Le Puy Camino: Le Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Alban | Part 1 (Via Podiensis)

Follow along as we walk over 1500 km on our longest Camino yet — the Via Podiensis — from Le Puy-en-Velay, France to Santiago de Compostela, Spain.

We started the Via Podiensis (Le Puy Camino) on August 7, 2023, spending 28 days walking in France, arriving at Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port on September 3rd. From there, we continued on the Camino Frances, arriving in Santiago on September 29th.

This is our first time walking the Via Podiensis and our second time on the Camino Frances. We have hiked several other Camino routes in Spain including the Camino Primitivo (May 2023), Camino de Invierno (March 2023), the Camino del Norte (July 2019), and the Camino Frances (September 2017). We packed ultralight bags for all of our journeys.

Favourite Camino: Le Puy en Velay | CaminoWays.com

CaminoWays.com staff members get asked quite regularly about their favourite Camino de Santiago spots or places along the way. With this in mind, we are starting a new series of blog posts by each member of the team, where we share one particular place on the Camino that is special to us. To start the series we have Roland Monsegu, CaminoWays.com director. His chosen Camino spot is Le Puy en Velay.

A Day in Spectacular & Historic Le Puy en Velay, France

Le Puy is the traditional start of the St. James de Compostela pilgrimage along with the Robert Louis Stevenson trail (Chemin de Stevenson) that we are attempting. But even without that, there are festivals, narrow streets, and photogenic 10th century sights to see.

The two volcanic plugs are visually spectacular and I don't know how anyone ever was able to build on them.

Do you dream of sleeping in an almost 1000-year-old castle or would you like to pet a pig or a saved horse?
The castle of Durianne is all of this at the same time.

A little History...
Coming from the hands of the Polignacs and the famous adventurer Joseph de Fonfrède, a great friend of Gérard de Nerval, the castle of Durianne entered the Balme du Garay family in 1836. Full of energy and courage, the lady of the manor and her family set about restoring the house. A difficult choice had to be made because they wanted to change as little as possible. They had to make a difficult decision about installing modern comfort while retaining the charm of the 19th century.
The family is proud to have resisted the sirens of modernism and excessive consumerism. Françoise created guest rooms in order to finance part of the work she does for animals.

We are Yuri and Julia, the travel couple, and we love exploring Europe.

Le Puy Camino. La-Puy-en-Velay to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, with CaminoWays.com. All 6 sections.

LE PUY WAY – CHEMIN DU PUY
The Le Puy Way GR65 Chemin du Puy in French or Via Podiensis in Latin (#viapodiensis), starts in the breathtaking town of Le Puy-en-Velay, close to Lyon, in France. This is the most popular of the Camino de Santiago routes in France. Both the Geneva Way and the Cluny Way connect with the Le Puy Way at Le Puy-en-Velay while the route joins up with the French Way Camino Francés, in Saint-Jean-Pied de Port, on the French side of the Pyrenees. The Le Puy route is a superb hike through stunning countryside and some of the most beautiful towns in France. The volcanic landscapes of Velay, the Aubrac plateau, the towns of Conques and Quercy, the splendid vineyards of Armagnac brandy and the outstanding Pyrenees Mountains are some of its highlights. Read more Le Puy Way Camino articles on our blog.

The full Le Puy Way takes just over 1 month to complete or you can choose to walk one of the sections.
