What's it like surfing in the Maldives? Are the waves good? When is the surf season? Is Coke's better than Chickens?
After spending around 10 days in Thulusdhoo in the North Atolls of the Maldives, I've put together tips from my experience there and from speaking to people who have spent longer in the area.
Thulusdhoo is clearly not the only place that you can surf in the Maldives. In fact, I had not idea that the Maldives span over 800km north to south and over 90,000 square kilometres. As such, this is by no means an exhaustive list of tips. Though whilst the South atolls may be more exposed to Indian Ocean swells, it's hard to beat the convenience of Thulusdhoo as it's only 30 minutes from the capital and international airport in Male.
Spoiler alert: I loved it.
Coke's
Named after the Coca Cola factory on the island, this is a right hand reef point break that offers space for turns and barrels for those who are patient (especially in the end section).
Most people paddle out from the small island in front of the break but I dinged a board and stood on a sea urchin so ended up paddling from the main beach and around the reef.
It's the most famous wave in the area and for good reason! If you want to get barrelled, Coke's is your best bet. Strong currents can appear from nowhere, but are manageable most of the time.
Chickens
Across the channel from Coke's is essentially its opposite. A left hander with a softer take off, this waves was way more fun than I thought it would be.
Supposedly when everything lines up, Chickens offers incredibly long barrels. In addition, it's where I heard of the most people seeing Manta Rays in the surf.
Pay $5-$10 USD for a return trip via boat across the channel.
Sultans
A 20 minute boat ride from Thulusdhoo ($10 - 5 people minimum) and the other side of Himmafushi. Supposedly never closes out, though I was lucky with a big swell so there were definitely close outs.
Easy take off and long mellow walls for cut backs, with a sometimes punchy and barreling end section.
Jailbreaks
Right next to Sultans, Jailbreaks offers similar long mellow walls and lots of space for turns. A pulse from the swell hit when we were surfing there and it exceeded double over head surprisingly quickly!
Overall, I thought that the Maldives was going to beautiful white sand beaches and clear water, but average surf. Oh how I was wrong. Admittedly I did arrive in time for the biggest swell of the year (season runs March to October, I was there in September).
Regardless though, it is an amazing place to surf. The surroundings are incredible, as you would expect from the Maldives. The surprise was in the quality of the waves!
A few other tips:
- Ding repair on Thulusdhoo isn't great so if you can hold off to get boards fixed elsewhere, that's probably advisable.
- The sun is the strongest I've ever experienced, take LOTS of suncream/rash vest.
- Go snorkelling. Take a break from surfing for a few hours and go to the fish tank, it's like swimming in an aquarium.

The Malé Friday Mosque or the Malé Hukuru Miskiy also known as the Old Friday Mosque is one of the oldest and most ornate mosques in the city of Malé, Kaafu Atoll, Maldives. Coral boulders of the genus Porites, found throughout the archipelago, are the basic materials used for construction of this and other mosques in the country because of its suitability. Although the coral is soft and easily cut to size when wet, it makes sturdy building blocks when dry. The mosque was added to the tentative UNESCO World Heritage cultural list in 2008 as unique examples of sea-culture architecture. Master carpenters of the Malé Hukuru Miskiy were Ali Maavadi Kaleyfaanu and Mahmud Maavadi Kaleyfaanu from Kondey, Huvadu. The calligrapher was Chief Justice Al Faqh Al Qazi Jamaaludheen. It took 2 years to construct the mosque. In terms of artistic excellence and construction technique using only interlocking assembly, it is one of the finest coral stone buildings of the world.
#Mulee'aage, meaning the new house of Muli was built on the site of Mulee'ge, the ancestral home of Shamsuddeen. Mulee'aage was also the home of the Sultan Hasan 'Izz ud-din (or Dhon Bandaarain 1759-66). It was the private residence of Dhon Bandaarain's mother, Amina Dhiyo daughter of Mohamed, the Katheeb of Muli. It remained with the Huraa Dynasty rulers throughout its history. The last occupant of Mulee'aage was Prince Mulee'ge Manippulhu, who later ascended the throne as Sultan Muhammad Shamsuddeen III in 1892.
Neither Mulee'aage nor Mulee'ge ever served as a Royal Palace. However, it is located just a stone's throw away from the site of the former royal palace, now the Sultan's Park and the National Museum of Maldives. Most of the buildings in the royal palace grounds were demolished during Ibrahim Nasir's presidency in the late 1960s. As such, today the nearest one could get to a royal Maldivian palace is Mulee'aage in Male’ and the Utheemu Ganduvaru on the island of Utheemu.
Mulee'aage was occupied by Prince Hassan Izzuddin between 1920 and 1934. The house did not prove auspicious for the prince, though apparently he spent a lot of time there. It was famous throughout Male' as a place for merriment and gaiety with numerous music and dance performances organized by the young prince for his entertainment. Izzuddin however soon became the victim of a smear campaign organized by his uncle Al Ameer Abdul Majeed Rannabandeyri Kilegefaanu and cousin Hassan Fareed. Ultimately he was discredited and banished in 1934 to the isolated southerly island of Fuvahmulah where he died in 1938. (From: Wikipedia)

This video is from our Maldives Travel Vlog series. It’s all about how we spent our Day 5 in Maldives, our Full day excursion in Maldives. I went for Island hopping to the Local nearby main island/ Atoll, Muli Atol. Deep was babysitting kriday as kriday was sleeping and we do not want to disturb him and his routine. In this video you will see me exploring the Maldives islands with some local Maldivian and fellow guest of Medhufushi Island Resort.
The Maldives is the most gorgeous place on earth. Its untouched white sand beaches and crystal clear blue green ocean is worth visit to. Kriday enjoyed his first foreign trip, it was the best vacation or chilled out holiday, we have ever experienced.
Island hopping Maldives is the best way to see more islands in Maldives, you can visit local islands that are near by from your resort. At the local beach the guide showed us the destruction done during Tsunami, Muli Court, Mosque, Maldives bank, their education center, small souvenir shop, of course a beautiful untouched beach, Muli Police station, Hospital & sea Ambulance.
