Virgin Islands) territories.
Neutrality and tax-free haven were the man-made reasons for Statia's golden era. Natural factors gave the island its blessing. Conveniently located between destinations, Statia was favourable as captains could make use of the trade winds bringing ships from the east towards this volcanic rock. Obviously, there are more islands around. However, Statia was the only one providing a natural harbour that is protected from the easterly winds and offers sandy anchoring at depths of 10 to 30 meters (33 to 99 feet) providing shelter also for the biggest boats of those times. With more than 3,000 ships per year, Statia was THE busiest port in the world and turning the island into the Golden Rock.
We love the history of the island, even though it is hard to imagine the level of activity of the Golden Rock of the past. These days, trade is passing by. A lot of things are hard to get to or overly expensive. The biggest employer on the island is the oil storage facility GTI followed by the government with more or less 350 employees. Tourism-related businesses count as the third largest section of the island economy today.
At the moment, we add to the tourism-related businesses as we are filming all the hiking to, up, in, and around the Quill National Park:
Each trail gets its own clip with additional snippets, photographs, and a blog entry to inform you about the route, difficulty, and highlights to keep an eye out for. This way, you can choose the trail that is offering just the right combination of relaxation and challenge for your mood and stamina.
We already wrote about the Quill in Take a Minute in Statia 001:Zeelandia Beach to Quill: In the caption of that video clip, you find also some more information on the recent history and developments on the island as well as the reasons for the economic downfall of the Golden Rock.
The aerial shot offers a great overview of the hiking possibilities within Quill National Park. There are nine trails to explore.
1) The Quill Trail brings you from the edge of town toward the crater rim
2) The Crater Trail leads inside the dormant volcano
3) The Panorama Point Trail goes up to the highest peak on the Northern side of the volcano
4) The Around the Mountain South goes off the Quill Trail along the Southern slopes until you reach a crossing down to the Botanical Garden.
5) The Around the Mountain North continues from there all along the side of the volcano (with many ups and downs) until it hits the Quill Trail again.
6) The Mazinga Trail brings hikers to the highest point of the volcano (601 metres).
7) The Historical Trail is a relatively short detour from the Quill Trail to explore some ruins.
8) The Couchar Trail serves as an entry and exit point to Around the Mountain North and can be used as a little loop for beginning hikers, families with small children, or dogs to explore the Quill without too much elevation.
9) The Bird Trail is the shortest. It starts in the Botanical Garden and loops a little way up through the bush and features some boards with explanations of the different bird species that can be found on the island.
Over the next months, we publish all clips in this playlist:

Should You Visit St. Eustatius? - Watch This and Find Out.
Nicknamed the Golden Rock because of its history as a free port in the Caribbean and all the riches that passed through its port, St. Eustatius today is more than the sleepy little island most portray it to be. You can definitely do some relaxing but you can also hike a dormant volcano, enjoy great food and wine, explore historic monuments, relax on black sand beaches, discover an amazing underwater world, and stay at great accommodations, from budget-friendly and locally owned B and B's to a luxury resort and everything in between.
CORRECTION: the ruins in this video are NOT of a holding space for slaves but a warehouse for goods according to a volunteer at SECAR, St Eustatius Center for Archeologic Research

WOW! ONLY $25 EXCURSION! Found the CHEAPEST (and INCREDIBLE) Resort Day Pass in Bonaire!!!
We are at the last of the ABC Islands... Bonaire. We had no idea what we wanted to do in this port... we just knew we wanted a beach and snorkeling... So we walked off the ship with no booked excursion and no plans! Right outside of the ship was an information booth with maps of the island so we went and asked for a suggestion. The very nice lady told us that there was a new resort that had recently opened and were offering day passes for $25 so that sounded good to us.
A quick taxi ride and we arrived at Chogogo... WOW! We were blown away! This resort was amazing!! The sea was beautiful, with great snorkeling, but there was also a pool and even a lazy river around the resort! It wasn't busy and even though we arrived not first thing in the morning, we were able to get a great palapa which gave us comfortable shade.
Needless to say, this was an incredible day!!
