A Town That Has Started To Fade: Mattoon, Illinois 4K.
Mattoon has been slowly declining in population since 1970. Mattoon isn't a bad city by any means, but it follows the trend of rural Illinois towns struggling to attract new jobs. The city has a drug problem, but the crime rates in Mattoon are not as bad as other drug infested rural towns. Mattoon has potential to turn things around economically, as it's home to the headquarters of a major retail chain and is located only 10 miles west of a city of similar size in Charleston.

So where exactly do Amtrak trains go in the United States? This video is an in-depth look at where Amtrak can take you, and how you can use Amtrak and its connecting services to get around America.
To get around America and travel between the cities on this map, sometimes it’s a single ride on one train and sometimes it isn’t. Most importantly, there’s no coast-to-coast service. So if you want to travel from, say, New York to Los Angeles, you’ll have to transfer. Most transfers between the east and the west part of the country are done in Chicago, which is a major Amtrak hub. You can also transfer in New Orleans.
The best way to figure out exactly how to get from place to place on Amtrak is to let them decide. When you buy tickets on the Amtrak website, you just put in your starting and ending points and it will give you whatever options there are. Often there aren’t really as many options as you’d think, assuming you want as few transfers as possible. For example, despite all the Amtrak lines in the northeast, there’s only one direct route between Boston and Chicago, and only two between New York and Chicago.
Speaking of the northeast, this is arguably the best-served area of the United States. Compared to other parts of the country, quite a few shorter and more specialized routes exist here. So you can take the Keystone Service between New York and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania; or the Pennsylvanian between New York and Pittsburgh. The Downeaster goes between Boston and Brunswick, Maine. From New York, the Adirondack and Maple Leaf take you to Montreal and Toronto, respectively. So, if you’re traveling around the northeast on Amtrak, you’re fairly well covered.
What if you want to go from Washington DC to Denver? In this case you’ll need two trains, either the Cardinal or the Capitol Limited to Chicago, and then the California Zephyr to Denver.
Now, while there are a lot of major and some not-so-major cities on this map, and thus ways to travel between them on Amtrak, there are obviously some gaps. We already saw how Amtrak doesn’t even enter Wyoming or South Dakota at all, and other states like New Hampshire, Tennessee, and Delaware just barely. And what about major destinations Amtrak *does* go, like Atlanta? Only one route passes through Atlanta, the Crescent. That means there’s no easy way to get between Atlanta and… Chicago, or Florida, or Nashville. New Orleans and Washington DC, those are pretty much your only options from Atlanta. In fact Amtrak doesn’t go anywhere near Nashville. Nor does it go to Phoenix, or Las Vegas, or Boise or Twin Falls, or Augusta Maine. And on and on.
The good news is that Amtrak partners with various transportation services, usually buses, around the country to provide access to many more destinations. This map, which is on the Amtrak website, shows these connecting routes in green. Amtrak calls them Thruway services. This is how you can fill in a lot of the gaps in Amtrak’s main train routes, and get to Las Vegas, or to Phoenix, or Montgomery Alabama, or Sarasota, or Nashville, or way up through Wisconsin and Michigan. This is how you explore more of Oregon and Colorado, and Kentucky and Ohio… and yes, how you can use Amtrak to move around the great state of Wyoming.
See you on the rails!

