Maiduguri, also called Yerwa by its locals,[citation needed] is the capital and the largest city of Borno State in north-eastern Nigeria. The city sits along the seasonal Ngadda River which disappears into the Firki swamps in the areas around Lake Chad.[1] Maiduguri was founded in 1907 as a military outpost by the British and has since grown rapidly with a population exceeding a million by 2007.
The region was home to the Kanem-Bornu Empire for centuries. Maiduguri actually consists of two cities: Yerwa to the West and Old Maiduwuri to the east. Old Maiduwuri was selected by the British as their military headquarters while Yerwa was selected at approximately the same time by Shehu Abubakar Garbai of Borno to replace Kukawa as the new traditional capital of the Kanuri people.[1]
Maiduguri is one of the sixteen LGAs that conMaiduguri is estimated to have a population of 1,197,497 as of 2007.[6][dead link] Its residents are mostly Muslim including Kanuri, Hausa, Shuwa, Bura, Marghi, and Fulani ethnic groups. There is also a considerable Christian population and people from Southern states such as the Igbo, Ijaw, and Yoruba.
Economy[edit]
Maiduguri is home to three markets which include an ultra modern Monday market that has a spectacular satellite image view.[7] There is an ancient museum, and the city is served by the Maiduguri International Airport.
The city has one of the best layouts in Nigeria. The values of land and properties are high. A 2009 survey of property markets in Nigeria positioned Maiduguri as the third most expensive for buying and renting in after Abuja and Lagos.
Maiduguri is the principal trading hub for northeastern Nigeria. Its economy is largely based on services and trade with a small share of manufacturing. The city lies at the end of a railway line connecting Port Harcourt, Enugu, Kafanchan, Kuru, Bauchi, and finally Maiduguri.[8]
Education[edit]
Maiduguri has one of the best-equipped universities and hospitals in Nigeria: The University of Maiduguri attracts foreign students from neighbouring countries especially Cameroon and Niger Republic. The College of Medical Sciences is amongst the top five best medical schools in Nigeria. Other higher institutions include Ramat Polytechnic, College of Agriculture and College of Education, and El-kanemi College of Islamic Theology.
As of 2011, the Future Prowess Islamic School provided a free, co-ed Western and Islamic education to orphans and vulnerable children.[9]
Sports and leisure[edit]
It is home to the El-Kanemi Warriors, a football team and the city has an active local football league. The Kyarimi Park is the oldest and largest zoo in Nigeria. The zoo attracts thousands of visitors per year. The city is within a short driving distance to picnic areas in Alo Lake and Zambiza game reserve.stitute the Borno Emirate, a traditional state located in Borno State, Nigeria.[2]

I Visited Nigeria’s Biggest City (Avoid These Men) 🇳🇬
Lagos, the largest city in Nigeria, is a bustling metropolis known for its vibrant energy. Situated along the Atlantic Ocean, it boasts stunning beaches and a diverse culinary scene. Today, I experience its lively markets for the first time. Now I'm not gonna lie, you'll see in this video that I've encountered many moments of intensity, specifically when some of the locals approached me asking for money. It was a stark reminder of the economic disparities that exist in this dynamic city, and I'll share with you how I navigated these encounters with the utmost respect and understanding.
Despite these moments, Lagos stole a piece of my heart with its warmth, resilience, and unwavering spirit. Join me as I navigate through the colorful markets, intense interactions, while immersing myself in the rhythmic beats of Afrobeat music pulsating through the air.

Kwatarkwashi Rock, Gusau, Zamfara, Nigeria
Kwatarkwashi Rock is about 350 meters above sea level and has a massive landmass of about 1 square mile. The Rock is located in Kwatarkwashi Town of Bungudu local government area, 12km from Gusau, the capital city of Zamfara, Nigeria.
Kwatarkwashi rock is a magnificent granitic rock formation, beautiful to behold. The surrounding scenery offers natural ambience for relaxation and adventures. It is one of the most exotic natural rock formations in Nigeria.
According to local legend, some powerful spirits lived in the rock thereby forcing hunters to settle around the foot of the rock, that was how kwatarkwashi town came to be. Settlers in the past use the rock for worship, and the performance of the ceremony called 'Daukar Maiki' (catching of the eagles). Eagles used to live in the caves and catching them was the main feature of Daukar Maiki.
There are caves where the locals used to hide during difficult battles within the rock; the biggest of the caves can hide a thousand people. The rock is also home to a natural spring that never runs dry, providing cool, refreshing water for locals.
Kwatarkwashi Rock is an ideal place for excursion, picnics, sightseeing, bird watching and relaxation.

9 Things NOT To Do in Nigeria
There are many misconceptions about Nigeria, it's not a poor country, it has a rich culture and cuisine, and not every man there is a prince who wants to give you money. Although Lagos, Abuja, and Calabar seem like well-established tourist locations, there are a few things we should avoid doing when we visit.
1. Don't Flash The Cash.
Most places accept credit cards, so the need for cash is low. Avoid carrying cash if possible and if you have to carry cash, avoid showing it. Keep your wallet and phone in your front pockets and don't wear any expensive jewelry or watches.
2. Don't Make Assumptions.
Although most Nigerians speak English and almost half are Christians you shouldn't assume their culture is the same. Over half of Nigerians are Muslim and the Nigerian culture is an amalgamation of multiple ethnic groups.
3. Don't Forget Your Vaccines!
In addition to your routine vaccines, it is recommended that you get vaccinated for Measles, Yellow fever, Polio, Hepatitis A, Malaria, and Typhoid. It is also a good idea to carry proof of your vaccinations with you as you may be asked for this at the airport.
4. Don't Forget Your Visa.
Unless you are a citizen of a neighboring country, you are going to need a visa to enter Nigeria. Start the process at least a month before your trip because it is quite a lengthy process and requires a lot of paperwork. it is also quite expensive, so be prepared!
5. Don't Be Afraid of The Cuisine!
Nigeria offers all types of international cuisines but their own is delicious (it maybe a bit spicy!) try Bolli which is roasted Plantain Jollof rice and Suya which are spicy kebabs.
6. Don't say you Love Africa!
Nigeria is a country, Africa is a continent. Going to Nigeria and telling a Nigerian you love Africa is like going to Cuba and saying you love North America!
7. Don,t Go Out Alone At Night
Taking walks or going out clubbing alone at night is not recommended. Get a guide or befriend a local, also avoid public transport and book cabs in advance from reputable companies!
8. Don't Forget Your passport
Get photocopies of your passport to carry around with you for identification and only show the original at the airport.
9. Pack Carefully!
Make sure you pack some necessities in your hand luggage, hold luggage can be delayed or even disappear so to avoid spending days in the same clothes, put some in your carry-on bag. Pack a torch and a battery pack too, as power outages are a common occurrence.
Which country should we do next?
