Saint-Paul-de-Vence can be seen from afar, with its medieval appearance surrounded by ramparts, at the top of a hill between the Mediterranean and the Grasse Pre-Alps.

Many artists stayed there after the Second World War and brought an international reputation to the village.Today, the Maeght Foundation maintains the artistic vocation of the place.

It is certainly the most visited village in the hinterland of Nice and even one of the most touristic in France.

The fortified village of St Paul de Vence is microscopic. It only takes a few minutes to cross the village from side to side but you can spend a few hours there discovering the fantastic views of the ramparts, the architecture of the houses, the squares, the amazing art galleries and the few museums. This charming village perched between the Col de Vence and the Mediterranean offers magnificent panoramas to its visitors. On the sea side, the unobstructed view extends to the Cap d'Antibes: a painting that inspired more than one painter charmed by these Provençal colors. Modigliani, Matisse, Soutine or even Utrillo were seduced by the light of this medieval city and placed these impregnable viewpoints on their easels. At the entrance to the village, in the shade of tall plane trees, the famous boules square, immortalized by the petanque games of Lino Ventura and Yves Montand, remains a must.

THE 19TH CENTURY: PAINTERS DISCOVER SAINT-PAUL
In the 19th century, the hills were covered with flowers, vines and olive trees. The brown stones of the village, the colors of the countryside and the light of the South attract artists at the dawn of the 20th century...It was in the early 1920s that Saint-Paul was discovered by artists. The precursors are the painters who find in this peaceful village of Provence colors and light of incomparable richness and intensity: Paul Signac, Raoul Dufy or even Chaïm Soutine come to set up their easels in the village. Their arrival was facilitated by the creation in 1911 of a tram line linking Cagnes to Vence and serving Saint-Paul. If this line helps to open up the village, it also allows agricultural products to be exported to Nice, Antibes or Grasse.Painters like to meet at Paul Roux, a multifaceted Saint-Paulois, painter, collector and owner of the Robinson (which in 1932 became the Colombe d'Or inn), whose walls are still adorned with their paintings today. Many other painters will follow these precursors, such as Matisse and Picasso who came to Saint-Paul “as neighbours”, one from Vence, the other from Vallauris and Cannes where he stayed for a long time.

THE XXTH CENTURY: ACTORS, POETS AND WRITERS

Throughout the 20th century, actors, artists and writers made Saint-Paul a bubbling cultural hotbed. While some are just passing through, others choose to live there. They each mark the village in their own way with an indelible mark. The 1950s and 1960s were the golden age of the village: Saint-Paul de Vence was then transformed into a fabulous film set on which the stars of the French and foreign 7th art met, attracted to the Côte d'Azur by the Victorine studios in Nice and the Cannes Film Festival. The presence of Jacques Prévert in Saint-Paul for fifteen years helped attract many directors such as Henri-Georges Clouzot and André Cayatte.

2021-09 | Travel on Paris Metro RATP Train - Gare du Nord to Lieusaint Moissy

As part of a business trip in Paris I was required to travel to Villaroche. At the time of my visit, it was not practical to stay near Villaroche and due to the nature of my accomodation in Paris, not practical to hire a car.

Fortunately Paris has a very good metro system which which is reliable and inexpensive and will take you to the wider Paris metro area and beyond. In this case I was able to travel from Paris Gare du Nord to the Lieusaint Moissy, which was the nearest station to my final destination of Villaroche. Travel time was approximately 45 minutes or so.

The RATP metro trains have double deck carriages with plenty of seating. At the time of filming the Covid-19 pandemic was still a major feature which required face masks to be worn; hence the train was not a busy as is would most likely be under normal circumstances.

It was a good experience and a very good price costing 6.70 EUR each way if my memory is correct (Could not find the ticket stub at the time of upload!).

📚 History:
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a village with a rich ancient heritage, as shown by its Roman monuments. The most impressive ones are the Triumphal Arch and the Jules Mausoleum, which stand at the entrance of the old city of Glanum, a site that reveals the history of different civilizations. The arch celebrates the Roman victory over Gaul, while the mausoleum honors a local family who became Roman citizens. Glanum also has other remarkable structures, such as temples, baths, theatres, forums, houses and a dam. Some Roman elements can be found in other buildings in the village, such as the Château de Roussan and the Church of Saint-Pierre. The town, which dates back to Prehistory, was named after Saint Remigius in Latin.

