Places to see in ( Mildenhall - UK )

Places to see in ( Mildenhall - UK )

Mildenhall is a small market town and civil parish in Suffolk, England. It is part of the non-metropolitan district of Forest Heath and has a population of 9,906 people, increasing to 10,315 at the 2011 Census. The town is near the A11 and is located 60 km (37 mi) north-west of county town, Ipswich.

Mildenhall centres on a market place with a 16th-century hexagonal market cross and town pump. The town's market is held here on every Friday and originated as a weekly chartered market in, it is believed, the 15th century. In 1934, Mildenhall was the start point of the MacRobertson Air Race to Melbourne, Australia. Mildenhall has its own radio station, ZACK FM (Forest Heath Public Radio), broadcasting on 105.3 FM; the transmitter is located at the top of St Mary's Church and radiates 100 W. The station format is classic and current hits plus specialist shows, and broadcasts 24 hours a day with a mix of music, news and information Mildenhall is mentioned in passing in the Pink Floyd song 'Let There Be More Light' on the 1968 album A Saucerful of Secrets as a speculated location for first contact between humanity and extraterrestrial life.

The town has a bus station which was completed in 2005. Regular bus services run to the neighbouring towns of Brandon, Bury St. Edmunds, Newmarket and Thetford. National Express operate daily coach services to Norwich, London (Victoria Coach Station), Heathrow, Gatwick and Stansted Airports. Mildenhall railway station was the terminus of the Cambridge to Mildenhall railway until its closure in 1962.

Mildenhall has a Non-League football club [Mildenhall Town F.C.] who play at Recreation Way. It also has one of the region's leading cricket clubs, Mildenhall Cricket Club, playing at Wamil Way. In 2016 the 1XI won the Two Counties Championship and was promoted to the East Anglian Premier Cricket League. Notable players have included England international Tymal Mills, England Lions' Tom Westley and Essex Women's Lilly Reynolds. There is a leisure centre on Bury Road which is about 5–10 minutes away from the town square.

Mildenhall is perhaps most famous for the discovery in 1942 of the Mildenhall Treasure. Now at the British Museum, the treasure is a hoard of Roman silver objects buried in the 4th century. In 1946 the discovery was made public and the treasure acquired by the British Museum; Roald Dahl wrote an article about the find which was published firstly in the Saturday Evening Post, and later as The Mildenhall Treasure (a short story) in his short story collection The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More.

10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Summer 2020 Barton Mills Town Video Tour [Suffolk, England] American Abby Presents: Barton Mills

The tiny town of Barton Mills!
One of the close options for living off base if you are stationed at RAF Mildenhall or RAF Lakenheath is this little gem of a town on the River Lark. It's full of old buildings, beautiful history, forest walking trails, and surrounding by rolling farm field. Definitely worth a trip and it's close enough to walk to the city of Mildenhall and it's a very short drive to RAF Mildenhall or Lakenheath.

Mildenhall Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Suffolk, and around 20 miles northeast of Cambridge, is the town of Mildenhall.

Geographically, Mildenhall is situated along the River Lark - a tributary of the River Great Ouse. An archaeological find from 1942, known as The Mildenhall Treasure, hints at a significant Roman presence in the area during the 4th century AD.

At the heart of the town is St Mary's Church. This dates back to the 13th century or possibly earlier, with additions up to the 15th century. The church is Grade I listed.

In 1412 a royal charter was granted to Mildenhall by Henry IV, giving it the right to a weekly market and an annual fair. The town's distinctive hexagonal market cross dates back to the 15th century, and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument.

In 1885 a railway station opened in Mildenhall. This was the northeastern terminus of the Cambridge to Mildenhall Railway. The station closed to passengers in 1962, and to freight in 1964. Today, public transport to Mildenhall consists of direct buses from Newmarket, Bury St Edmunds, Brandon and various other nearby settlements.

In 1934 RAF Mildenhall opened. Despite its status as a Royal Air Force station, it is home to the 100th Air Refueling Wing - part of the United States Air Force. Additionally, RAF Lakenheath, built in 1940, is situated around four miles north of the town, and is home to the 48th Fighter Wing - also part of the United States Air Force. As such, Mildenhall currently has the highest concentration of U.S. citizens in the country, estimated to comprise about 30% of the town's population.

Mildenhall || A Posh English Village - English Countryside 4K WALK

Mildenhall is said to be one of the poshest, quaint villages in Wiltshire.

Mildenhall (Minal) is a village and civil parish in the Kennet Valley in Wiltshire, England, immediately east of the market town of Marlborough.

The earliest record comes from Saxon times. The village of Mildenhall although spelt this way had been pronounced Minal by the local residents for centuries. The Domesday Survey of 1086 gave the name Mildenhalle but in 1282 the Charter Rolls called it Mildehale. About 1760, it can be seen that a new form, that of Minal, was being used. There is another village in Britian called Mildenhall, based in East Anglia.

The Church here dates back to 804AD.

The Horseshoe pub has a long history as a family-run village pub and alehouse.
