Kuche Grand Canyon|Xinjiang, China
The Kuche Grand Canyon, also known as Kuche Great Canyon or Kuche Keziliya Grand Canyon, is a scenic attraction located in the Kuche County of the Aksu Prefecture in Xinjiang, China. It is situated in the northern part of the Tarim Basin and is renowned for its stunning red rock formations and deep canyons.
The canyon stretches for about 5 kilometers (3.1 miles) and features towering cliffs, rugged gorges, and unique geological formations. The red sandstone rocks create a striking contrast against the surrounding desert landscape. Visitors to the Kuche Grand Canyon can explore the area by hiking along designated trails or by taking guided tours.
The canyon is relatively remote and less visited compared to other famous attractions in Xinjiang, such as the Tian Shan Mountains or the Kanas Lake. However, its natural beauty and geological features make it an intriguing destination for nature enthusiasts and adventurers.

Shipton’s Arch, also known as “Toshuk Tagh” in the Uyghur language or 阿图什天门 (Ātúshi tiānmén) in Chinese, is considered to be the tallest natural arch in the world and is located in China's western region of Xinjiang near the border with Kyrgyzstan.
How tall is Shipton’s Arch, you ask?
Measured at 457m (roughly 1,500ft), the arch could theoretically fit the Empire State Building, which measures only 443m to the tip of the antennae. It’s hard to tell from the photos, but it is incredibly tall!
What I love about Shipton’s Arch is not only the magnificent beauty of the place, but also the story that led to its discovery…and later it’s rediscovery.
Southern Xinjiang Vlog Day 10: Tianshan Tomur Grand Canyon #travelchina #xinjiang #grandcanyon
There are several officially open Tianshan Grand Canyons within Xinjiang for tourists. One of them is the Kuqa Tianshan Grand Canyon or Kizilya Grand Canyon, which we visited a few days ago. Today, we came to the Wensu Grand Canyon or Tomur Grand Canyon, located northeast of Aksu City, within Wensu County.
You can either drive yourself to Wensu Canyon or take the shuttle bus provided by the scenic area. Since the road inside is over 20 kilometers of gravel, the scenic area recommended against self-driving. After entering, we found that although the road conditions were not ideal, our SUV could have managed it, so we regretted not driving. The shuttle bus limits the journey, causing us to miss many sights we wanted to visit. Thus, we recommend future visitors to drive if possible.
Compared to Kuqa Canyon, Wensu Tomur Canyon is more towering and majestic. The cliffs on both sides and the bumpy sandy road in the canyon add a layer of desolation to the scenery. The rock layers on the canyon walls are clearly distributed, with folds formed by compression, and the curved lines are very distinct. Fractured rocks are embedded within the rock layers, and after billions of years of weathering, they have formed towering cliffs, peculiar peaks, varied shapes, rugged terrain, vivid colors, and a dazzling array of unique landscapes.
We hiked from the Fourth Valley along the undulating trails for two or three hours to reach the Third Valley, from the hot afternoon until after 8 PM when the park closed. Initially, the red mountain rocks were bathed in sunlight, glaringly bright. As the sun gradually moved, by the time we left, only the tops of the cliffs were still glowing, and the canyon was slowly enveloped in darkness. However, when the shuttle bus entered the open area, the world suddenly became clear and bright again, and the vibrant colors of the mountains instantly revived our spirits.
Though we were visually satiated by the canyon, we were utterly exhausted. Arriving at the Aksu night market at midnight, despite its bustle, we had no energy for a detailed stroll and quickly found something to eat before finding a hotel with good air conditioning to rest.
In Xinjiang's summer, the days are long and the nights short, and the weather is hot, so each day's journey ends late, with us eating and strolling late into the night like the locals. After several days of this, traveling day and night, we were inevitably exhausted and in urgent need of rest and recuperation.
Beautiful Bayingbulak Grassland in Xinjiang
Bayanbulak Grassland is located in the mountain basin in the northwest of Hejing County in Xinjiang and in the middle of the Tianshan Mountains. Surrounded by snow mountains, it is about 2,500 meters above sea level and covers an area of 23,835 square kilometers. It is the second-largest grassland in China, second only to Hulun Buir Grassland in Inner Mongolia. Bayanbulak means “abundant spring water” in Mongolian. The grassland has flat terrain and abundant water and grass; it is a typical grass meadow grassland. If you are interested in grassland trips, then it is an amazing place to visit and explore.
