Discovering history and tranquility at Wagang (Sipaia) Beach in Lae, Papua New Guinea
Welcome to Wagang (Sipaia) Beach in Lae, a beloved picnic destination for the residents of Lae.
Nestled amidst the memories of the 1970s and 1980s, Sipaia Beach was a cherished playground for us Lae kids, offering pristine shores and endless swimming adventures.
The name Sipaia originates from Tok Pisin and translates to ship on fire, a poignant reminder of the Myoko Maru, a Japanese ship that met its fate during World War II. This vessel fell victim to Australian and US air attacks, eventually grounding itself in this very spot.
Back in the 1970s and 1980s, we used to swim out to the wreck of the Myoko Maru, an activity that's sadly no longer possible today.
On January 6, 1943, the Myoko Maru embarked on a journey from Rabaul as part of a convoy accompanied by three other transports, a light cruiser, and four destroyers. Along the way, it was spotted by Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) aircraft and came under attack from US 43rd Bombardment Group (BG) B-17 bombers.
As night fell on January 7, 1942, the convoy reached Lae, where further attacks ensued, though their success remained uncertain. It was during this time that a single P-40 Warhawk from the US 49th Fighter Group dropped a 300 lbs bomb, achieving a direct hit at 2.10 PM and disabling the ship's engine. Consequently, the Myoko Maru found its final resting place at Wagang Beach, across from the Bumbu River, on January 8, 1943.
Despite the passage of time, the allure of Sipaia Beach endures, inviting visitors to explore its rich history and enjoy the serene beauty it offers to this day.
