Montpellier, France
Montpellier is a city in southern France, 10km inland from the coast of the Mediterranean Sea. The town's stately Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Pierre, distinguished by conical towers, dates to 1364. Montpellier was a wealthy city from the 12th to the 14th centuries. This is because trade such as wool and spices was active through the port. The oldest existing building was built in the 12th century. After the war of religion in the 17th century, new bourgeois and government officials such as lawyers and high-ranking officials in the stock market flocked to enjoy a second heyday. For about two centuries, they spent huge sums of money building luxurious, privately owned mansions and developing the city. Even in the eyes of travelers, Montpellier is attractive enough. Montpellier resembles Paris. The opera house, the Arc de Triomphe, and the Champs Elysées are everywhere in the city, full of traces of efforts to resemble Paris. That's why Montpellier is called 'Little Paris'.
The heart of Montpellier starts at Place de la Comédie. In the middle of the square built in 1755, there is a fountain decorated with statues of three women, and there is also a splendid opera house resembling that of Paris. Because the square is oval, it is also called ‘egg square’. As it is a transportation hub with several lines of the Montpellier tram going through and a 5-minute walk from the train station, it is known as a meeting place for citizens. If you start early in the morning at Place de la Comédie, you can visit the Arc de Triomphe, the Royal Square of Peyroux, and the Cathedral in half a day. If you go all the way northwest from Place de la Comédie , you will find a maze of small alleyways. It is a small cafe tucked away in an alleyway, and it is also fun to find restaurants, galleries, and boutique clothing rooms. It was not wrong to feel like going back to the Middle Ages. This is because luxurious mansions built by bourgeois in the 17th century are also gathered in this area.

Aigues-Mortes Travel Guide
Travel video about destination Aigues-Mortes in France.
One of the most well preserved mediaeval fortifications in Europe surrounds the small town of Aigues-Mortes along the western periphery of the Camargue in the south of France. In the 13th century King Louis The Ninth was in search of a suitable location for a harbour on the Mediterranean that would serve both trade and military purposes. The Aigues-Mortes region was far from ideal as it was a swampland on which it was almost impossible to build, however, the orders of the King had to be obeyed! The seventeen hundred metre long town wall consists of ten gates and five defensive towers, a true masterpiece of mediaeval architecture. King Louis The Ninth and his army embarked from Aigues-Mortes to conquer the Holy Land for Christianity and in 1246, two years before the king's crusade to Egypt, the town's inhabitants began to prepare the machinery of war for this great adventure. However, the crusade was unsuccessful, the king having been taken prisoner. Even so, this was not to be his final military expedition and following his liberation and return to France he was encouraged to mount a new crusade in 1270, one which he did not survive. The harbour also suffered a terrible fate: it silted up! Thus the town's inhabitants experienced a difficult period in their history. But thanks to its splendid town wall Aigues-Mortes still manages to capture the atmosphere of the Middle Ages.

Places to see in ( La Grande Motte - France )
La Grande-Motte is a commune in the Hérault département in Occitanie in southern France. It is a popular seaside resort and port, built in the 1960s and 1970s. La Grande-Motte is characterized by homogeneous architecture; many of the prominent buildings are pyramidal in form. With 2 million tourists per year it is one of the favorite resorts of the French.
The resort town of La Grande Motte was largely built between 1960 and 1975 on virgin beachfront dunes, and is artificially irrigated to create a green, environment. The architect of the project, Jean Balladur, drew inspiration from pre-Columbian pyramids such as Teotihuacan, Mexico; and from modernist architecture in Brazil, especially the work of architect Oscar Niemeyer. Balladur developed the master plan for the seaside resort on a site of 750 hectares comprising 450 hectares of land and 300 hectares of wetland. The plan included principles for settlement, with guidelines for each plot, including zones for camping, a town centre, a marina, and a city park. The landscaper Pierre Pillet collaborated on the project, selecting plant species that were tolerant of the marine climate. Jean Balladur imagined a green city.
Parking was placed no more than 600 meters away from the beach, to allow visitors to walk there, but keeping all development away from the beach itself. The project incorporated large open spaces surrounding the main buildings. Squares and parks, and sports and leisure services were also planned for the new city. Public and private beaches, the marina and water sports facilities complement the design. The Palais de Congrès (conference centre), a casino and the church of St. Augustine are also key elements.
Established in 1967, the seaside resort of La Grande-Motte boasts a typical modern architecture of this period with its pyramid-shaped buildings. Lined with beautiful beaches of fine sand, the resort also offers to holidaymakers numerous leisure and sports activities.

