QUITO | ECUADOR - CRAZY FOOD & UNKNOWN ATTRACTIONS (planes, parks, guinea pigs & guts)
Today, we sadly have to leave the wonderful country of Colombia to continue on our journey down South America. Our third country on this trip - ECUADOR, and we're flying into the beautiful capital city of QUITO.
Our travel day started off on the wrong foot as the airline check-in agent was completely misinterpreting Ecuador's travel requirements, and made us almost miss for our flight. REMEMBER - make sure to have all your accommodation and flights booked prior to traveling anywhere in South America.
We arrived at Mariscal Sucre International Airport where we had arranged for a pick-up from our hostel (we were arriving late, and taxis in South America are notoriously dodgy, especially at night...). Our accommodation for the night was Hostal Juana de Arco ( a clean hostel located in a beautiful colonial building right in the heart of the historical district of Quito.
Before bed, we headed out nearby for some much needed dinner and chanced upon a local restaurant which served a rather unique dish (unique for us that is...). CUY or GUINEA PIGS are often kept as pets in many countries, but it is a staple and a culturally important food for the people of Ecuador, Peru, Colombia and Bolivia. If you can get past their cute looks, cuy is actually an extremely delicious dish, tasting like very fatty pork crossed with duck meat.
We spent the next morning at Tatoo Adventure Gear ( to get Jocelyn some new boots after the rather pathetic demise of her previous pair (Vasque... you have failed us for the last time) - this is a great place to pick-up any outdoor gear that you may have forgotten.
See where it all fell apart on our hike in Cocora Valley, Colombia -
Afterwards, we headed to Parque Metropolitano Guangüiltagua ( - specifically Mirador Cotopaxi, for some amazing views of the city.
For our second dinner, we stopped by a very local park for some amazing Ecuadorian street food. Tripa Park / Tripe Park ( is a small area where multiple street vendors gather in the evenings. Some of the MUST-TRY dishes include:
- Tripa Mishqui: charred BBQ intestines served atop a bean & potato stew
- Empanadas de Viento: Ecuador's version of the humble empanada - crispy, flaky, cheesy and delicious
- Morocho - spiced corn pudding drink, with a dash of cinnamon
- Carne en Pincho - meat on a stick, what more do you want?

Montañita, a small surfer town in the Santa Elena province, located in the south pacific region of Ecuador. This town is considered to be a surfing hotspot. Montañita hosts many important surf competitions that attracts surfers from all over the world. Besides being a surfer paradise, this town is well known for its hippie lifestyle due to its regulation regarding the use of marihuana and its busy nightlife.
