Barnaul. Altay. Siberia. Russia. Aug, 2023. 4K

Good afternoon, dear friends! It is very nice to see you all safe and sound gathered around the monitor to watch another video from the series about our trip to Altay.

And there's an interesting piece of information… right here... It turns out that there is the Altay Territory and the Altay Republic... and these are in fact two different subjects of the Russian Federation.

The capital of the Altay Territory is the city of Barnaul, through which we are currently traveling by cab, and the capital of the Altay Republic is Gorno-Altaysk.

And the main difference between these two regions... I wonder what you think? Which one?

Well, yes, I agree, one of the obvious differences is that the Altay Territory is mainly a plain - steppes and forests..., but the Altay Republic is exclusively a mountain kingdom.

This is true, but the main difference lies in the population. The Altay Territory is inhabited mainly by Russians - 94% of the population, but in the Altay Republic even 35% of the population are indigenous people.

The city of Barnaul is the administrative center of the Altay Territory. At present, just over six hundred thousand people live here.

Barnaul is located in Siberia at the confluence of the Barnaul and Ob rivers.

According to one of the versions that seems most reliable to me, it was the river Barnaul that gave the city its name. The name is made up of two Celtic words: Boruan - wolves and ul - river, water. That is, it turns out, in the sense of a wolf river.

The distance from Barnaul to Moscow in a straight line is almost 3,000 kilometers.

And a little history… Barnaul appeared in the 1730s as a tiny village where the owner of metallurgical plants Akinfiy Demidov housed 200 peasants assigned to him, who were transported to Altay to set up his new silver smelter.

What else should we visit in Barnaul?

- Altay State of Local Lore Museum.
- The Museum World of stone.
- Taste chocolate with cannabis at a very curious place called the Mountain Pharmacy.
- Take a walk through the Emerald Park.
- And of course, there is plenty to see in the streets of the city.

पृथ्वी पर स्वर्ग से कम नही है ये देश, सस्ता भी |Facts About Armenia | Armenia Tour Guide.

Armenia is a small, landlocked country in the South Caucasus region of Eurasia. It shares borders with Turkey to the west, Georgia to the north, Azerbaijan to the east, and Iran to the south. Armenia has a rich history and culture, dating back to ancient times, and is known for its stunning landscapes, including snow-capped mountains, verdant valleys, and pristine lakes.

Armenia has a population of around 3 million people and its capital city is Yerevan. The official language is Armenian and the majority of the population practices Christianity, specifically the Armenian Apostolic Church. The country has a parliamentary system of government and its economy is primarily driven by agriculture, mining, and tourism.

Despite its small size, Armenia has made significant contributions to world culture, including the invention of the Armenian alphabet and the development of early Christian architecture. The country has also faced challenges, including a long-standing conflict with neighboring Azerbaijan over the Nagorno-Karabakh region.

Soviet remainings in Nagorno Karabakh

Nagorno Karabakh (Russian: Нагорный Карабах, lit. 'mountainous Karabakh'; Armenian: Լեռնային Ղարաբաղ; Azerbaijani: Dağlıq Qarabağ) is a landlocked region in the South Caucasus, within the mountainous range of Karabakh, lying between Lower Karabakh and Zangezur, and covering the southeastern range of the Lesser Caucasus mountains.
Nagorno Karabakh is a disputed territory, internationally recognized as part of Azerbaijan, but mostly governed by the unrecognised Republic of Artsakh (formerly named Nagorno Karabakh Republic (NKR)) since the first Nagorno Karabakh War. Since the end of the war in 1994, representatives of the governments of Armenia and Azerbaijan have been holding peace talks mediated by the OSCE Minsk Group on the region's disputed status.
On the morning of 27 September 2020, clashes in the unresolved Nagorno Karabakh conflict resumed along the Nagorno Karabakh Line of Contact. Both the armed forces of Azerbaijan and Armenia reported military and civilian casualties. The United Nations strongly condemned the conflict and called on both sides to deescalate tensions and resume meaningful negotiations without delay.
The region is usually equated with the administrative borders of the former Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast, comprising 4,400 square kilometres (1,700 sq mi). The historical area of the region, however, encompasses approximately 8,223 square kilometres (3,175 sq mi).
The prefix Nagorno- derives from the Russian attributive adjective nagorny (нагорный), which means highland. The Azerbaijani names of the region include the similar adjectives dağlıq (mountainous) or yuxarı (upper). Such words are not used in the Armenian name, but appeared in the region's official name during the Soviet era as Nagorno Karabakh Autonomous Oblast. Other languages apply their own wording for mountainous, upper, or highland; for example, the official name used by the Nagorno Karabakh Republic in French is Haut-Karabakh, meaning Upper Karabakh.
The names for the region in the various local languages all translate to mountainous Karabakh, or mountainous black garden:
Armenian: Լեռնային Ղարաբաղ, transliterated Leṙnayin Ġarabaġ. Azerbaijani: Dağlıq Qarabağ, Дағлыг Гарабағ (mountainous Karabakh) or Yuxarı Qarabağ, Јухары Гарабағ (upper Karabakh)
Russian: Нагорный Карабах, transliterated Nagornyy Karabakh or Nagornyi Karabah.
Armenians living in the area often call Nagorno Karabakh Artsakh (Armenian: Արցախ), the name of the 10th province of the ancient Kingdom of Armenia. Urartian inscriptions (9th–7th centuries BC) use the name Urtekhini for the region. Ancient Greek sources called the area Orkhistene.

