Ongi Monastery (Mongolian: Онгийн хийд, Ongiin Khiid) is the collective name for the ruins of two monasteries that face each other across the Ongi River in Saikhan-Ovoo district of Dundgovi Province, in south-central Mongolia. The Barlim Monastery is located on the north bank of the river while the Khutagt Monastery sits on the south bank. The older southern complex consisted of various administrative buildings as well as 11 temples. The northern complex, built in the 18th century, consisted of 17 temples - among them one of the largest temples in all of Mongolia. The grounds housed also 4 Buddhist universities. Founded in 1660, it was one of the largest monasteries in Mongolia and housed over 1000 monks at its height. The ruins are situated about 18 km south of the town of Saikhan Ovoo.

Both complexes of Ongi Monastery were completely destroyed in 1939 during anti-religious purges carried out under Khorloogiin Choibalsan, the leader of the Communist Party of Mongolia. Over 200 monks were killed, and many surviving monks were imprisoned or forcibly laicized and conscripted into the Communist controlled army.

A large number of ruins including a tall stupa can be seen on the river and on the surrounding hills. In the 1990s, it was decided to rebuild the monastery. The first temple was inaugurated in 2004. There is a small museum in a ger in front of it. One of the stupas has just been reconstructed as well. It has a commemorative plaque indicating the names of the monks who were killed in 1939.

Dundgovi province is situated in the south of the country about 240 kilometres or 150 miles from capital city Ulaanbaatar. It consists largely of semi-arid steppe and low hills. Temperatures in the summer may top 32 °C or 90 °F, while winter temperatures may dip below −30 °C or −22 °F. Precipitation is scarce, and air humidity is low.

Seasonal climatic problems include spring sandstorms and winter zud. There is no commercial air transport to the Dundgobi province. Public transportation includes bus but many of the more rural sums are not on the mass transport lines. Much travel is done via mikrs (micro-bus or Russian furgon) or by private jeeps. The capital, Mandalgovi, is connected to Ulaanbaatar by a 300 km paved road completed in 2013.

Many locals own 250 cc motorcycles, which they use as their main mode of transportation.

The province's main industry is animal husbandry and livestock products (such as wool, cashmere). The Dundgobi province is also noted among Mongolian locals for its airag (fermented horse milk), a traditional Mongolian alcoholic drink.

IKH NART - IKH GAZRLIN CHULUU - MANDALGOVI - ERDENEDALAI - TERELJ - KHENTII - DADAL

My first solo trip abroad and of all places, I've chosen to go to Mongolia. It was definitely love at first sight despite some initial feels of trepidation as the day of my trip came closer.

Never have I feel such a deep seated sense of belonging for a place. The vastness and relative silence of her ever changing landscapes is truly overwhelming. There is a spirit in Mongolia that refreshes you and it certainly made me a lot more introspective.

There is much to learn from her beautiful people - their kindness, their hospitality, admirable tenacity as well as their wonderful love for life.

I have truly found home in Mongolia and I know I will return to my homeland again and again.

Mongolia Motorcycle ride Adventure - South Mongolia 2018

Mongolia Motorcycle ride Adventure - South Mongolia 2018
A 6-day long journey through South Mongolia. We journeyed excitingly from the heart of Ulaanbaatar to Dalanzadgad, where we rode for a grand total of 13 hours, stopping only for 45 minute breaks and petrol top-ups. While the paved roads were a breeze, the ride itself was not without its set of challenges; the bike we rented was a mere 125 cc transporting the 2 of us and our belongings. Needless to say, our bodies were battered at the end of day.
Rest and relief came in the form of a 2 day guided Gobi tour through several picturesque scenes in South Mongolia namely the Yol Valley, Khongar Sand Dunes and the Flaming Cliff. These scenes in South Mongolia mainly consisted of mammoth natural structures amidst a sea of brown and red hues. Climbing the sand dune is a must, though summitting it is an option but one will still be immensely rewarded with beautiful aerial view of the entire Gobi landscape.
Having recovered from our ride, we went offroad towards Tsagaan Suvraga. The 2-hour long journey was satisfying indeed as we navigated to the destination ourselves with the help of an offline map (Maps.Me) through several bumps and hard rocks. We raced back to the main road to ensure that we could find a motel to stay at in Mandalgovi, and of course we had to brave triple trouble in ascending order of occurrence: strong winds, sandstorm and heavy rain.
After what appeared to be our worst stay ever in a motel in Mandalgovi, we set off to return to Ulaanbaatar, relief washing over us because we have landed ourselves in the heart of the city, with a glass of Pepsi, no less.

Hitchhiking Journey across Deepest Mongolia

In July 2022 I went to Mongolia to spend 2 weeks exploring various sights of the country. I hitchhiked across Mongolia from Ulaanbaatar to Russian Altai following its main road that I personally call Trans-Mongolian highway. Along my way I met a lot of good people and visited a number of peculiar places. In this video, I share my adventures with you.

Enjoy!

A Love Song for the Steppe

Traditional Mongolian Long Song performed in Mandalgovi, Mongolia. This style evokes the vastness of the Central Asian steppe, the mountains, the people, the rhythms of life in the open steppe, the beauty of horses running, the freedom of space, the embrace of everything.

Nadaam Festival, Mongolia

In Mandalgov to see the Nadaam Festival. The Nadaam Festival, also called the three games of men, consists of Mongolian wrestling, horse racing and archery. I was able to see all but the archery competition. The dance you see the wrestlers doing prior to the matches and after winning, is to honour the sky gods, so I was told.

courtesy of wikipedia:
512 or 1024 wrestlers meet in a single-elimination tournament that lasts nine or ten rounds. Mongolian traditional wrestling is an untimed competition in which wrestlers lose if they touch the ground. When picking pairs, the wrestler with the greatest fame has the privilege to choose his own opponent. Wrestlers wear two-piece costumes consisting of a tight shoulder vest (zodog) and shorts (shuudag). Only men are allowed to play.

Unlike Western horse racing, which consists of short sprints generally not much longer than 2 km, Mongolian horse racing as featured in Naadam is a cross-country event, with races 15--30 km long. The length of each race is determined by age class. For example, two-year-old horses race for ten miles and seven-year-olds for seventeen miles. Up to 1000 horses from any part of Mongolia can be chosen to participate. Race horses are fed a special diet.

Children from 5 to 13 are chosen as jockeys who train in the months preceding the races. While jockeys are an important component, the main purpose of the races is to test the skill of the horses.
