A Tour of Lockhart, Texas
Lockhart is a charming little town located just half an hour from Austin and is definitely worth stopping by and checking out the historic buildings and getting some good barbecue!
A day in Lockhart, Texas (live music and BBQ tour)
Lockhart has a population of about 15k people. It's located 30 miles south of Austin and 70 miles northeast of San Antonio. It's regarded as the BBQ Capital of Texas by the Texas Legislature, with the Big 4 BBQ places being Black's, Kreuz, Smitty's, and Chisholm Trail BBQ. The historic square has an impressive courthouse building dating back to 1894 and the town has the oldest continuously running library in Texas. Live music venues in Lockhart include Kreuz Market, The Pearl, Lockhart Arts and Craft, Fiddler's Green Music Shop, Old Pal Texas Tavern, Load Off Fanny's and Commerce Hall.

The fact that this Dallas institution has been a mainstay of the smoked meats industry for decades is evident in their skill. The ribs are good and smoky, the brisket is succulent and tender, and the cooks here are unbeatable when it comes to sides. Enjoy some potato salad, candied yams, and collard greens. Then be ready to require a snooze right away.
4. One90 Smoked Meats – Dallas, Texas
Whole briskets, turkey breasts, and pork loins are available at this upscale distributor of smoked meats; they are all vacuum-sealed and ready for in-home preparation. Additionally, there is a good selection of eat-in and take-out dishes, such as pulled pork sandwiches, brisket tacos, and salads.
3. Intrinsic Smokehouse Brewery + BBQ Catering – Garland, Texas
Order the smoked turkey here even though it may go against everything you know about what to order at a barbecue joint. It is moist, tasty, and delectable because they brine it to perfection. Weekend brunch at Intrinsic is also a terrific time to visit. The staff gets very inventive with the menu at this time, delivering dishes like brisket with burnt-end gravy on a biscuit with a fried egg on top.
2. Cattleack Barbeque – Dallas, Texas
Cattleack has a wait every time the doors are open because it is only open for lunch on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. The Hatch chile and cheese sausages are exceptionally sharp, and the brisket is delicious and moist. Want to eat a great feast? The Toddfather, a sizable sandwich with brisket, pulled pork, sausage, and a dollop of coleslaw for added crunch, is what you should order.

We hit the road after a night in the stunning Oura Beach Reserve, free camping and head towards our next destination of Darlington Point. On the way we stop and meander around Lockhart discovering there's more to do than one might think. Definitely could spend a little more time there but there's always next time. #supportsmallbusiness

Lockhart State Park was built by the Civilian Conservation Corps back in the 1930s. Along with numerous buildings, roads, and bridges, the men and women of the CCC also built a swimming pool that utilizes the spring water coming from a nearby creek. More recently, a nine-hole golf course was added.

If you've watched the Two Tired Teachers much, you know we love our state parks. This is our second time to visit Lockhart, and we still don't love it. Lockhart State Park has only 20 campsites.
Sites 1 - 10 are full hookups. Those sites are on a pit'nwheel, the picnic tables are covered, and the sites are level. Sites 11 - 13 share a drive. Ideally, peIople park on the right, and everyone can drive on the left down this shared drive. Because there is a nearby creek and soil erosion, that doesn't happen. The sites are not level. We took site 13 because it's a back in site; it didn't matter where we parked because there was nowhere to drive. Sites 14 - 20 are back in, for the most part. Some of those sites are very short, so you will want to check the length of the drive before you reserve a site.
One of Lockhart State Park's selling points is the swimming pool. Pool prices at the time of the video are free for children 5 and under, $1 for children 6 - 12, $2 for anyone 13 and older. If you are not staying at the park, you will need to pay the $3 entrance fee to the park. You can purchase pool tickets up to 15 days in advance, but your money will not be refunded if the pool is closed for weather reasons.
The second reason people might choose Lockhart State Park is the golf course. It's a nine-hole golf course. Lockhart State Park Golf Score Card is downloadable from their page on the Texas State Parks website. The weekday green fee is $10 or $250 a yearly green fee. Golf carts are $11 for 9 holes or $16 for 18 holes. Golf club rentals are $7. If you have a private golf cart, there is a daily trail fee of $3 or a yearly trail fee of $50.
The third reason you might stay at Lockhart State Park is that it claims to be the barbecue capital of Texas. There are four major barbecue restaurants in Lockhart: Blacks, Smitty's, Kruez Market, and Chisholm Trail. The sauce at Kruez' is a bit spicy. Sharon loved it. I'm of the opinion that if it's really good barbecue, it doesn't need sauce.
Lockhart State Park does have a Recreation Hall that is a group site. Credit card deposit of $200 is required at check-in. We charge a $200 per day non-peak rate Monday - Thursday; $350 peak rate is charged from Friday - Sunday. Rent the Recreation Hall for Friday, Saturday and Sunday to get a 20 percent discount. Day-use capacity is 75 people. We charge a discounted $2 entrance fee for group hall users. Tables and chairs for about 50 people are inside, with multiple picnic tables outside.

The recreation hall has a beautiful patio area in back. That patio is used as an outdoor dance pavillion. The recreation hall is a CCC building that is lovely.
There are a few trails in the park. They range in difficulty from easy to challenging. Because of the name, we chose not to venture down the Rattlesnake Run Trail. 😁