Karabakh (including modern-day Nagorno Karabakh), became a protectorate of the Russian Empire by the Kurekchay Treaty, signed between Ibrahim Khalil Khan of Karabakh and general Pavel Tsitsianov on behalf of Tsar Alexander I in 1805, according to which the Russian monarch recognized Ibrahim Khalil Khan and his descendants as the sole hereditary rulers of the region. However, its new status was only confirmed following the outcome of the Russo-Persian War (1804-1813), when through the loss in the war, Persia formally ceded Karabakh to the Russian Empire per the Treaty of Gulistan (1813), before the rest of Transcaucasia was incorporated into the Empire in 1828 by the Treaty of Turkmenchay, which came as an outcome of the Russo-Persian War (1826-1828).
In 1822, 9 years after passing from Iranian to Russian control, the Karabakh Khanate was dissolved, and the area became part of the Elisabethpol Governorate within the Russian Empire. In 1823 the five districts corresponding roughly to modern-day Nagorno-Karabakh was 90.8% Armenian
The present-day conflict over Nagorno Karabakh has its roots in the decisions made by Joseph Stalin and the Caucasian Bureau (Kavburo) during the Sovietization of Transcaucasia. Stalin was the acting Commissar of Nationalities for the Soviet Union during the early 1920s, the branch of the government under which the Kavburo was created. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, Karabakh became part of the Transcaucasian Democratic Federative Republic, but this soon dissolved into separate Armenian, Azerbaijani, and Georgian states. Over the next two years (1918–1920), there were a series of short wars between Armenia and Azerbaijan over several regions, including Karabakh. In July 1918, the First Armenian Assembly of Nagorno-Karabakh declared the region self-governing and created a National Council and government. Later, Ottoman troops entered Karabakh, meeting armed resistance by Armenians.

Places That Don't Exist: South Ossetia, Abkhazia 1 of 4

There are almost 200 official countries in the world. But there are dozens more breakaway states which are determined to be separate and independent.
The breakaway states have their own rulers, parliaments or warlords, and are home to millions of people, but they're not officially recognised as proper countries by the rest of the world.
Several have their own armies and police forces, and issue passports and even postage stamps which the rest of the world ignores. All of the breakaway states have declared independence after violent struggles with a neighbouring state.
Some now survive peacefully, but others are a magnet for terrorists and weapons smuggling, and have armies ready for a fight. Several could be at the centre of future wars which threaten their regions and the wider world.
In a world of easy adventure tourism, Simon visits breakaway states & unrecognized nations which don't usually feature on the tourist trail: Somaliland, Transniestria, South Ossetia, Taiwan, Abkhazia, Ajaria and Nagorno-Karabkh
Welcome to Places That Don't Exist...

Georgia, South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria

The former Soviet state of Georgia has a particular problem with breakaway states. After independence from Moscow three parts of the country -- South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Adjaria, broke away from Georgia. Conflicts broke out, thousands were killed, and the whole region has suffered ever since. The new President of Georgia, who Simon meets in a lift, is trying to re-unify the country, but he faces a difficult task.
Simon travels across the frontline to visit South Ossetia -- a self-declared country which has had its own flag, army and government for 12 years. The Ossetian people speak a different language to Georgians, and their government has vowed to fight to the death rather than rejoin the Georgian fold.
Simon persuades a tough Ossetian Foreign Ministry official to let him have a look around. Tensions are high between Georgia and South Ossetia, and the Ossetians are suspicious of foreigners, particularly when a government guide tells locals in the market that Simon's from London, America. After his nationality is explained people become friendlier, although locals are tense because everyone has someone they love on the dangerous Georgian frontline and war is imminent. Everywhere Simon goes he's followed by state security.
Back in Georgia proper Simon realises war is close when he finds a troop train packed with soldiers and tanks. He's chased away by armed guards.
Heading west to the former breakaway region of Adjaria, Simon visits the palatial home of the former dictator. His son used to race a Lambourghini along the main street of the region, much to the anger of locals earning an average £15 a month.
Elsewhere in Georgia, Simon and his BBC crew are the first film unit ever allowed inside a major former Soviet military base. In a chilling scene, they find thousands of tonnes of explosives unguarded and huge working missiles, any of which could be stolen by criminals or terrorists, and which are capable of destroying skyscrapers.
