Tour of the Famous Saint-Émilion, France

Tour of the famous St-Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site and centre of the best-known Bordeaux appellations. Then on to Château Beau-Sejour-Becot, producer of premier and grand crus wines, for a tour and tasting.

Bordeaux, with 247,000 acres, is a wine-producing area three times the size of Burgundy. Bordeaux is the largest fine wine-making region in the world, as well as the most legendary. More than half the fine wines of the world come from France and about half of these are from Bordeaux.

Although the reputation is built mostly on red wines, especially those from the Médoc, St-Èmilion and Pomerol districts, the region produces the entire gamut of wines, including dry and sweet whites, and rosés.

What is hotel barging?

Despite the growing popularity of cruising, especially on large river vessels, hotel barging is still a little known niche concept. Most hotel barges started life as cargo vessels but have since been painstakingly converted to offer luxury boutique accommodation for small groups of up to 20 passengers.

This is cruising, but in a very different style to ships plying the big rivers or oceans. The pace is slow, with a 6 day cruise covering maybe just 50 miles along a rural canal. Passengers can walk or bike the towpaths as their floating hotel glides gently along. Guests enjoy an intimate atmosphere, high levels of personal service and immersion into the culture, history and gastronomy of regions of Europe such as Burgundy, the Midi, or the Italian Veneto.

Every day there is an excursion, perhaps to a chateau, a vineyard for a wine tasting, or some other ‘off the beaten track’ location. About half of European Waterways’ bookings are for whole boat charters, ideal for families. Otherwise, clients book a cabin to join other like-minded people. A ‘slow boat’ European Waterways barge cruise offers the ultimate in experiential travel. A truly unique experience!

European Waterways offer luxury hotel barge cruises on the beautiful canals and rivers of Europe, such as through Burgundy, the Midi, Alsace, the Po Valley, Holland and the Scottish Highlands.

The exclusive collection of hotel barges accommodate up to 20 passengers who may charter a whole barge with family or friends, or join a small group of like-minded travellers on an individual cabin basis.

Each barge is fully crewed with a Captain, chef, hostesses, deck-hand and tour guide. The 6-night cruises include gourmet meals, fine wines, open bar, excursions and the use of facilities such as bicycles and spa pools.

Where to play, where to stay in the Bordeaux wine region of France

We've discovered where to stay in Saint Emilion to sample the relaxed French lifestyle.

Lorraine recently sampled Yelloh! Village Saint-Emilion - a campsite with a difference - luxury accommodations on site...

It certainly wasn’t long until I slipped into holiday mode after checking in at Yelloh! Village in Saint-Emilion, in the Bordeaux wine region of southwest France. Lounging on resort, I enjoyed some relaxation in my spacious premium cottage and terrace, sampled good wine and enjoyed drinking in the serene woodland and lake views.

Saint-Emilion is just one hour from the city of Bordeaux and combined with regular flights from the UK, it’s a convenient option for a long weekend wine break or a longer escape.

Yelloh! Village Saint-Emilion may be a campsite, with pitches for tents and caravans, but it also has some stylish options for affordable luxury travellers.

The peaceful woodland surroundings and birdsong allowed me to escape from the everyday world, which was rather novel following a few hectic weeks of work and travel.

This all prepared me for a day of adventure in the nearby town that lies at the heart of this famous wine region. Less than ten minutes away by resort shuttle, Saint-Emilion is a charming medieval town, laden with 17 historic limestone moments and an overwhelming number of restaurants and shops celebrating the region’s finest exports: wine and macarons. To revel in culture, gastronomy and history in equal measure, make Saint-Emilion your next affordable luxury camping adventure.

I would definitely recommend you consider a bit of vineyard hopping to sample the region's finest grape varieties and break the walk up, before a bit of sightseeing and a late lunch in Saint-Emilion.

Look out for our post on things to see and do in Saint-Emilion in the Bordeaux wine region - coming soon. In the meantime don't miss our review of Yelloh! Village Saint-Emilion:

BORDEAUX - France Travel Guide | Around The World

Bordeaux is a port city on the Garonne River in the Gironde department in southwestern France.

The municipality (commune) of Bordeaux proper has a population of 246,586 (2014). Together with its suburbs and satellite towns, Bordeaux is the centre of the Bordeaux Métropole. With 760,933 inhabitants (as of 2014) and 1,195,335 in the metropolitan area, it is the sixth largest in France, after Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Toulouse and Lille. It is the capital of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, as well as the prefecture of the Gironde department. Its inhabitants are called Bordelais (for men) or Bordelaises (women). The term Bordelais may also refer to the city and its surrounding region.

Bordeaux is the world's major wine industry capital. It is home to the world's main wine fair, Vinexpo, and the wine economy in the metro area takes in 14.5 billion euros each year. Bordeaux wine has been produced in the region since the 8th century. The historic part of the city is on the UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble of the 18th century. After Paris, Bordeaux has the highest number of preserved historical buildings of any city in France.

Bordeaux is classified City of Art and History. The city is home to 362 monuments historiques (only Paris has more in France) with some buildings dating back to Roman times. Bordeaux has been inscribed on UNESCO World Heritage List as an outstanding urban and architectural ensemble.

Bordeaux is home to one of Europe's biggest 18th-century architectural urban areas, making it a sought-after destination for tourists and cinema production crews. It stands out as one of the first French cities, after Nancy, to have entered an era of urbanism and metropolitan big scale projects, with the team Gabriel father and son, architects for King Louis XV, under the supervision of two intendants (Governors), first Nicolas-François Dupré de Saint-Maur then the Marquis de Tourny.

Bordeaux is also the first city in France to have created, in the 1980s, an architecture exhibition and research centre, Arc en rêve.[citation needed] Bordeaux offers a large number of cinemas, theatres, and is the home of the Opéra national de Bordeaux. There are many music venues of varying capacity. The city also offers several festivals throughout the year.

Bordeaux is served by Bordeaux–Mérignac Airport, located 8 km (5.0 mi) from the city center in the suburban city of Mérignac.

The main railway station, Gare de Bordeaux Saint-Jean, near the center of the city, has 12 million passengers a year. It is served by the French national (SNCF) railway's high speed train, the TGV, that gets to Paris in two hours, with connections to major European centers such as Lille, Brussels, Amsterdam, Cologne, Geneva and London. The TGV also serves Toulouse and Irun (Spain) from Bordeaux. A regular train service is provided to Nantes, Nice, Marseille and Lyon. The Gare Saint-Jean is the major hub for regional trains (TER) operated by the SNCF to Arcachon, Limoges, Agen, Périgueux, Langon, Pau, Le Médoc, Angoulême and Bayonne.

Bordeaux is an important road and motorway junction. The city is connected to Paris by the A10 motorway, with Lyon by the A89, with Toulouse by the A62, and with Spain by the A63. There is a 45 km (28 mi) ring road called the Rocade which is often very busy. Another ring road is under consideration.

The 42,115-capacity Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux is the largest stadium in Bordeaux. The stadium was opened in 2015 and replaced the Stade Chaban-Delmas, which was a venue for the FIFA World Cup in 1938 and 1998, as well as the 2007 Rugby World Cup. In the 1938 FIFA World Cup, it hosted a violent quarter-final known as the Battle of Bordeaux. The ground was formerly known as the Stade du Parc Lescure until 2001, when it was renamed in honour of the city's long-time mayor, Jacques Chaban-Delmas.
