EPIC Adventure in the PHILIPPINES! Episode 21
We Made it to the Philippines
We left for the airport in KSA at 4:30 am. It is about an hour's drive to the airport by private driver. The check-in is a simple process, and we made our way to the gate. The first flight is a quick and easy hop over to Doha, where we had a several-hour layover. Then the long nine-hour flight to Manila. Our plane out of Manila on, Cebu Air, was delayed significantly, so we had to take a much later flight. We ended up getting into Cebu around 11:30 pm. Originally we were going to take the driver to Badian Wellness Resort and get in around 2 am, but we decided to get a hotel and leave the next morning.
The next morning, we left for the three-hour drive to Badian. The distance isn't that far, but the road is a narrow two-lane road with lots of traffic. We turned off of the main road onto a dirt road and drove for about 15 minutes. We were worried as the road was in disrepair and looked semi-deserted.
Once we got to the dock, we had to check in with the guard station and he called us the hotel water taxi. Then a quick 10-minute boat ride to the island where we were met with very friendly faces, and leis.
Our room was much larger than we expected because the resort upgraded our room because the family rooms were under construction. However, upon finding out that the pool closed at 5 pm, we upgraded again to a room with an infinity pool.
We had dinner at the restaurant, where we found they did not have most of the items on the menu, so we ordered pizza and some drinks to go.
We were very excited to get the vacation started so we all got into bed early, after dealing with the massive lizard because tomorrow we have to get up at 4 am to catch the driver at 5 am!!

Some 1,600 islands, thick with greenery, form a maze of channels in the azure waters off northeastern Vietnam. Although people have lived in the region of Ha Long Bay for thousands of years, most of the islands remain uninhabited. But these coves and natural towers are rich with wildlife. For centuries, this spectacular seascape has inspired wonder.
The name Ha Long, Vietnamese for “descending dragon,” is reflected in a legend: Once, when the Viet people faced invasion, a dragon flew down from heaven to their defense. The creature sprayed not only fire, but also jewels that became the green archipelago.
The scientific explanation for the rock formations, known as karst, is also amazing. For millions of years, seashells and sediments fell to an ancient seafloor, forming solid rock. Tectonic activity raised the resulting limestone above water. Rainfall and rivers dissolved exposed rock, and carved valleys that flooded after the last ice age, creating this rare example of a karst field at sea.
Features include lakes and caves through the islands, and notches and tunnels where seawater has worn at the pillars' foundations. The fantastic landscape also continues into two adjacent national parks, on Cat Ba Island and Bai Tu Long Bay.
You can go kayaking, caving, or even take a ride in a seaplane to experience the grandeur of these enchanting tropical islands.

Bringing My Wife to the Philippines for the First Time
It's finally happening - we are finally going to the Philippines! Although I (Mico) was born in the Philippines, it will be Nicole's first time visiting the country I was born in and spent the first 6 years of my life. Bringing my wife to the Philippines for the first time is really exciting, but also a little nerve-wracking! This is also the first time I will be going back to the Philippines in 15 years, so lots of questions have been coming up for me about what it means to be Filipino and how that coexists with my dual-identity as a Canadian.
Although there are lots of question as I bring my wife to the Philippines for the first time, we are also both SO excited!! We will be spending 2 amazing months exploring this beautiful country all while I learn more about what it means to be Filipino and hopefully connecting with my roots a bit. I am so proud to be Filipino, and Nicole is so proud to be married to a Filipino, and hopefully our time in the Philippines will give us the chance to connect with my Filipino heritage in a new way.
Today's video is a travel day vlog. We started the travel day in Sri Lanka and make one stop in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, before hopping our second flight to Manila, Philippines. The travel day is all overnight, so it was a bit of a rough one. Thankfully, flying the Sri Lanka and Malaysia to Philippines isn't too far a distance, so the journey went off without a hitch.
Being a Filipino-Canadian couple is a pretty awesome experience for the most part. Now that we are in the Philippines, we're pretty sure being able to have two countries to call home could be the biggest perk of our inter-racial relationship! I am really hoping to make my wife's first time in the Philippines a really special one so that we can revisit the country I was born in many times in the future. As full-time travelers, we are always excited about finding countries we feel comfortable settling in for a while, and we think Philippines will be one of these countries for us.
Aside from the incredible beaches and destinations we will be visiting in the Philippines, I am most excited for my Canadian wife to try Filipino food and experience more of the culture, but also to meet my Filipino family! And then there is also the chance to see her first impression of the Philippines! I cannot wait to see what she thinks of the country I was born in.
