Madhugiri Hill, also known as Maddagiri betta, is the second-largest monolith in Asia. A monolith is a single rock formation of a mountain without any soil or sediment. The summit of the hill stands at 3900m, and its ascending nature made it an impregnable fort in the history of southern India. Madhugiri Betta is located in the Tumkur district of Karnataka, approximately 80 to 120 km from Bengaluru city, depending on the starting point. To get there, take a right turn from Dobbaspet town instead of going to Tumkur town. The town of Madhugiri is surrounded by Thimlapura forest, and its name means Honey-hill. Upon entering the premises, the lower fort wall alone looks gigantic. Visitors need to provide their details to security upon arrival, but there is no need to register in advance. The government offices were once located here, but they have since moved elsewhere, so practically, it is now a ghost town. The trek to the summit takes you through a plethora of historical structures, half-ruined, and through three walls of defence or gateways before you reach the topmost fort. The trek offers extraordinary views of the town, the forest, a few small lakes, and the surrounding hillocks. The climb is challenging and requires visitors to carry their food and water. From the starting point to Gateway I - Antaralada Bagilu, it's a series of steps and plain ground. The trek takes you through three defence walls or gateways. For every gate you cross, it seems as if what you see ahead is the highest point of the trek, but as the journey unfolds, the topmost fort is seen only at the end after crossing the third gateway. Past Gateway I, you'll find a flat land and a dried-up pond called Bheemana Dhone ~ Bheema Tank with a silt trap to collect clean water. On the flat land, there is a small Hanuman temple and a granary. After Gateway I to Gateway II - Diddi Bagilu, the trail gradually ascends with rock-cut steps along the way. A very tricky part comes ahead as you go further, an inclination of about 75-80 degrees. Visitors need to carefully walk horizontally, maintaining balance through the narrow foot space on the rock. Ensure that you place one foot at a time carefully and go slow, taking your time. Voila, you just entered Gateway II - Diddi bagilu. Gateway II to Gateway III is still challenging, with no ropes or handrails, just pure rock, and it's steep too. Visitors have to be careful and wear good trekking shoes. This is Gateway III - Mysore Gate. There is no sign of a fort yet, but the scene from here is amazing. You need to climb for another 10 to 15 mins to reach the fort. The summit offers panoramic views of the Thimmalapura forest, reaching far and wide into the horizon and the blue skies that blend in flawlessly, making the whole experience feel like you're in a movie! Visitors can soak in the views and take pictures. After spending about an hour on the top and having breakfast, it's time to climb down. Climbing down requires visitors to be more careful than climbing up since they have already spent half of their energy climbing up. Visitors must take their time and go slow. If in doubt, there is no shame in sitting. Madhugiri Fort, in its initial mud avatar, is said to have been built by a local chieftain and feudal lord named Raja Hire Gowda under the rule of the Vijayanagara dynasty in the 15th century. In 1678 AD, the fort was captured by Devaraja, the Dalavayi, a military commander.

Madhugiri is a town in Tumkur district in the Indian state of Karnataka. The town derives its name from a hillock, Madhu-giri (honey-hill) which is to the south of the place. Madhugiri is one of the 34 educational districts of the Karnataka state
Madhugiri is a single hill. Nestled on its steep slopes is a fort. Antaralada Bagilu, Diddi Bagilu, and Mysuru Gate are the three gateways of the fort. A series of doorways leads to the hill. The ruined temple of Gopalakrishna is located at the top.
The construction of the original mud fort was undertaken by Raja Hire Gowda in the 17th century around 1670 AD. An interesting incident prompted the Gowda family to consider building a fortress. A stray sheep went missing around the Madhugiri hillock only to return late in the night dripping with water. This was music to the ears since a spring would definitely be welcome sign for rain deficient area. A decision to construct a fortress was arrived and the task was completed. The Gowdas started ruling this region based at Madhugiri Fort.
Genesis of the name Madhugiri is derived from the Honeybee colonies which were prevalent in those days towards the northern parts of the Madhugiri fortress. There are several historical temples in and around Madhugiri. However three of them are the main ones that draw regular devotees, one is Sri Venkatramana Swamy then Sri Malleswara Swamy both are situated next to each other. the third one is the Dandina Maramma temple at the entrance of the town while coming from Bangalore/Tumkur. There is also a Jaina temple on the precincts of the Madhugiri fort.

We did this ride about 2 months back, long before the Covid 2nd wave started. Humne new riding gears liya huya hai and we had to get used to the gears so the main plan behind this ride.
Hum nikle around morning 8AM, raste mein breakfast kiya fir reached around 11:30AM. Bohot sahi spot hai, for hiking, family get together but early jana is recommended coz it gets too sunny later. Get lot of water and travel light if you want to do this hike.
