10 Million Fruit Bats Descend on Kasanka

Once a year between October and December, the arrival of about 10 million fruit bats takes place in Kasanka National Park in northern Zambia after having migrated for thousands of kilometres. This incredible spectacle is known as the world's largest aerial mammal migration. It is also the world's biggest overall migration as it involves more individuals than the famous wildebeest migration across the Serengeti in Tanzania and Masai Mara in Kenya.

Kasanka is a small and rugged park. The fruit bats emerge at dusk - you can watch and hear them flying overhead from simple elevated platforms. The spend the night feeding, returning to their roosts at dawn to spend the day sleeping. This is another wonderful time to watch them, especially as the sun rises over another beautiful day in Zambia.

Africa Road-trip, Zambia Combined Episodes 96-99 sd

South Luangwa National Park is wildlife heaven. Lusaka police are hell. And Victoria Falls is impressive. This a small part of our road trip across Southern Africa. A trip from Tanzania and the Indian Ocean to the Atlantic off the coast of Namibia.

South Luangwa National Park Part 1 Video Details

At the park gate we pay our fees and were free to explore. Where one finds fresh elephant poo one can expect to find elephants and we did. We even found grandpa elephant walking along the side of the road. But it seemed he didn’t like us. He gave us the usual elephant warning when we drove too close.

We spent the entire day driving around and watching the exotic African animals and while we watch the animals a Hyena was watched us. We spent the day doing more animal watching. Lots of giraffes, hippos, wilder beast, buffalos and a few evasive elephants. As it grew dark we make it back to our camp.

Early the next morning we returned to the park to continue our independent game driving experience.

Soon Ben decided to follow a very large elephant at one point. It didn’t seem pleased. However, Ben was insistent. But insistence is not always a good thing, especially in sticky mud. Fortunately he had me to get out and push. I was glad that the park ranger had specifically warned us not to get out of the vehicle.

Once again, we game watch until sunset and then head back to our camp.

South Luangwa National Park Part 2 Video Details

After spending two days in South Luangwa National Park watching incredible and varied wild game we said bye-bye to Croc Valley Camp.

When Ben got tired of driving he would stop and do minor maintenance. And after off road 4WDing it was necessary to increase air pressure in the tires. When was the last time you used a hand pump to put air in tires?

That night we decide to camp at another high-end lodge with $10 camping. Carrying a tent is the smart way to travel Africa on a shoestring.

Lusaka Police Chase Video Details

The next day we headed for Lusaka. But the big city has its price. We got pulled over by a policewoman in a private car that wanted us to follow her to the police station. She insisted that we had failed to make a turn in a turning lane. Ben argued that the turning arrow painted on the pavement was practically invisible (and it was). He even tried the old trick of offering used clothing gifts. But this woman was determined. She wanted us to follow her friend’s car to the police station.

So we agree to follow her car to the station reluctantly. So at the first intersection we turned off when she went straight. We then spend a few hours hiding in a shopping mall and restocking. Late in the day we felt it safe to sneak out of town but at the busy local market we passed her on a street corner. We were easy to spot. An old Land Cruiser with German tags and two pale (white) guys. She tried to flag us down and blew her whistle. In a panic Ben turned down the first side street. Unfortunately it was a pedestrian walkway though the local market. The chase was on again. We were surrounded by people staring at us, as we inched our way along, blowing the horn. Eventually we exited the market.

Once out of town we hauled ass until the sun started to set. Late in the day we pulled off the road and camped in an open field. Hopefully out of sight and out of mind.

We broke camp early the next day and started the next leg of the drive to reach Victoria Falls. Near the falls we settled on a luxury resort on the riverbank. Price for camping was the standard $10 pp.

On a plateau in southern Zambia, Lusaka is located at a height of roughly 1250 meters. The city, which has its own district, shares boundaries with Chibombo in the Central Province to the north, Kafue to the south, Chilanga to the west, and the Chongwe District to the east.
Since the Middle Tertiary, the area surrounding Lusaka has been a part of Central Africa's vast lowlands. The quartzite hills in northern Lusaka, which have flat tops, are the remains of a plateau that developed morphologically during the Cretaceous epoch.

The scenery to the Dar es Salaam station at the end of the line - TAZARA Railway [Vol.25] ZAMBIA

I lived in Tanzania for three years, and the scenery to Dar es Salaam station, the end of the Tazara railroad line, is wonderful.
And this is the end of the long, long journey on the Tazara Railway.
There were many happenings, but it was very interesting, just like traveling.
Please refer to the following page for a record of our trip.

🔸Translator🔸
Outward: Mbeya Station in Tanzania to New Kapiri Mposhi Station in Zambia
Return trip from Mkushi station in Zambia to Dar es Salaam station in Tanzania

🔹Mbeya Station
Do not wait just because no one is boarding. The station staff will not come to call you, and others are waiting for another train.
I was almost left behind.

🔹Tunduma station
Do not close the door of the first class room. We had to go through the departure formalities because of the border crossing, but they did not open the door for us.
When we went through immigration procedures at Nakonde station on the Zambian side, there was no departure stamp, so we took a cab back to the Tanzanian side and went through immigration procedures. It was a painful memory that I had to go back to Zambia and go through the immigration procedure again.

🔹New Kapiri Mposhi station
Do not trust the timetable. The timetable on the Tanzanian side has been changed, so I assume the timetable has been changed on the Zambian side as well, but the Zambian side is the same as before.
I remember taking a cab from Mkushi station.

🔹Tazara Railway
Don't trust trains. A former JR train employee said, It's a wonder there is a train running that shakes up and down and even side to side like that.
The train was so shaky that it was uncoupled, but it is a scary memory to think that it would have derailed if it had taken a wrong step.

🔹Others
I heard that there are thieves on the train, and that while the train is stopped, some people leave things by the windows, or break in and steal luggage.
I would not recommend this trip to beginners because of the many nights spent on the train.

Despite all the happenings (no thieves, etc.), all I can say is it was fun.
These were taken in 2016 and I will continue to publish the record of the trip in videos, but I don't think I have ever had more fun than this trip....
