A few hours later than expected, we arrived in Windy City - 2 out of 4 runways were not open due to, guess what: WIND - gusts reaching more than 50 mph led to a delay of almost three hours plus an additional hour of waiting for our Ford Mustang convertible at the rental station.
After a healthy deep-dish pizza, we officially started our Route 66 trip - and took the first short stage south.
Only 100 miles / 180 km today, giving us some time for a great night with live music in Joliet ...

2021-10-24: Super-Late-Night (Early-Morning) Drive through Plainfield and Joliet at 2:30 AM
In this trip, we will explore what it is like to drive through the Joliet-Plainfield area on a major artery at 2:30 AM. Spoiler alert: there were very few people on the road, so we are mostly on our own for this trip. This also means the trip was very hassle-free. That means all you need to do is relax and take in the nighttime scenery and quietness of the area during this early-morning trip!
1:50 - Leave Plainfield High School - Central Campus parking lot; turn onto Fort Beggs Drive
2:23 - Turn onto IL-59 South
3:16 - Turn onto Renwick Road
4:44 - Turn onto US 30 East - although it may have been slightly quicker to continue on Renwick, this route was far safer for this time of night since it has much better lighting (or any lighting at all, for that matter)
6:50 - Cross under I-55
7:50 - Leave US 30 East; continue on local roads
Route 66 TOP 10 Spots - Sights On The Iconic Road Trip From Chicago To LA
The iconic Route 66 from Chicago to LA, these are our Top Ten Spots on Route 66. There are so many interesting places to stop and explore on this drive it was hard to pick 10.
Some are small roadside attractions, some are national parks and some are towns but for various reasons, they all struck a chord with us. This was our first trip along Route 66, through 8 states but it definitely won’t be our last. Next time we intend to drive it from LA back to Chicago.
We spent 3 weeks exploring the Mother Road and still only scratched the surface of all the attractions, trading posts, museums and towns along the 2448 miles.
One of the best things along the road were the people we meant from the fellow Route 66 travellers to the people and business owners.

2021-10-13: Big Loop around Minooka, Joliet, and Plainfield
It's time for another big loop! Today, we will circle around the area, starting at Plainfield South High School in Joliet, IL, then head south to Minooka, drive through downtown and past Minooka Community Central High School, before using I-80 to get to the other side of Joliet and visit Joliet Township Central High School, and finally take US 30 back into downtown Plainfield, where we will end at Plainfield Central High School.
1:36 - Turn onto Ridge Road from the Plainfield South High School parking lot
7:13 - Cross US 52
12:48 - Cross under I-80
15:50 - Turn onto McEvilly Road
16:15 - Minooka Community Central High School is visible on the left
16:56 - Turn onto South Wabena Avenue
18:05 - Turn onto West Mondamin Street
19:31 - Turn onto Ridge Road
21:23 - Merge onto I-80 East
25:37 - Cross I-55
31:00 - Begin construction, begin work zone speed limit (55 MPH) begin traffic jam
33:47 - Des Plaines River Bridge - advisory speed limit 45 MPH
34:35 - Work zone speed limit decreases to 45 MPH; Personal mistake - had to merge back into traffic from exit lane because I thought my exit was next when it was actually the one after that
35:10 - Exit to northbound Chicago Street (US 52/IL-53) - the previous week before this video was recorded, a giant pothole (which we call a crater) was discovered at this position on the expressway near this exit. It was so deep that you could see the metal crossbeams below the pavement, and over 20 vehicles were lined up on the shoulder, all disabled with flat tires after running over it! Needless to say, IDOT got out there right away to fill it.
