Hima Well, one of the most ancient and significant stops along the ancient trade routes of Arabia, untouched and unaltered, continues to fascinate researchers and archaeologists.
Located at the oldest known toll station on an important ancient desert caravan route, the wells of Bi’r Ḥimā date back at least 3,000 years and still produce fresh water.
Situated in an arid, mountainous area of southwest Saudi Arabia, on one of the Arabian Peninsula’s ancient caravan routes, Ḥimā Cultural Area contains a substantial collection of rock art images depicting hunting, fauna, flora and lifestyles in a cultural continuity of 7,000 years.
Travelers and armies camping on the site left a wealth of rock inscriptions and petroglyphs through the ages and until the late 20th century, most of which are preserved in pristine condition. Inscriptions are in different scripts, including Musnad, South-Arabian, Thamudic, Greek and Arabic. The property and its buffer zone are also rich in unexcavated archaeological resources in the form of cairns, stone structures, interments, stone tool scatters and ancient wells.
Hima Arch is one of the most beautiful rock formations in the Hima Region next to the Hima Wells. Arch is only accessible by a 4x4 vehicle as it’s located in the desert unlike Wells which can be accessed by a Sedan car as well. Several drawings and ancient inscriptions can also be found on the arch.
To date, 1,293 human drawings, 5,121 animal drawings, 3,616 Thamudic inscriptions, 2,775 Ancient South Arabian script inscriptions and three Nabataean inscriptions have been found in the region, while search and excavation operations are continuing in the Kingdom in general, and the region in particular, to uncover more monuments and historical cultural heritage.

Exploring Southern Saudi Arabia (Al Okhdood, Najran)
The archaeological site of Al-Okhdood in Najran, in the south of Saudi Arabia, lie in a village carrying the same name and is considered a historical treasure dating back to more than 2,000 years.

Located in the village of Al Ukhdood in the southern city of Najran, Al Ukhdood Archaeological Site is considered an archaeological treasure dating back more than 2,000 years.
Al-Ukhdood's historical village contains many ancient sites dating to the Byzantine, Umayyad and Abbasid period, proving that it was once a crucial area for trade and agriculture, along with a cultural touch.
Al-Ukhdood tells the story of the “People of the Groove” and were mentioned in the Holy Quran in Surah Al-Burooj. It witnessed historical events and wars 2,000 years ago, and consequently led to its burning with its residents leaving it in ruin and ashes, when the last king of that era wanted to take revenge of Najran Christian residents who refused to convert to Judaism.
Many archaeological works have been conducted in this area. The excavations uncovered the remnants of a mosque northeast of the site that dates back to the first century after hijrah.
Those excavations also uncovered inscriptions that go back to 7000 BC to 1000 BC, portraying the way the residents of that era how they hunted dogs, camels and other animals, using various weapons including spears, sticks, arches and double-headed arrows.
The site is rich with artifacts and remnants of ancient drawings and engravings on stones, such as a human hand, a horse, a camel and snakes carved, in addition to remnants of the Mosque.

Exploring Najran - The closest to Yemen we may ever come! نجران
The City of Najran نجران sits in a valley right on the border of Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
We took full advantage of our day in the little Saudi border town of Najran. We hiked up to the highest view in the area, Castle Raom, and then we made our way to the Najran Fort and Market. After a great traditional Kabsa lunch, we visited Al Ukhded Archeological Site (you've GOT to listen to the history of this site - more at 4:46).
We wrapped up the evening at everyone's favorite coffee shop Central Perk - oh wait, no. It wasn't Central Perk, but we did find a 'Friends' themed coffee shop in the city!

Today we are traveling from Riyadh to Najran. Najran (Arabic: نجران Najrān), is a city in southwestern Saudi Arabia near the border with Yemen. Najran was a Yemeni center of cloth making and originally, the kiswah or the cloth of the Ka'aba was made there (the clothing of the Kaba first started by the Yemeni kings of Saba). There used to be a Jewish community at Najran, renowned for the garments they manufactured. In this vlog we will be exploring the rich culture of this Yemen border town and meet many Yemeni people. We will also visit the gun and knife market which is a popular thing to do in Najran. Watch till the end to see the most shocking part!
