Maua is the headquarters of Igembe South Sub-County and in the former Constitution, dispensation hosted a municipal council’(Under the new Constitution, the country was divided into 47 counties and Maua is but a town. Maua municipality has a population of 50,826, of whom 13,763 are classified as urban
Maua is one of the economically viable towns in Meru County. Ikweta Country Inn and Conference Centre, Soldat Teachers College, and Methodists Nursing School are among the landmarks in Maua.
Maua town is the center of the Khat trade in Kenya and the world. Income from khat exports to Europe was sharply cut when the UK declared the stimulant a class C drug and banned all imports in June 2014. Unusual for a town its size Maua has a wide mix of ethnicities, with Ameru, Somali, Kikuyu, and Luo among the dominant residents. Places near Maua are Meru, Isiolo, and Kathwana

Khat or qat (Amharic: ጫት ch’at; Oromo: Jimaa, Somali: qaad, khaad or khat, Arabic: القات al-qāt) is a flowering plant native to the East and West Hararghe zones of Ethiopia. Khat contains the alkaloid cathinone, a stimulant, which is said to cause excitement, loss of appetite, and euphoria. Among communities from the areas where the plant is native, khat chewing has a history as a social custom dating back thousands of years analogous to the use of coca leaves in South America and betel nut in Asia.
The khat plant is known by a variety of names, such as qat and gat in Yemen, qaat and jaad in Somalia, and chat in Ethiopia. It is also known as jimaa in the Oromo language, mayirungi in Luganda, and as miraa in Kenya. In the African Great Lakes region, where Catha edulis is in some areas cultivated, it is known as miraa, muhulo and muirungi
The World Health Organization (WHO) classified it in 1980 as a drug of abuse that can produce psychic dependence,[3] although the WHO does not consider khat addiction to be a serious problem
Khat has been grown for use as a stimulant for centuries in the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. There, chewing khat predates the use of coffee and is used in a similar social context. Its fresh leaves and tops are chewed or, less frequently, dried and consumed as tea, to achieve a state of euphoria and stimulation. The leaves or the soft part of the stem can be chewed with either chewing gum or fried peanuts to make it easier to chew.
In Uganda, it is grown in the central region, especially in Kasenge (Wakiso), Butambala District, Mabira Forest, and in some parts of the western region of the country.[2] In Kenya, it is grown in Meru County.

Most developed towns in Kenya are the development hubs in which the country’s future growth may base on. The Kenyan government should look into more ways to ensure that even as this development continues, it is managed to ensure that they do not end up with bad plans. In current cities like Nairobi, Mombasa and Kisumu the rate of growth in the settlement did not grow at the same rate with facilities hence leading to problems such as overpopulation, poor housing and slum development, flooding, increased crime etc.

Is Meru National Park the Most Secretive Park in Kenya?

Meru National Park covers 1800km2 and is the core of an ecosystem that includes Kora, Bisandi, Kitui and Rahole National Reserves, an additional 5000+km2 of pure wilderness. It is a lot less busy than some of Kenya’s more popular parks and has an unspoilt feel.

The Park was made famous in the 1960s by Joy and George Adamson, who reintroduced their beloved lioness “Elsa” into the wild at the Park. They wrote a book about their experience which was made into a feature film “Born Free”.

Meru National Park is particularly scenic. The Tana River on its southern boundary is the largest waterway in Kenya, and there are several small streams that run through the park. Beautiful doum palms and baobab trees are silhouetted against the sky, and the red soil makes a striking background for arid-adapted animals.

The Park also offers good overall wildlife viewing and is home to the Big 5. Elephants are particularly common. Big cat sightings are hit-and-miss. There is a 100+ strong herd of white and black rhinos in the drive-in Rhino Sanctuary, although the vegetation is extremely thick. Hippos and Nile crocodiles are common along the Tana River.

It covers a total area of 7,006 Km2 out of which part of it 972.3Km2 is gazetted as forest.
It has a population of 1.55 million people. Meru County is the home of the Ngaa people (Meru), who are related to other ethnicities living around the Mount Kenya region: the Kikuyu, Embu people and to some extent the Kamba people Also, peoples from the east coast of Kenya, along the Indian Ocean, like the Bajuni, Swahili, Mijikenda, and further inland, the Taita, Taveta and westwards to the Lake Victoria coast, the Kisii and Maragoli as well as other Luhya people, are all related to the Meru.

Chuka is a town on the eastern slopes of Mount Kenya, in Kenya about 65 km south Of Meru Town. It falls within Tharaka-Nithi County and the former Eastern Province. Between 1992 and 2009, Chuka was the capital of Tharaka Nithi District (split off from Meru District). Tharaka Nithi District was further split into Meru South and Tharaka Districts with Chuka remaining the Capital of Meru South. Later, Meru South and Tharaka were amalgamated into Tharaka-Nithi County.
Chuka Town is chiefly occupied by the Chuka people, one of the nine Meru dialect Speakers. They dwell on the south-eastern slopes of Mt. Kenya, and cover the area between the Thuci River in the south, and the Nithi River in the north. It is a common tradition with the Chuka that they have always been in the forests of Mt. Kenya hence they moved down to their present abode. Other versions of the Chuka migratory tradition say that they came out from Mbwa with the other Meru.
The Chuka are believed to have sprung from the Tharaka, another of the meru subtribes. They have also a form of blood-brotherhood with the Igembe and the Tigania of the northern meru dialects. The Chuka are primarily Meru who, having climbed the first slopes of Mt. Kenya, clearing the forest for cultivation (even at present the fields of the Chuka are on the lower section of their country), mixed with the aboriginal inhabitants of the forest and established some kind of contact with the Embu. These aboriginal forest inhabitants seem to have been the Gumba, now only remembered by some traditions and described as very small people. It seems certain that they were a pygmy race.
Colleges have recently blossomed in Chuka and its vicinity with Chuka University being the major.new development, headed by Prof. Njoka. W

The county consists of three constituencies: Maara, Chuka/Igambang'ombe, Tharaka.
In 1992 Meru District, sometimes called Greater Meru was broken up into four pieces, Meru Central, Meru North, Meru South and Tharaka; with Meru South (also known as Nithi District) combined with Tharaka into a new Tharaka-Nithi District. In 1998, the Tharaka Nithi District was split into two districts, Nithi and Tharaka, but the Kenya Supreme Court decision of 2009 declared that split unconstitutional. Subsequently, under the revised constitution of 2010, Tharaka-Nithi became a county
