Travel in France: Ploërmel - The Best of Brittany? Is it Worth a Visit? It's Outdoor Market is WOW!
Looking for top travel tips? Is Ploërmel, France one of the best places in Brittany to visit?? It may not be the most common place to vacation - some French people might even say, You're going WHERE?? - but this Breton town has a lot more to offer than meets the eye. And it makes an excellent home base from which to explore the region. Whether you are staying for a short visit or a long one. And yes - you can see a lot even without a car.
Ploërmel has one of the best weekly outdoor farmer's markets I've ever been to. So plan a stay that includes a kitchen. You are going to want to cook for sure. It's a foodie's paradise! There are several boulangeries/patisseries (bakeries/pastry shops), several BIG supermarkets and many great places to eat out (even aside from Kebab Chez Tonton 56 😆) but that Friday market will make your little eyes go WOW I guarantee you.
If you like the outdoors, Ploërmel has one of the biggest lakes in Brittany and thus lots of watersports to enjoy as well as miles of phenomenal bike and walking trails and places to hike around. There are great museums, a bowling alley, a movie theater, local soccer/football games and great sites, towns and villages close by to explore.
I spent a month in Ploërmel and wrote a blog post about it for my website, Reganland.com. I wanted to see what it would be like to put together a video version of that post so I used it as a voice-over script and then assembled photos, video and web page content to create the video.
I won't be doing that again. 🤣
It was fun - a lot of work, but fun - however, based on what I learned through that process - next time, I'll use a different process! If I'd taken more photos and videos, that would have helped, but next time my whole approach will be different.
In any case - I hope you enjoy the video and even more so, I hope you make it out to Ploërmel sometime if you've not already been.
Cheers to good travel!
Regan

Pontivy, a large market town, is made up of two distinct halves. There is the mediaeval area which centres on the 15th cent. castle Chateau des Rohan, and the old town, with its beautiful timbered buildings. Excellent shopping. France : Brittany. (蓬蒂维, Pontivy, Pontivy). See on map .

Valley of the Saints in the heart of Brittany, France
Valley of the Saints in the heart of Brittany, France
France is creating its Easter Island with a timeless saga set in stone. Year after year new statues adorn a Breton Hill, are a tribute to the founders of Christianity in this region, from the north come monks, Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall: St Tugdual, Saint Hernin, St. Gildas, St. Brieuc, St. Malo. Breton that is a project that has gone on for over fifteen years and the statues are very much in fifty years. This project aims to create a thousand monumental statues between 3 and 4 meters high, in blocks of granite.
In 1999 the philosopher and lay missionary, Philippe Abjean founded what is called the Valley of the Saints, to immortalize the monks, a site ready for eternity in those days say emphatically. The idea is to fill the valley with a thousand monumental statues between 3 and 4 meters high, in the Breton granite blocks. At the time we got to fifty.
The project is fascinating, but challenging: every statue now costs 13,000 euro and to finance the work it appeals to patrons, a network that includes individuals, companies or associations. Those who make a donation can choose their own saint. [more info]
The statues are not the only attraction in the area: a seventeenth-century chapel and a feudal mound attract tourists for many years. But this valley has something magical and not just for humans, the evidence is a Gallic fountain whose water had the power to cure animals.