Places to see in ( Aigues Mortes - France ) Salin d'Aigues Mortes
The Salins d'Aigues-Mortes is one of the 6 establishments of the company Salins du Midi, and the historic headquarters of this company. Located in the town of Aigues-Mortes , in the Camargue , in the Gard department , the salt marshes cover a large part of the Peccais marshes , to the south-east of the fortified village. They are accessible by the departmental road 46, southeast of Aigues-Mortes.
The exploitation of salt in Aigues-Mortes is an economic activity that goes back to ancient times . The first saline activity is attributed to a Roman engineer, Peccius , who left his name to the marsh of Peccais . During the Middle Ages , while the village of Aigues-Mortes is strongly influenced by the nearby Psalmodie Abbey , the economy is mainly focused on fishing and salt. During the reign of Louis IX , while the abbey passes under its domination, part of the marshes are sanitized, to facilitate the activity and trade of the region. Local development is continued under the reign ofPhilip III, said the Bold and Philip IV the Fair said , and sees the creation of the ramparts of Aigues-Mortes.
It is in 1856 that the Salins of Aigues-Mortes are constituted by company, by the regrouping of the owners, to become the company Renouard et Cie . In 1868 , the company changed its name. Compagnie des Salins du Midi then set up its headquarters in Montpellier. Salinas have been included in the general inventory of cultural heritage since 22 December 1995 , both for the production site and for administrative and housing buildings.
Aigues-Mortes saline production is a classic sea salt production, located along the Mediterranean coast, on a totally flat soil. The maximum activity is in summer, in order to benefit from optimal sunshine, for evaporation of water and crystallization of salt under the combined action of sun and wind. The operation of the salt is done, in stages, in five types of consecutive basins, interconnected by a circulation of water. The first basins, the parts , collect pumped seawater (salinity rate of about 38 g per liter) . The basins are, indeed, located a few meters above sea level, and the absence of important tides in the Mediterranean forces the use of pumps. The water then flows from basins to basins, its salinity increasing as and when. This circuit, with a length of several kilometers, causing the brine water to the basins reserve.
The salt tables (or crystallizers) , last basins, allowing the harvest of salt, are less deep than the previous ones. The salinity level then reaches 260 g of salt per liter of water. This is the most striking part of the production: on the one hand, by the color of the basins, due to the presence of microscopic algae in the water, Dunaliella salina ; on the other hand the mode of salt extraction. Once the water is drained, a layer of 8 to 15 centimeters of salt, the salt cake covers the bottom of the basins. Formerly harvested manually, by the salt workers (or salt workers )salt is collected mechanically by crawler tractors with shovels in the front. The salt thus harvested is stored in the form of mounds of 10 to 15 meters , the camels.

Provence (source Wikipedia):
Provence is a geographical region and historical province of southeastern France, which extends from the left bank of the lower Rhône to the west to the Italian border to the east; it is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea to the south. It largely corresponds with the modern administrative region of Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur and includes the departments of Var, Bouches-du-Rhône, Alpes-de-Haute-Provence, as well as parts of Alpes-Maritimes and Vaucluse. The largest city of the region and its modern-day capital is Marseille.
The Romans made the region the first Roman province beyond the Alps and called it Provincia Romana, which evolved into the present name. Until 1481 it was ruled by the Counts of Provence from their capital in Aix-en-Provence, then became a province of the Kings of France. While it has been part of France for more than 500 years, it still retains a distinct cultural and linguistic identity, particularly in the interior of the region.
Fortifications of the town of Aigues-Mortes #medievalcity #aiguesmortes #francetravel #occitanie
Aigues-Mortes is a fascinating medieval town located in the Camargue region of southern France. Founded in 1240 by King Louis IX, it was originally established as a port to provide France with direct access to the Mediterranean Sea. The town's name, which means dead waters in French, refers to the surrounding marshlands and salt flats that have shaped its unique landscape and history.
The most striking feature of Aigues-Mortes is its remarkably well-preserved fortifications. The town is encircled by an imposing wall nearly 1.6 kilometers long, punctuated by 20 towers and 10 gates, offering a glimpse into the military architecture of the Middle Ages. The Constance Tower, a massive round tower within the walls, once served as a royal prison and now provides panoramic views of the surrounding marshes and salt pans.
Aigues-Mortes played a significant role in the Crusades, serving as the departure point for Louis IX's seventh and eighth crusades. Its strategic importance declined over time as the coastline receded, but the town's historical and architectural heritage has been meticulously preserved.
