Tunisian Oasis Vacation Travel Video Guide

Gabes is the beginning of a journey through what is the fascinating oasis of Tunisia, that contains all the mystique of the Orient: art, culture, history and endless desert horizons.

The Ghorfas of Medenine boast a variety of souvenir shops and in the past, the multi-floored mud buildings served as dwellings and storage areas for the semi-nomads of the region. A Ghorfa is a collection of buildings that form part of large complexes with hundreds of buildings grouped together around large courtyards.

Surrounded by desert is the sleepy village of Douz that was once a thriving camel trading centre. Now it contains markets and is also the location of the famous Sahara Festival.

The Torra Ruins in Mansurah are a further highlight of the journey across the Tunisian oasis. The sun beats down relentlessly on the boundless Sahara and individual palm trees appear as green guardians of the oasis.

Tozeur, the 'Eden of The Desert', is a safe haven for almost 20 villages. Its unique architecture is highly impressive and the walls of its houses consist of loam bricks that form geometrical patterns.

Nefta's new town with its nearby souk quarter is situated in the east. On the western side is the older district with its sacred buildings and twisting alleys. For more than 1,000 years the town has been the religious centre of a mystic Moslem sect known as the Sufis.

As the shadows of evening begin to fall and the light of the setting sun illuminates the Tunisian oasis in a spectacular purple light, everything combines to make this a most memorable and atmospheric experience.

Tunis is a North African city with a long history. After the Hasfides and Osmans, the Spanish Moors came but then had to give way to French colonial rule until present day Independence. In the old town, there are more than 700 historic monuments which include 200 palaces, a colourful variety of buildings and numerous mosques.Among shoreline lava rock is the entrance to the Ghar El-Kebir, a collection of sandstone grottos. During Roman times, thousands of slaves were forced to bring building material for Carthage and El Djem from subterranean shafts. In Sousse, the simple fort of Ribat is probably the oldest Islamic building in North Africa, in which Muslim soldiers lived in monastery-like isolation and in the town’s Archaeological Museum there is a fantastic range of mosaics, predominantly from Punic and Roman excavations. Gabes is an oasis town which overflows with luxuriant floral splendour. By horse and carriage visitors can travel through one of the most beautiful maritime oases in Tunisia where, under 500,000 date palms, tobacco, henna, pumpkins, apricots and bananas thrive. The focal point of important caravan routes and trading centre for goods from Libya and Black Africa, Medenine is a very charming and lively city. Its reinforced honeycomb-shaped caves were the extraordinary-looking buildings that many will recall from the film ‘Star Wars’. The Sahara is the largest desert on earth, with different landscapes such as rock deserts, salt deserts and serene oases. Kebili is located on the edge of a huge salt lake and is a typical desert village with a green oasis and Artesian springs which provide water for its fruit and vegetable gardens. Nefta is also a green paradise in the desert, an oasis town that boasts no less than 152 Artesian wells. Dougga contains Tunisia’s most important ruins which nestle in the hills among shimmering olive trees and poppy fields. Endless deserts and fertile oases, busy towns and isolated mountain regions, Roman temples and Muslim mosques: Tunisia is tempting!

Nefta Viewpoint, Tunisia

Welcome back everyone!

Join us on a mini Adventure to Nefta's viewpoint in Tunisia.

Nefta is the religious center of the Bled el Djerid, the Land of Palms, with more than 24 mosques and 100 marabouts. The marabouts still attract pilgrims from all over southern Tunisia and even from Algeria.

Nefta is believed to have been settled originally by shepherds who came from the kingdom of Napata. The Romans and later the Byzantines built forts in the oasis (Nepte) to provide protection against raids by desert nomads. In Byzantine times Nefta and Tozeur were episcopal sees. In the mid-7th century Nefta was conquered by the Arabs and, in spite of fierce resistance, converted to Islam.

The salt-flats near Nefta were used as a filming location for the Star Wars movies in the late 20th century. During the film's construction, the directors chose the town to host Luke Skywalker's house.

Dall'oasi di Nefta alle acque termali nel sud della Tunisia

Vicinio a Tozeur, Nefta è un piccolo villaggio con un delizioso centro storico e soprattutto una bella piscina naturale alimentata da acque calde. Queste sorgenti sono abbastanza diffuse ai confini del Sahara: molte ormai sono esaaurite, ma siamo riusciti a trovarne altre ancora in funzione.
E poi qui ci sono i migliori datteri dell'Africa, i deglet nur: una prelibatezza che per lo più viene esportata a discapito dei mercati tunisini.
E infine Salem, il mio grande amico djerbino, mi ha raccontato come il vino della palma (sì, il vino) avesse fatto perdere la testa a Ulisse e ai suoi uomini tanto da non volere più lasciare l'isola

Visiting Tunisia

A short visit to Tunisia. I visited the Colosseum of El Jem, in which scenes of movies like Gladiator and Ben Hur were filmed. The city is located in a very hot and arid place, and you will find a lot of small shops to buy nice souvenirs, even if you don't actually want to buy anything (you will understand what I mean when you visit the place).

Nefta is a beautiful oasis city boarding the Sahara desert and the border with Algeria. Here you can visit the oasis by calish and take a look at the dates farm.

During my visit to Tunisia I visited many more places but unfortunately the footage disappeared and I will not be able to share it.

زيارة قصيرة إلى تونس. زرت الكولوسيوم الجم، والذي تم تصويره مشاهد من الأفلام مثل المصارع وبن حور. وتقع المدينة في مكان حار جدا وجاف، وسوف تجد الكثير من المحلات التجارية الصغيرة لشراء الهدايا التذكارية لطيفة، حتى لو كنت لا تريد فعلا لشراء أي شيء (تفهمون ما أعنيه عندما قمت بزيارة المكان) .

نفطة هي مدينة احة جميلة الصعود الصحراء والحدود مع الجزائر. هنا يمكنك زيارة احة قبل الحصان ونلقي نظرة على المزرعة التواريخ.

خلال زيارتي إلى تونس زرت العديد من الأماكن ولكن للأسف اختفى لقطات وأنا لن تكون قادرة على المشاركة فيها.

Nefta is a serene oasis near Chott el Jerid. It is known for its beautiful palm groves. There are serene hot springs in the area. Tozeur is another nearby relaxing spot. Tozeur's old town is charming and peaceful. Dar Chrait Museum is an interesting visit in Tozeur. Relaxing sunset views can be enjoyed near Chott el Jerid. You can take a stroll around the picturesque salt flats. The desert scenery is breathtakingly serene. There are cozy guesthouses in the region. Local restaurants offer delicious traditional cuisine.

Chott el Jerid, Tunisia

Chott el Jerid is a large endorheic salt lake in southern Tunisia. It is the largest salt pan in the Sahara Desert. The lake covers an impressive area of over 7,000 square kilometers. Chott el Jerid is known for its strikingly beautiful landscape. During the dry summer months, the lake bed becomes a vast expanse of salt. The lake often has mirages, creating an illusion of water. In some places, the salt forms interesting geometric patterns. Various films, including 'Star Wars', have used the area as a filming location. Tourists visit to experience the unique environment and natural beauty. The lake is located near the towns of Tozeur and Nefta. Chott el Jerid is also home to several species of migratory birds.
