Today, I would be taking a day trip to see the Leshan Giant Buddha, built more than 1200 years ago and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. I would be using high speed train from Chengdu to Leshan and then using the ferry to get a closer view of the Giant Buddha. After that, I would be trying some local food at a food street, before making my way back to Chengdu in the evening.

Leshan Giant Buddha - History of Leshan Buddha - UNESCO World Heritage Site - Amazing Places. Leshan Giant Buddha is located in Leshan City, Sichuan Province, China. It is the place where Buddhism was first established in Chinese territory. Leshan Giant Buddha is carved into a steep face made of red sandstone. It is the world's largest stone Buddha statue at 233 feet tall.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a UNESCO World Heritage Site symbolizing China's rich Buddhist heritage. The statue is well known for its size and scale, as well as its detailed craftsmanship with intricate features and expressions.
Visitors come from different countries of the world. Visitors can explore the surrounding area, which includes temples, pagodas and scenic views of rivers and mountains. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a must-see destination for those interested in Buddhism and ancient Chinese culture, offering a unique and awe-inspiring experience.
During the ancient Tang Dynasty, the waters at the confluence of the three rivers were very violent and boats often capsized there. In 713, a monk named Hai Tong decided to carve a statue of Maitreya Buddha above the river.
Leshan Giant Buddha took 90 years to complete, ending in 803. Mukti's toes are 27 feet long and the shoulders are 92 feet which looks like a basketball court. The ear is 23 feet tall and made of wood covered with mud.
The statue was originally housed in a 13-story wooden structure but was destroyed during the Ming Dynasty. It has suffered damage over time due to erosion and air pollution. Vegetation and fungi have grown on some parts of the statue and the nose has been blackened by acid rain.
However, repair and preservation efforts are ongoing, with a major restoration project completed in 2019. The giant Buddha sits in the open air and the weather in Leshan is humid. You must be curious why the giant Buddha is so well preserved in natural conditions.
The secret is its innovative design. There is a subtle and invisible drainage system that played an important role in protecting the Giant Buddha from decay.
To see the Leshan Giant Buddha, you need to visit the city of Leshan in Sichuan Province, China. Some common ways to reach here are by bus or train. It takes 1 to 1.5 hours by train and 2 to 2.5 hours by bus to visit the Buddha, which is about 130 km from Leshan city.
The Shan Giant Buddha is not just a statue, it is an important symbol of Buddhism and a part of Chinese culture. It is a symbol of Buddhist tolerance and humanity, built for the peace and prosperity of the place.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a remarkable architectural feat and an important landmark in Chinese Buddhist history and culture. In 1996, the Leshan Giant Buddha and its surroundings were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Leshan Giant Buddha is one of the landmarks of Sichuan province's natural and cultural resources. The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue of Maitreya Buddha, known as the Future Buddha in Buddhism.

We start our day very early with breakfast in our hotel, the Crowne Plaza Chengdu City Centre before getting a taxi to Chengdu Train Station.
We board a high speed train to Leshan, today we are travelling in First Class and the journey time is just under one hour.
We arrive at Leshan and get a taxi to the Leshan Buddha.
The Leshan Giant Buddha is a 71-metre tall stone statue, built between 713 and 803. It is carved out of a cliff face that lies at the confluence of the Min River and Dadu River in the southern part of Sichuan Province in China, near the city of Leshan, China.
We spend all morning at the Leshan Buddha and even climbed down to the steps to stand at the feet of the buddha, after a very long wait.
We then go to the Oriental Buddha Capital.
Open to public in 1994, Oriental Buddha Capital is only 1km from Leshan Giant Buddha. Covering an area of over 20,000 m2, Oriental Buddha Capital is a stone carving theme park, which combines religious art, sculpture art and garden art together. The park has modeled over 3000 Buddha statues with different materials, including rock, bronze, clay and jade. The whole park represents the art style of Chinese Buddhism and Southeast Asia Buddhism. The park has a 170-meter-long sleeping Buddha statue, which is the largest and longest sleeping Buddha statue in the world.
We then leave the Leshan Scenic Area and get a taxi to the station and then a train back to Chengdu.
In Chengdu we get to experience an authentic Hot Pot for the first time before settling in for the night back at our hotel.
