Newport Pagnell Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Buckinghamshire, and directly northeast of Milton Keynes, separated only by the M1 motorway, is the town of Newport Pagnell.
The origins of Newport Pagnell go back to the Anglo-Saxon era when it is believed to have already been an established trading settlement by this time. In the 12th century, ownership transferred to landowner Fulk Paynel (a corruption of Pagnell, or vice versa), who established Tickford Priory here, helping to elevate the town's importance. The priory was home to an order of Cluniac monks, but was ultimately dissolved in the 16th century by Henry VIII.
In the 14th century, the Church of St Peter and St Paul was built. The chancel and tower were added in the 16th century, and restoration work took place in the 19th and 20th centuries. The church is Grade I listed.
Owing to its geographic location, Newport Pagnell developed a coaching inn industry between the 17th and 19th centuries, being a staging post for those travelling between both London and Leicester and Oxford and Cambridge. In 1809 an act of parliament was passed, authorising the construction of a cast iron bridge over the River Ouzel due to the sheer volume of traffic that proved burdensome to the ancient bridge that preceded it. Thus, in 1810 Tickford Bridge was built. Standing to this day, it is one of a small handful of cast iron bridges remaining that carry modern traffic.
In 1817 the Newport Pagnell Canal opened. This was 1.25 miles in length and connected the town to the neighbouring village of Great Linford, which in turn connected it to the Grand Junction Canal (which later became the Grand Union Canal). Plans to extend it to the River Great Ouse were drawn up. However, these fell through and the canal was closed in 1864.
In 1867 a railway station opened in Newport Pagnell. This formed part of the Wolverton–Newport Pagnell line, connecting it to Wolverton on what is today the West Coast Main Line. However, the station closed to passengers in 1964, and to goods in 1967, as part of the Beeching Cuts - a controversial move to promote road travel by closing over 2,000 railway stations across Britain. Today, public transport to Newport Pagnell consists of direct buses from Milton Keynes, Olney and various other nearby settlements.
In 1955 Aston Martin moved its operations from Feltham in Middlesex (now Greater London) to Newport Pagnell. Here, over 13,300 of its cars were built by hand up until the factory's closure in 2007. The facility remains open to this day as a car dealership and service centre.
In 1960 the UK's second motorway service station opened at Newport Pagnell. This followed the opening of Watford Gap Services in Northamptonshire at more or less the same time. Both are situated on the M1 motorway which runs between London and Leeds.
In 1967 the neighbouring settlement of Milton Keynes was designated a new town. This brought significant growth to the area as it developed according to a grid pattern. Although Newport Pagnell wasn't initially included in the original 1967 designated area of the new town, it has since experienced some population growth due to its proximity to Milton Keynes.

Newport Pagnell, The Swan Revived
This is a famous hotel in Newport Pagnell. It was a coaching inn and its name has been unchanged for about 300 years. There used to be another inn near it, called The Saracen's Head. Also, the nearby village of Sherington has a public house called The Swan.
The town is by the River Great Ouse and there may have been some interest in the name because of swans on the river but the orign of the name is renowned to have been connected to the swan in the coat of arms adopted by the Staffords who were the first Dukes of Buckingham. Also, the swan is a bird with royal protection in England.
