The Philippines is a Southeast Asian country in the Western Pacific, comprising more than 7,000 islands. Its capital, Manila, is famous for its waterfront promenade and centuries-old Chinatown, Binondo. Intramuros, a walled city in colonial times, is the heart of Old Manila. It’s home to the baroque 17th-century San Agustin Church as well as Fort Santiago, a storied citadel and military prison.

SIBANG COVE | The most iconic tourist spot of Calayan Island, Cagayan

THE LAST ECOLOGICAL FRONTIER OF CAGAYAN
📌 Sibang, Calayan Group of Islands

That's true, Calayan and all the northern islands remain pristine, tantalizingly out of reach for most mass travelers. Its remoteness, the weather and the treacherous open seas remain as the primary defenses of this paradisiacal realm.

But honestly, Calayan today is less daunting to visit than 100 to 50 years ago. Its shores became more accessible as cumbersome skiffs and rafts are replaced by swift ferries and planes.

Its bewildering wild coasts have been outlined, its terrains mapped, its delicate waters navigated and its forests and mountains have become more fragile than once imagined.

Featured here is the pristine Sibang Cove, the most prominent identifying icon of Calayan Island.

Magandang araw! (Good day!)

I'm Reymund Lara, a passionate Filipino educator currently on a thrilling adventure in Japan! From October 2023 to March 2025, I'm expanding my knowledge as a MEXT Teacher Training Scholar. This program allows me to refine my Filipino language skills at Tokushima University and delve into educational research at Naruto University of Education.

My journey as an educator began over a decade ago, teaching elementary school in my hometown of Passi City, Iloilo. Fueled by a desire to connect cultures, I also shared the beauty of the Filipino language and culture as a Fulbright Scholar at a university in Spokane, Washington (USA) from 2020-2021.

Witnessing the global interest in Filipino languages, I founded Learn Filipino with Reymund. This channel provides students with a strong foundation in Filipino before diving into our interactive online classes.

Currently in Japan (Oct 2023 - Mar 2025) as a MEXT Teacher Training Scholar! I'm enriching my knowledge through Japanese language (Nihongo) classes at Tokushima University and educational research at Naruto University of Education. When I'm not busy learning, I love exploring the beauty of Japan and soaking up the everyday life here.

TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, Philippines

Tuguegarao City is the capital of the province of Cagayan, Philippines. It is the regional center of Cagayan Valley (Region II), dubbed as Your Islands and Valley of Fun.

Tuguegarao City is called the “Gateway to the Ilocandia and the Cordilleras,”.

Tuguegarao City is located 483 kilometres (300 mi) north of Manila, which is an hour by plane and ten hours of land travel.

This video containing the tourist destinations in Tuguegarao City and some from its neighboring towns in the province of Cagayan was taken during The Grand North Luzon Fun Caravan organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association, Inc. (PHILTOA) in cooperation with the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB) of the Department of Tourism (DOT).

KIMMANDELA ROCK FORMATIONS | Dipari Island (AKA Panultan Panuitan Is.), Calayan Is., Cagayan

Discovering the unknown...

THE MYSTICAL ISLAND OF DIPARI
📌 Balintang Channel, Calayan Island, Cagayan

FOREWORD:
Ito ang ating buhay. Kung nasaan ang mga panganib ay naroon din ang ating sarili. Sapagkat sa mundong ito, ay walang tunay na kaligtasan hanggang sa oras na ika'y pumailanlang sa kaitaasan...

My supposed travel to the volcanic island of Babuyan to witness the breaching of humpback whales and to purposefully summit the peak of Babuyan Claro Volcano was halted by the disturbance of weather patterns and thus, clearance from the Coast Guard didn't pursue. I found myself rather stranded in an island north of Dilam called Dipari.

The extreme weather and the unpredictable stance of the sea have robbed Dipari Island of some of its popularity but the enchantment on this uninhabited island remains as lovely as when the first sailors discovered this out-of-the-planet landscape. Masterworks of nature had sculpted million years old giant mystifying sea stacks also called by the Calayanos as kimmandela or candle-like tower rock formations that still cast spells of beguilement to the rare spectators who come to visit them.

There are more than a dozen of these towering spires staggering at different sizes and half of those are about 30 meters high or more, the tallest could possibly reach nearly 100 meters. These monuments serve as silent sentinels to the island located on its northern tip to which they directly face the immense bodies of water called the Balintang and Bashi Channels, and to where the next major landmass to stumble is Taiwan.

You cannot find Dipari Island on the maps but instead, it is charted in Google Maps as Panuitan Island (variety or misspelled as Panultan Island), still roughly 8 kilometers from the nearest point of Dilam, in Batang Peninsula. The water surrounding the island is hostile and constantly into unrest mode yet, it evokes the powerful aquamarine blue of aquarium seas that harbor benison of rich marine resources.

