A rainy day in the New River Gorge (West Virginia): Long Point, food, & fall views!
For our final adventure in West Virginia we’re exploring the New River Gorge, one of the most recommended spots for us to visit. Although the weather was not ideal, we still had a blast seeing the GORGEous views, eating at popular local restaurants, and seeing more fall colors.
PS: Since our visit, New River Gorge has been upgraded to be one of the 63 US National Parks!

Situated in Maricopa County, New River is one of the hidden gems of Arizona, be-speckled with natural reserves, parks, museums, and other attractions. If you're only in town for 24 hours, spend your day at the Lake Pleasant Regional Park of North Phoenix or visit New River Arizona ATV excursions for a journey of a lifetime.
It's every water enthusiast's dream, to say the least. Some popular activities in the park include boating, kayaking, and boarding along with the New River Trail AZ or the Tonto National Forest. The Lake Pleasant Regional Park has two boat launching ramps with paved parking lots and restroom facilities.
When visiting with family, you can also rent a boat for a day filled with amusement or a birthday party. If you'd rather be up in the sky rather than in the water, get tickets for the Phoenix Sunrise hot air balloon ride. The New River Gorge National River is a unit of the United States National Park Service designed to protect and maintain the New River Gorge in southern West Virginia. Established in 1978, the NPS-protected area stretches for 53 miles (85 km) from just downstream of Hinton to Hawks Nest State Park near Ansted.New River Gorge is also home to some of the country's best whitewater rafting. The focus of this rafting is in the New River Gorge from the Cunard put-in to the Fayette Station take-out. The river levels for the New River Gorge (and most other major whitewater rivers in the United States) can be checked at American Whitewater.[3]New River Gorge is also one of the most popular climbing areas on the east coast with over 1,400 established rock climbs. The cliffs at The New are located just below the rim of the gorge and are made up of a very hard Nuttall sandstone. The rock is very featured, and an abundance of crack and face routes, with occasional large roofs. Almost all climbs are one pitch long and range from 30 to 120 feet (37 m) in height. The majority of the routes in the gorge are for advanced climbers in 5.10-5.12 range of the Yosemite Decimal System with about an equal number of traditional and sport climbs.New River Gorge National River was established in 1978 as a unit of the national park system. Located in the Appalachian Mountains of southern West Virginia, the park encompasses over 72,808 acres (295 km2) of land along 53 miles (85 km) of the New River from Bluestone Dam to Hawks Nest State Park.[1] A rugged, white water river, flowing northward through deep canyons, the New River is among the oldest rivers on the continent. The park is rich in cultural and natural history and offers an abundance of scenic and recreational opportunities.President Jimmy Carter signed legislation establishing New River Gorge National River on November 10, 1978 (Public Law 95-625). New river gorge is the newest national park of the United States. It is the 63rd National park of the USA.The new river gorge is situated in West Virginia, USA. It became a National park in December 2020.
The time magazine has recognized the New River Gorge as one of the worlds greatest places in its 2021 list.
The park is mainly popular for adventure sports such as white water rafting, mountain biking and rock climbing and the New River Gorge Bridge walk.
There are 3 visitor centers in the park Canyon Rim Visitor Center, Sandstone Visitor Center and the Grandview visitor center.
Canyon rim visit center is popular for its boardwalk. From the overlook situated 178 steps down, gorgeous views of New River Gorge can be seen.
There are several trails located in the park. The most popular trails are the Grandview Rim Trail which connects the main overlook to the Turkey Spur, Endless Wall Trail, Long Point Trail and the Sandstone Falls Boardwalk and Island Loop Trail . Sandstone falls is the largest waterfall in the park. Endless wall trail is popular for Diamond Overlook with beautiful views of the new river and the gorge.
Every October, the new river gorge celebrates Bridge Day where hundreds of adventure enthusiasts jump from the new river gorge bridge.
Fayetteville is the nearest popular town which has decent amount of lodging and dining options. Popular restaurants include Pies and Pints, a chain popular for its delicious pizzas and variety of craft beers.