27 Mattoon St, Springfield, MA 01105 | Quadrangle–Mattoon Street Historic District
Urban sensibilities meet Western Massachusetts calm in this circa 1872 brick row house at 27 Mattoon Street, in the heart of Springfield's Quadrangle–Mattoon Street Historic District. Lined with herringbone brick sidewalks, London Plane trees, and cast iron street lights, Mattoon Street is a historic district unlike any other in the region, evoking scenes of Boston's Beacon Hill and Back Bay neighborhoods—it is the only street in Springfield to feature Victorian row houses on both sides of the street.
Homes date in the 1870s and 1880s. This home (and the others at numbers 27-35) are bowed four-story townhouses inspired by the swelled front townhouses of Boston's Beacon Hill. This home features a kitchen and dining level below the street, an elaborate brownstone and hardwood staircase, and marble and brick fireplaces. With three bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms, and more than 3,000 square feet of living space, this home has been lovingly cared for over 150+ years. Updated bathrooms, a fourth-floor primary suite, back patio, and designated parking spot make this home a luxurious find in Springfield's bustling downtown.
One street over, find the Springfield Museums, including the Amazing World of Dr. Seuss Museum—and nearby, enjoy the Worthington Street Dining District, attend national conference, music, sports, comedy, and entertainment events at the MassMutual Center and MGM Springfield, and visit the Springfield Symphony Orchestra for a night of classical music. Within a short drive, you have all that Western Massachusetts has to offer, including entertainment, hiking, and educational experiences at every turn!
This home has it all and is among it all.

Driving Around Small Town Mattoon, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Friday, June 16 2023, I drive around the village Mattoon, IL to see what's going on.
Mattoon is named for William Mattoon, who helped construct the Terre Haute Alton Railroad. The reason for the honor is unclear; some say he won the naming rights because his rail crew arrived first. Others say he beat other claimants in a card game, or that residents hoped the wealthy Mattoon would invest in the town if they named it after him.
In 1826, Charles Sawyer of Kentucky became the first white man known to settle in the Mattoon area. Prior to that, the area was occupied by multiple Native American tribes. Mounds are present in the surrounding area.
The 1850s saw a flurry of activity for the emerging town. In 1855, the first houses were built. Benjamin Turney used 16 yoke of oxen to drag his home from a farm three miles away, while R. H. McFadden built his home near the area of present-day First Street and Prairie Avenue.
On June 9, 1855, the first train arrived on the Terre Haute Alton Railroad.
The next year, 1856, saw the creation of the first newspaper. The weekly Independent Gazette published four page, seven-column editions.
In May 1857, residents voted to incorporate the town, with 65 votes for and 25 votes against. Also in 1857, ordinances passed forbidding drunkenness, working on Sunday, disturbing public or religious meetings, gaming, leaving carcasses on the streets, littering, obstructing sidewalks, and driving fast horses.
On the night before the fourth Lincoln-Douglas debate of September 18, 1858, at the Coles County Fairgrounds, both Abraham Lincoln and Stephen A. Douglas slept in nearby Mattoon.
In 1865, Amish settlers began a community to the north near Arthur. Amish farm stands and horse-drawn buggies are not uncommon sights in Mattoon today.
In the 1890s, Mattoon led the successful campaign to have a proposed college in eastern Illinois located in Coles County. The citizens were chagrined when neighboring Charleston was chosen as the home of the future Eastern Illinois University instead.
The 1940 discovery of petroleum reserves near Mattoon led to a small oil boom over the next two decades, bringing with it economic benefits and increased civic pride. Oil extraction continues to be an important economic activity.
The Burger King — unrelated to the Florida-based fast food chain Burger King — is a Mattoon restaurant whose owners claim it is the original Burger King. In 1968, they sued the national chain Burger King, producing a well-known case in United States trademark law.
The federal 7th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that federal trademark registration has priority over state law, giving the national Burger King chain rights to the name beyond a 20-mile radius around the original Burger King.
Mattoon has a thriving junior baseball league and has hosted many junior league regionals and World Series.
The 1986 arrival of the Lender's Bagels factory led Mattoon to dub itself the Bagel Capital of the World. Today, Bimbo Bakeries operates the Mattoon bagel factory.
Mattoon is home to Rural King, a large retailer of agricultural supplies.
As of the 2020 census there were 16,870 people residing in the city.
The racial makeup of the city was 89.25% White, 3.25% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.66% Asian, 1.03% from other races, and 5.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.05% of the population.
The median income for a household in the city was $40,576, and the per capita income for the city was $24,615. About 22.0% of the population were below the poverty line.