Dipari is as dangerous as it is alluring. Its waters are deep and its shores are rocky endlessly rammed by the raging surfs of the Pacific and South China Sea. Its domain reminds me of the volcanic islands of Hawaii and its stretch of white beach, the Waikiki. We feasted on various shellfish and seafoods as strange as the chiton and abolone we previously collected in Dipari's kadilian or tidal flats as our gastronomic palates mutated from ordinary to exotic.

True, much of this peculiar island remains immaculate out of reach for most tourists. Remoteness and weather remain primary defenses of this realm and it's not easy to imagine a resort on this island which has been called the wildest place in Calayan. But, though strongly defended by the weather and the sea, Dipari is slowly being attainable only by the intrepid; those who are in dire need of exploring the great outdoors, even though it took us three days to tame the sea before we could do our conquest.

TUAOEN FALLS: An Anomaly of Nature | San Miguel, Santa Praxedes, Cagayan Tourist Spot

DISCOVERED BUT NOT REVEALED

It was the high drama of scenes taking place in this very fragile ecosystem that keeps me coming back into the call of the wild -anywhere where I can see green or blue; the forests and mountains or the beaches and islands. Yet, I seldom going back to the same place to where I first captured life's chronicles; seldom but not never.
I prefer the remote, the paths less trekked, the road less traveled, the mountains- at least parts of it that are uncharted, and the impenetrable woodlands still to the least extent or if lucky, without any vestige of human touch. I believe these parts of the tropical biomes pack more extreme adventures and lethal excitements than what the common, easy-reached places could beacon. I go to where I feel most active because what doesn't kill me just makes me more alive..
About half an hour ride from Claveria known to be the coastal paradise of the north where I stayed the previous night, I reached the 25-meter single drop Portabaga Falls, Santa Praxedes town's prime tourism magnet. I have been here, previously; the municipality's magnific coves, white beaches, protected rainforests and angelic water falls - all accomplished in a span of eight months.

Truly, Santa Praxedes is an anomaly of the delicate nature. The municipality is the melting pot of 3 massive regions adjoining the Ilocandia, the Cordillera and the Cagayan Valley - a place where variety of peoples, cultures, or individuals assimilate into a cohesive whole.

A staggering 70% of tropical rainforest still blankets this least populous municipality of Cagayan; a third of it is part of the Kalbario- Patapat Key Biodiversity Area (KBA), a protected haven for endemic bird species, tree frogs and dozens of fern species not found anywhere else. Santa Praxedes is also one of the coastal towns of Cagayan that does not have direct road access to its seacoast due to the high mountains surrounding it. These bizarre characteristics make Santa Praxedes truly an anomaly.

Geographically extending into the Babuyan Channel, Santa Praxedes is the crowning jewel of the Cordillera mountain range as she sits northernmost to her grandest throne. The immense mountains that surround her harbour undisclosed, uncelebrated but stunning waterfalls and clean rivers.

On our way, a volatile ferny air surrounded our trails as we swept our paths among fern groves. There is excitement in the sounds of the stream, crashing onto the slippery black to liver-colored rocks and the rustling leaves of the sarakat pines swaying in harmony with the forest breeze. Sarakat is a family of pandan plant used in weaving local stuffs like bay-on, lagpi, kattukong, pitaka, kamen, payabyab or even elegant gown.

We reached the first tier of Tuaoen Falls in an hour with sidelines of thousand clicks along the way. I almost shot hundred at a single scene, angled at it a dozen times, delete another hundreds and save just one photo per scene.
The falls is relatively short compared to the commanding prowess of Portabaga, the mystifying Likid Falls, or the towering Bilbilagot - all shining waterfall gems of Santa Praxedes of different attributes of allure.
The second level, not that far from the first; about some sarakat groves away is lovelier with its wider platform at 10-meters tall with fast moving, voluminous water.
I was so fascinated the way the water flows, broken by rocks from its slope, creating a misty environ that conceives a spectral rainbow upon contact with the suns waning rays that afternoon.

What makes it special for me is its being undiscovered. For me, as I assert it again, it is always been great to be the first, if not among the firsts; the very few firsts.
It's not all about feeding our egoistic tendency but rather, it's all about our delicate chance to see the most raw, the most beautiful, the most natural and the most untouched form of that wonderful place taken into account before they could be vandalized, defaced or humanized.

The Tuaoen Falls is still shy. Discovered but not revealed. Seen but not given the chance to shine for itself. I do. I have not surfed any documented photos, at least decent snaps of the aloof Tuaoen Falls; both in Google and in any social media world, and so I did put it to where it deserved. I chose the right thing- to reaveal it. Not for people to abuse it: vandalized, defaced, dehumanized; but driven by my passion to make the beautiful world be apparently visible to everyone despite the ugliness we see in this world: pride, anger, selfishness, ungodliness. Who shall do if not us; the spectator, the appreciator, the nature advocate?
Not so many of us leave home for wilderness and convinced that we can conquer the world around us. The intrepid explorers do. While it is always difficult to craft our own rules of being independent, as said my life, my rules, we know we can do better, make it bolder, only if we continue to roam into the wild and into the great outdoors undaunted.