🛶 Things to do:
Saint-Rémy-de-Provence is a village with a lot of ancient charm and attractions. You can visit the Site Archeologique de Glanum, an old Roman city with temples, baths, theatres and more, as well as the Triumphal Arch and the Jules Mausoleum, two magnificent monuments at its entrance. You can also enjoy the Carrières de Lumières, a spectacular sound and light show that features the works of famous artists, or follow the Van Gogh Route, a trail that takes you to the places that inspired the painter’s masterpieces. You can discover the flavors and colors of Provence at the Saint-Rémy Outdoor Markets, where you can find local products like cheese, honey, flowers, pottery and more, or taste some of the local wines from the vineyards around the village. You can also hike or bike in the Alpilles Natural Regional Park, a beautiful area with scenic landscapes, rich flora and fauna, and historical and cultural sites, such as the Château de Montauban, where the writer Alphonse Daudet stayed. Finally, you can relax in one of the many cafés in the village, where you can enjoy a coffee, a pastry, a sandwich or a salad, and try some of the local specialties, like the navettes, the calissons or the fougasse.

13 Places Around the World to See the Bluest Water

Get more Tips here!

The only thing better than a beach getaway is escaping to a location that has crystal blue waters. Whether you’re participating in a water excursion or just lounging on a quiet beach, you’ll see the clearest, bluest water at these 13 locations:

1. Cocos Island, Costa Rica
This island is a prime location for scuba diving and snorkeling, not only because of the clear water but also because it’s inhabited by 300 varieties of fish and over 30 species of coral. Get that waterproof camera ready!

2. Knip Beach, Curacao
A snorkeler’s dream location is Knip Beach on the island of Curacao. The water here is as blue as the liquor this Caribbean country is known for.

3. Devil’s Bay, British Virgin Islands
This destination, has some of the clearest water in the entire Caribbean. You’ll have to climb through large boulders, swim, or take a boat to get to this destination, but it’s worth it in the end.

4. Koh Lipe, Thailand
There are four main beaches: Karma Beach, Sunset Beach, Pattaya Beach, and Sunrise Beach. They each contain calm and shallow water that’s practically see-thru. It really doesn’t get any better than this!

5. Five-Flower Lake in Jiuzhaigou National Park, China
It is so clear, you can see straight through to the bottom. This location is also surrounded by brilliant vegetation and stunning waterfalls.

6. Jaco, East Timor
The locals are prohibited from visiting the island since it’s considered a holy place, but native fishermen gladly help tourists navigate their way to Jaco to enjoy its turquoise water.

7. Con Son, Vietnam
This area was previously known for its political history and as the home to prison inmates. But today, it’s known for being a tropical paradise, covered in pristine white sand, and visitors can enjoy the breathtaking views of the turquoise water.

8. Islas del Rosario, Colombia
Pick from any of the tiny, relatively uninhabited islands and you can enjoy the crystal clear waters lined by white sand beaches. Then, throw on some snorkeling gear and take a plunge into the water to view Colombia’s largest coral reef with your own two eyes.

9. Havelock Island, India
It’s not easy to make the trip to Havelock Island, but it’s worth it. Catamaran ferries make the 90-minute trip from Port Blair to this beach. Once you arrive, you can see firsthand just how clear the water is for yourself.

10. The Maldives
The Maldives is known for its luxury resorts and lavish accommodations, but it’s also well-known for its gorgeous blue waters. Rent an overwater bungalow in the middle of the Indian Ocean, and you’ll be surrounded by the most beautiful turquoise-colored water.

11. Egremni Beach, Greece
It is a favorite because of the brilliant blue hue of the ocean. The treacherous trek to get there means that Egremnoi Beach isn’t a crowded destination, so you can enjoy the gorgeous views of the gem-colored ocean in peace.

12. Lake Louise, Alberta, Canada
The lake is one of many inside the national park that has turquoise water that you have to see to believe. To up the selling point, this lake is surrounded by jaw-dropping mountains and lush vegetation.

13. Palawan, The Philippines
If the jungle-filled mountains don’t take your breath away, you’ll be in awe once you take a peek at the crystal clear lagoons and picturesque beaches with emerald-colored waters.

Saint Paul de Vence - A Medieval French Village Full of Charm / Provence Alpes Côte d'Azur 4K UHD

The impressive list of stars who have their home in Saint Paul de Vence includes:
