Places to see in ( Edwinstowe - UK )
Edwinstowe is a large village in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, England, with associations to the Robin Hood and Maid Marian legends. The population of the civil parish at the 2011 census was 5,188.
The village name meaning Edwin's resting place recalls that King (and Saint) Edwin of Northumbria's body was hidden in the church after he was killed in the Battle of Hatfield Chase, near Doncaster, probably in 633. The battle against King Penda of Mercia occurred near the present-day hamlet of Cuckney, some five miles north-west of modern Edwinstowe.
Edwinstowe is referenced twice in the Domesday Book. It records that there were five households, in addition to one priest and his four bordars, living in the hamlet in 1086.
Legend has it that Robin Hood married Maid Marian in St Mary's Church. Edwinstowe's present-day popularity is due mainly to the presence near the village of the Major Oak, a feature in the folklore of Robin Hood.
Thoresby Colliery served as Edwinstowe's main source of employment until July 2015, when the mine was permanently closed. The loss of the colliery, one of the last remaining and part of a national closure of the British deep-mined coal industry, has left tourism as the primary branch of the local economy. Nottinghamshire County Council's nearby Sherwood Forest Visitors' Centre is scheduled for redevelopment and improvement, with a contract awarded to RSPB, intended for completion by late 2017 at a projected cost of £5.3 million.
Edwinstowe has six pubs: the Black Swan, the Dukeries Lodge, Forest Lodge, Hammer and Wedge, the Manvers and the Royal Oak. Other catering facilities include the Edwinstowe Bistro Restaurant, the Cottage Tea Rooms, and Launay's Restaurant.
Environmental concerns are addressed at the Maun Valley Project Conservation Area.
Edwinstowe had a railway station between 1897 and 1955. A goods line remains. The nearest railway station today is at Mansfield (6 miles, 10 km). The village is served by twice-hourly, daytime Monday–Saturday bus services to Mansfield and Ollerton, six buses Monday–Saturday to Worksop, and one bus Monday–Friday to Nottingham. Services run twice a week to Newark and once a week to Lincoln.

Sheffield's Lost Stations - Park Goods Station
Sheffield's Lost Railway Stations - Park Goods Station
Welcome to a new series and part 1 in the story of some of Sheffield's lost railway stations.
Sheffield is a large city in the north of England and has a deep and rich industrial history - and with that, a one time expansive railway system of lines, yards and stations.
We kick off with the Park Goods Station. Part of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway - later Great Central Railway. The station is located on the side of the Sheffield & Tinsley Canal's Victoria Quays canal basin. Which back in the day was a key cog in moving items around the country.
Old photos shows stacks of wagons queuing on top of the railway arches where the yard and station once stood - alongside cranes on the wharf side ready to move goods between the railway and the canal. The depot mainly dealt with coal and lime to and from the many local collieries.
We can walk alongside the retaining wall, archways and on top of part of the station. Alongside the canal are the bridge piers from the railways approach to the station.
The station closed in the 1960s where the railways moved the the Grimethorpe and later Tinsley yard for their frieght handling.
We also see some old photos and maps of the neighbouring City Station, which was part of the Londond & North Western Railway. This say where the Sheffield Parkway and Park Square roundabout sit. Nothing is left of this old station now.
Many of Sheffield's former railway goods stations are now long gone. Bridgehouses, which pre-dated the Victoria Station, Wicker & Nunnery are all close by.

Chesterfield Canal Feeder - How Do You Keep a Canal Full?
In this latest video, we look at one of the ways in which the Chesterfield Canal received fresh water and keeps it's water levels topped up. How do you keep a Canal Full?
We take a walk up the Chesterfield from Shireoaks and come across the Brancliffe Feeder. The Brancliffe feeder takes its water from the River Ryton in Moses Seat Wood near Lindrick Dale.
After leaving Moses Seat Wood, the water then follows a meandering course through agricultural fields and the tiny farming community of Brancliffe Grange. It runs parallel to the canal for a short while and empties into the Canal just below Feeder Lock to the east of Turnerwood.
We are able to follow the Rotherham Ring Route public footpath for the majority of the route of the feeder as we track it's course to the river.

My channel was set up in 2020 mainly to feature my running adventures. I planned to film and showcase the days out and destinations my running travels took me. Mainly the Peak District and the sights and marvels of Sheffield and the surrounding regions.
However due to Covid restrictions, I found a new interest in researching and exploring old abandoned places - railway lines, canal, woodland, parks to name a few.
So the videos you'll find will be mainly be of those things. Of course, where possible I'll be running to my destination.

Chesterfield Lost Railways - Horns Bridge and the LD&ECR
Welcome to episode 2 of Chestefield's Lost Railways. We're picking up where we left off at Horns Bridge to follow the Lancashire Derbyshire & East Coast Railway (LD&ECR) through Chesterfield to it's terminus at Chesterfield Market Place Station.
Make sure you watch part 1 about the Great Central Railway in Chesterfield -
Opening in 1897, the LDECR was the third railway company to arrive in Chesterfield after the Midland Railway and the GCR. Where now sits the busy Hornsbridge Island roundabout once stood the Horns Bridge viaduct. A mixture of seven brick arches and four girder spans. The LDECR dwarfed the lower level Midland and Great Central lines. That must have been a grand entrance to the town for travellers.
The line closed in the 1950s and in 1960 the demolition of the viaduct began with cranes lifting off the girder sections. Some arches survived longer than others and left this strange sight of the last arch still towered over the landscape until that was also finally demolished to make way for the new road system in the 1980s.
From here, the line swept south of the town centre on a sizeable embankment, crossing the Boythorpe Viaduct and Brampton Branch of the Midland Railway. It swung across Park Road into the Chesterfield Market Place station. Nothing remains of the station now except the former station hotel from 1899 - The Portland Hotel which is now a Wetherspoons pub and hotel.
Did you know that Chesterfield was never the intended final destination for the LDECR. The reference to Lancashire in the company title is a little out of context geographically to where the line actually ended up serving. But their initial plans were to extend west as far Warrington and the Manchester Ship Canal. That didn’t get anywhere near happening except for an outline of a rather optimistic route across the Peak District. Similarly to the East, the line didn’t make it to it’s proposed desination of Sutton on Sea, rather reaching just short of Lincoln at Pyewipe junction. We refer to the LD&ECR, but it’s time under that company was actually short lived – less than a decade as the railway was absorbed into the Great Central railway in 1907.

1Z56 - The High Marnham and Tinsley Part 4 - Shirebrook Junction to Ollerton
On Saturday January 5th 2013 UK Railtours ran a tour from Finsbury Park in London to the new Rail Innovation & Development Centre (RIDC) test track, part of the former freight only line from Shirebrook to High Marnham. The tour, originating in Finsbury Park -as it was too long to use Kings Cross, travelled via the ECML to Peterborough, then via Melton Mowbray to Syston Junction where it joined the Midland Main Line for a while. The tour then went North via Trent Junction, Toton, and the Erewash Valley Line as far as Ironville Junction, before joining the normally freight only line as far as Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Thence the train travelled North as far as Shirebrook Junction -where the tour joined former Great Central metals on which it travelled as far as High Marnham. Returning Westwards from High Marnham the train took the Northerly section of the triangle at Shirebrook before heading Northwards towards Shireoaks. From Shireoaks the train took the former South Yorkshire Joint Lines as far as St Catherines and Bridge Junctions in the outskirts of Doncaster. Avoiding Doncaster the train took the freight routes via Rotherham to the remains of the former Tinsley Yard, which was reached at nightfall. The journey back to Finsbury Park was then made via the Midland Main Line and Erewash Valley Line, the Syston to Peterborough line, and finally the ECML. Motive power on this tour was provided by two EWS liveried Class 66 locomotives, topping and tailing the train, -namely 66103 -which worked front-end from Finsbury Park to High Marnham and from Tinsley to Finsbury Park, and 66154 which ran front-end from High Marnham to Tinsley. These videos cover the action on the 1Z56 between Finsbury Park and Ollerton Station (on the High Marnham branch). Happy Viewing! :)

BIBA2013 Conference & Exhibition -- Behaviour based motor insurance
This year's motor session, chaired by the BBC Transport Correspondent Richard Westcott, looks at the fundamental changes in the way motor insurance is constructed and sold. Is behaviour rating the way of the future? We have gathered leading experts from the telematics sector to discuss all the relevant issues in what could be the new growth area for brokers.
Paul Stacy of Wunelli has been at the forefront of developing leading telematics products along with Andy Wigmore from insurethebox. Peter Shaw from Thatcham will talk about the new box being fitted into all new cars by manufacturers and Simon Warsop from Aviva has introduced behavioural driving with Smartphone apps. Add into the mix the industry issues with personal data and sharing incident data and this promises to be another not to be missed session.
