This is a different type of episode than I usually do…it’s a visual tour of the beautiful Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico featuring all it’s highlights and the best things to do when you’re visiting the Yucatan Peninsula Mexico - including Merida, Puerto Progreso, Campeche, Izamal, Motul, Valladolid, Tulum and Cancun. Regardless of what you read or hear in Mexico Travel Advisories - this region is incredible safe. The people are warm and friendly and there is a large expat community that lives there - especially a lot of Canadians. There are direct flights from Toronto to Merida.
Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula is a stunning coastal region decorated with tropical beaches with white coral sand and turquoise blue waters, spectacular wildlife like iguanas, pelicans and pink flamingos, ancient Mayan ruins like Chichen Itza,, small villages, and outdoor adventure activities like cave diving, swimming in the cenotes, parasailing and more!
There are also pink waters found in the salt flats where you’ll find the pink flamingo’s natural habitat.
The colours of the Yucatan and vast covering all colours of the rainbow which you will see especially reflected in the homes and architecture of Merida and Campeche.
The rich Mayan culture is especially prevalent in the food. Some of the most complex and delicious food in the world is to be had in the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico. The cuisines are so rich and complex with flavours and colours it’s truly unique to this part of the world. Stemming from the wide range of tropical fruits, and local produce it combines local spices and ancient Mayan techniques as well as bizarre imported treasures such as Edam cheese from Holland, which is explained by the colourful history of the Mexican people of Yucatan.
Some of the must try dishes of the Yucatan peninsula include pibil and cochinita pibil, Papadzules, Pavo Relleno Negro which is turkey in a dark sauce made from charred chilies and spices, Poc Chuc, Queso Relleno, Salbutes, Sopa de Lima, Sopes just to name a few. The region is also known for their chocolate, merenge desserts and wide arrange of tropical fruits such as the mamey.
I spent 3 weeks in this place with the help of my local guide Eduardo Campos Martínez who has his Masters in Tourism and I had the pleasure of staying in his recently renovated home from the beginning of the XX Century known as the porfiriato period. This stunning 2 story multi room house is available for rent on Airbnb and it is in the centre of Merida in a lovely quiet area.
His contact info (don’t let his terrible instagram fool you):
In addition he offers experiences on Airbnb and will also customize a private tour for you and your group. I highly, highly recommend him as a guide for the region as without him I would not have had the depth of knowledge and experiences out of the region - he's incredibly passionate about what he does.

Yucatan
Yucatan is conveniently located with extremely easy access. Its strategic location places it 36 hours by sea and 1.5 hours by plane from the United States.
Its infrastructure is among the best found in Mexico, with a rapid, efficient and economic transportation and logistics systems to facilitate all operations. Transportation costs from Yucatan to the U.S. are 20% less when purchased in Mexico or from Central America to similar destinations.
The State of Yucatan is bordered on the north and west by the Gulf of Mexico, on the east with the State of Quintana Roo and on the west and southwest with the State of Campeche.
It is truly a privileged geographic position, with its position on the Gulf of Mexico allowing access to the coasts of the southern United States. In fact, the most important cities of Florida, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi are from 90 to 120 minutes flight from the international airport of Merida, capital of the State of Yucatan.
As for lodging, Merida offers multiple options according to the event: from modern to traditional hotels, henequen haciendas now converted into gran tourism class hotels, and beach hotels. Large congresses can find their place here, as well as conventions and expositions.
Merida is among the most secure and safest cities in all of Mexico, not to mention our special police division for tourists, assisting them all the time.
Merida
THE WHITE CITY
Capital of the state of Yucatan, Merida is known as the white city for its clean streets, houses and people, and it is an obligatory starting and finishing point for those visiting the state of Yucatan.
It was founded by the Spanish in 1542 on the remains of the ancient Mayan settlement of Ichcaanzihó, and was named by the conquistadores after the city of Merida in Spain.
The city was laid out according to Spanish traditions, and the sacred stones of the native temples were used to build houses and buildings for the conquistadores, as well as temples to the new Christian faith.
In Merida the old and the new, respect for inherited tradition and modern urban development blend with originality and grandeur. The traveller can find a whole range of possibilities walking the streets and visiting points of interest such as museums, parks, markets, malls and stores selling handcrafts and traditional clothing.
Merida is well known for its hospitality. Its population is one of the most friendly, kindness and warmth of Mexico.
Merida has all the tourist might require to complete his enjoyment of this beautiful Mexican provincial city.
Autumn weather in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula is hot, in general 86º -68º F ( 30º C ,20º C) , with occasional tropical rain showers. It is recommended you wear informal/casual work clothing, and comfortable walking shoes for the tours.
Most mayor credit cards are accepted in Mexico at all hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and stores. There are several banks and ATM close to the hotels.
A passport is required to enter the country as well as a tourist visa that will be issued at your city's Mexican Consulate or through the airline that you will be flying. Very few nationalities require a visa to enter Mexico.

Impressions of Motul de Carrillo Puerto, Yucatán
Motul de Carrillo Puerto or Motul in short is a quaint Yucatecan town about 45 KM east of Mérida. The city, especially the well-conserved city center, is a popular destination for tourists and local day-trippers. They all enjoy the “huevos motuleños” a delicious dish Motul gained national acquaintance for. If you want to go and eat in the center at the weekends, make sure you are on time. Usually, it gets very crowded.
Its proximity to Mérida as well as the attractive beaches of Telchac Puerto and San Crisanto makes Motul the ideal place to live for everybody who is seeking to live in an original, peaceful, and picturesque Yucatecan environment with good access to the beach and the big city of Mérida. In order to reach Merida, you don’t even need a car. The bus and taxi connections are excellent and cheap.
