We drove to beautiful Abbaye de Fontenay in Bourgogne. Founded in 1118, the Abbaye was the first place in Europe to harness the power of moving water.

While in our house in France we like to walk and explore the place. This time we take you to Saulieu, a lovely French town with lots of history, in the middle of the Morvan National Park in Burgundy.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abbaye de Fontenay
We visit the exquisite UNESCO World Heritage Site of Abbaye de Fontenay. Founded by St-Bernard in 1119, it is described by UNESCO as being “an excellent illustration of the ideal of self-sufficiency as practiced by the earliest communities of Cistercian monks”.
Having been ravaged and abandoned during the French Revolution, and later serving time as a paper factory, the Abbey has been so carefully restored that it is now the most complete remaining medieval monastery in France. As a testimony to the monastery’s desire to be self-sufficient, the complex includes cloisters, dormitories, outbuildings, fish ponds, bakery, mill, forge and even a prison.

- Abbaye de Fontenay - The exquisite World Heritage UNESCO site founded by St Bernard in 1118. The Abbey at Fontenay was founded in 1118 by St- Bernard. Situated at the bottom of a remote valley, this large Cistercian monastery near Montbard is noteworthy for its rather simple, austere style and its no-frills architecture.

L'Abbaye de Fontevraud est située en région Pays de la Loire. Considérée comme l’une des plus grandes cités monastiques d’Europe, nécropole royale des Plantagenêt, l’Abbaye de Fontevraud frappe autant par sa taille que par son originalité. Transformée en prison par Napoléon en 1804, elle est sauvée de la destruction et devient une centrale pénitentiaire redoutée. Les derniers prisonniers ne la quitteront qu’en 1985. Joyau au cœur du Val de Loire, Fontevraud est aujourd’hui un patrimoine historique vivant, un laboratoire d’idées et de créativité.

Les ponts sur l'Armançon, le donjon, la collégiale Notre Dame, la promenade autour des remparts avec sa vue imprenable sur les alentours, les maisons à pans de bois, les rives aménagées de l'Armançon, et une vue imprenable sur l'ensemble de la ville depuis les ponts, constituent autant de points de vue à ne manquer sous aucun prétexte.

Before our visit to Abbaye de Fontenay, we made a quick stop at the very lovely canal de Bourgogne. On our way to Vezelay, we passed through Semur-en-Auxois and took pictures from the famed vantage point.
