Lathrop State Park
Hiking, cycling, and kayaking in Lathrop State Park and the surrounding area from October 7th to 10th, 2020. Hiked Hogback Nature Trail inside the park and Dike Trail 1389 outside the park. Cycled around Martin Lake and over to Horseshoe Lake inside the park. Kayaked on Martin Lake. Drove part of the Highway of Legends Scenic Byway.

Lathrop, Missouri - Former Mule Capital of the World!

“Lathrop is a city in Clinton County, Missouri, and is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area within the United States. The population was 2,086 at the 2010 census.
Lathrop was platted in 1867 as a stop on the Cameron Cutoff Branch of the Hannibal and St. Joseph Railroad. It was named for John L. Lathrop, treasurer for the railorad. A post office called Lathrop has been in operation since 1868.
In the early 1900s it was considered the Mule Capital of the World after the firm of Guyton and Harrington sold 180,000 mules and 170,000 horses to the British Army during World War I. The cousins J.D. Guyton and W.R. Harrington owned 4,700 acres near Lathrop. They also supplied mules to the British during the Boer War. Among the facilities in Lathrop were three barns stabling 1,000 mules each and a 496 foot long hay barn. The British had a formal contract for a remount station in Lathrop. The business had facilities at 17th and Wyandotte in Kansas City and had a shipping port facilities at Chalmette, Louisiana. The mule business collapsed in the 1920s. There are several businesses in Lathrop that include mule in their name now and a road east of town is called Mule Barn Road. The mascot of the high school team is the mules.”

It's July and 95 degrees at Lathrop State Park, so a one hour drive put us at 11,248' and 70 degree weather. We also checked out the old Cuchara Mountain Ski Resort.

South Deering, located on Chicago's far South Side, is the largest of the 77 official community areas of that city. Primarily an industrial area, a small residential neighborhood exists in the northeast corner and Lake Calumet takes up a large portion of the area. 80% of the community area is zoned as industrial, natural wetlands, or parks. The remaining 20% is zoned for residential and small-scale commercial uses. It is part of the 10th Ward, once under the control of former Richard J. Daley ally Alderman Edward Vrdolyak.
The neighborhood is named for Charles Deering, an executive in the Deering Harvester Company that would later form a major part of International Harvester. International Harvester owned Wisconsin Steel, which was originally established in 1875 and was located along Torrence Avenue south of 106th Street to 109th Street.
It is the location of Calumet Fisheries, a historic seafood restaurant that opened in 1928 and has been featured on Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations. The original Calumet Bakery store, a South Side favorite since 1935, is located at 2510 E 106th St, Chicago, IL 60617. It was also the location of the Wisconsin Steel Works, originally the Joseph H. Brown Iron and Steel Company, which opened in 1875 and closed in 1980. Since the closing of the steel mill, the neighborhood has remained economically depressed.
Louis Rosen documented the racial transition of this and nearby communities in his 1998 book The South Side: The Racial Transformation of an American Neighborhood.
Lakeview, also spelled Lake View, is one of the 77 community areas of Chicago, Illinois. Lakeview is located in the city's North Side. It is bordered by West Diversey Parkway on the south, West Irving Park Road on the north, North Ravenswood Avenue on the west, and the shore of Lake Michigan on the east. The Uptown community area is to Lakeview's north, Lincoln Square to its northwest, North Center to its west, and Lincoln Park to its south. The 2020 population of Lakeview was 103,050 residents, making it the second largest of the Chicago community areas by population.
Lakeview includes smaller neighborhood enclaves: Sheridan Station Corridor, Northhalsted, Southport Corridor, Wrigleyville, and Wrigley Plaza. Boystown, famous for its large LGBT population, which holds a pride parade each June. Wrigleyville is another popular district. It surrounds Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs. Lakeview is home to the Belmont Theater District showcasing over 30 theaters and live performance venues located near the Belmont L station. In 2013, Money Magazine named Lakeview as the number three of its top ten big-city neighborhoods for its selection of the Best Places to Live.
Julia C. Lathrop Homes is a Chicago Housing Authority (CHA) public housing project located along the line between the Lincoln Park and North Center neighborhoods on the north side of Chicago, Illinois, United States. It is bordered by the neighborhoods of Bucktown and Roscoe Village. Completed in 1938 by the Public Works Administration, Lathrop Homes was one of the first Chicago public housing projects. Lathrop Homes was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2012 and is currently undergoing restoration. Lathrop Homes consists of two-story brick row houses and three- and four-story apartment buildings separated by landscaped courtyards and linked by small archways in a campus-like arrangement. There are a total of 925 units on 35.5 acres of land (approximately three and a half square blocks).
Sprawling West Town contains a busy stretch of West Chicago Avenue, dotted with New American restaurants and cafes. The Wicker Park area is known for cool global dining, live music bars, and boutiques, while in the Ukrainian Village, the Ukrainian Institute of Modern Art hosts varied cultural events. Featuring a lagoon with a beach, Humboldt Park is also home to the National Museum of Puerto Rican Arts and Culture.
