YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK (2023) | Best Things To Do In Yellowstone + Travel Tips

Yellowstone National Park is a huge area. It spans almost 3,500 miles or 5,600 km across the state of Wyoming, and extends into parts of both Montana and Idaho. Established in 1872, it’s America’s first national park and to this day it also remains one of the largest and most popular ones in the country. In fact, Yellowstone sits on top of a dormant volcano and is home to more hydrothermal features than anywhere else on earth. On top of that, the park is home to diverse landscapes and activities. From lush valleys with an abundance of wildlife, to spectacular canyons and waterfalls you can hike to, deep lakes, and rivers for fishing. In this video, we highlight 10 of the best things to do in the park.

Top 5 things to do in Yellowstone National Park

Lamar Valley and Trout Lake in Yellowstone National Park - Park Travel Review

We have visited Yellowstone National Park 6 times. One of our favorite must do places for our trips there is Lamar Valley with a stop at Trout Lake. We enjoy all of the wildlife watching there. The scenery isn't bad either. (Ha!) The Trout Lake Trail is not considered easy there is some elevation change, but the pay off is wonderful!
Tips for watching wildlife from the NPS:
Wild animals are unpredictable and dangerous. Every year people are injured when they approach animals too closely. Animals that attack people may need to be relocated or killed. To protect yourself and the animals you come to watch, always remain at least 100 yards (91 meters) from bears or wolves, and at least 25 yards (23 meters) from all other wildlife.

The following tips will keep you and park animals safe:
Never approach or pursue an animal to take its picture: use binoculars or telephoto lenses to get a better view.
If an animal moves closer to you, back away to maintain a safe distance.
If you cause an animal to move, you're too close. It's illegal to willfully remain near or approach wildlife, including birds, within any distance that disturbs or displaces the animal.
Park in roadside pullouts when watching/photographing animals: do not block traffic.
Stay in or next to your car when watching bears. If a bear approaches or touches your car, honk your horn and drive away to discourage this behavior.

At Happy Trails Hiking, we encourage you to live the life you love and seek solace and adventure in America’s Parks and Public Lands. We strive to motivate and inspire people through travel as well as fitness and nutrition.
