Places to visit in Latvia/
It is dedicated to commemorate the freedom fights of the Livs (the indigenous people of the lower Daugava region) in the 1206 revolt led by Ako from Mārtiņsala (Holme) against the crusaders. Mārtiņsala was a significant centre of the Livs from the 10th to the 13th century; now the island lies below the water level of the power station reservoir. Ako was killed in a battle, and his head was sent to Riga as proof of victory. This is also a place where the first human settlement (Salaspils Laukskola) of late Palaeolithic reindeer hunters was discovered by archaeologists in the early 1970s. A memorial sign for Ako was arranged in 1994, reconstructed in 2013. The site was designed by sculptor Ģ. Burvis; landscape design of the territory established in 2014.

???????? Latvia by Car 1. Unique Places. Madona - Riga. Daugava River. Liepkalni.
???? In this film, you can see what to visit in Latvia in the summer if you drive from Madona to Riga. This time we stopped in two places Kalsnava of Madona County and Liepkalni near Plavinas. Interesting story of Daugava transformation, beautiful flower fields, and history of Liepkalnu Bakery. The Liepkalnu bakery is located on the right bank of the Daugava river in the lower part of Lower Daugava, Klintaines parish, Aizkraukle district, on the right bank of the Daugava near the town of Pļaviņas.
The ancient valley of Daugava is the most transformed natural area in Latvia. It was this section of the Daugava between Pļaviņas and Koknesi that was the most beautiful and powerful. The river flowed in a deep canyon-like valley, and dolomite cliffs up to 15-20 m high were exposed on the banks, the most outstanding of which was Oliņkalns with Andreja crag and on the other side of the river Staburags with Liepavota, boulders, rapids, ravines, and springs.
Now it is all covered by the Pļaviņu HPP water reservoir, only 1-4 m high dolomite walls rise above the normal water level (72 m above sea level), but Olinkalns is now a 350 m long and 130 m wide island.
Staburags is now preserved only in legends and literary works, as well as, of course, in memories and photographs, because it was one of the most popular excursion destinations even 60 years ago. It was. With the construction of the Pļaviņu HPP, Staburags went to the bottom of the Daugava, but the Koknese castle ruins, which once stood on the top of the hill, are now at the water level itself. However, just before the flooding, a large number of excursionists went to say goodbye to the crying Staburaga.
Lokstenes shrine is a shrine opened on May 6, 2017, on the Daugava island near Pļaviņas, which includes the main building, a transfer house, a gathering and flag square, a stone image, and the Gate of the Sun. It is named after the nearby flooded Lokstenes mound. The shrine is managed by the Latvijas Dievturi Sadraudze, which organizes events for the gods, as well as the Latvian calendar and national holidays.
About Liepkalni bakery
We always stop here to drink coffee, eat lunch, and buy freshly baked bread or dried meat on the spot. Many passers-by do, but do they know how this place came to be. I researched it.
Before the war in Latvia, bread was baked in every farmstead, including in the house of Liepkalni, where during the Latvian period in Naukšēnu parish, a good landlord, Jānis Mendziņš, farmed. He owned a large, well-kept farm Liepkalni, which was established in 1928. Rye and barley were sown in Liepkalni fields. In the fall, the golden grains that have fallen in the mill are milled: rye - for rye bread, barley - for karasha.
On Saturdays, the hostess, tying a white scarf around her head, mixed the bread in the abra, lit the big bread oven, and put the big, round loaves of bread in the oven with a wooden spoon. Soon the whole farm smelled temptingly of fresh bread.
Owner Jānis always kissed the first cut piece. The owner of Liepkalni knew her special techniques, and recipes she had collected over the years, according to which the baked bread was especially soft and filling. Self-grown linseeds, pumpkin seeds, and cumin were also added to the bread.
In 1992, brothers Dagnis and Didzis Čākuri established the farm Liepkalni in Naukšēni parish near the border of Estonia, recovering their grandfather's land - 42 hectares and started growing grain.
From the grain he grew, he began to bake bread not only for his family but for the surrounding parishes.
In January 2006, they solemnly opened another bakery equipped with the latest technology in Liepsala - on the banks of the Daugava near Pļaviņas in Klintaines parish. This bakery, which is under the same roof as a shop and a cafe, is popular with many motorists on kilometer 117 of the Daugava highway. Us too.

DAUGAVAS LOKI - Scenic area in Latgale, Latvia | Drone footage
This is my 4K UHD drone footage of the DAUGAVAS LOKI nature park filmed near 3 locations: Vasargelišķu skatu tornis, Lazdukalnu skatu tornis and Lielbornes muiža. It is a beautiful iconic area with a valley that is located in Latgale (Southeast region of Latvia), located between Daugavpils and Kraslava cities. Some years ago there were plans to build a hydroelectric plant but currently these are not actual anymore and we can enjoy the scenery.
This has been a DJI Mavic mini drone that was used to capture 4K 30 fps footage. Enjoy!

Nature Park on the island! ???? Liktendarzs. Located in ???????? Koknese, Latvia
Likteņdārzs is a symbol created in nature. It indicates continuous recovery and growth of the nation — this is where both human and state history, the present and future meet. Likteņdārzs, not unlike the Monument of Freedom, is created thanks to donations. It has been planned as a gift from the nation for the centenary of the Latvian Republic.
Excellent environmental architecture has been combined with the beauty of the Koknese peninsula and the flow of River Daugava. Likteņdārzs is comprised of an alley of apple trees and a cobblestone road that lees to an amphitheatre surrounded by oak trees, as well as a virtual memorial home with a digital trail and the Big Hill. A multifunctional public building is currently under construction. You can also spend time on a terrace, which provides beautiful views of Daugava and Koknese church. Also fascinating are the Sirdsakmens (Heart Stones) and other similar objects. Likteņdārzs is a favourite destination for tourists, families and wedding parties. It is also a great place for organising various culture and leisure events.
Nature and cultural sights in Latvia
Latvia was so much to offer for all culture and nature lovers. Starting with Palšu bog, Lielstraupes and Jaunmoku castles, Mežaparks, Ķemeru national park and ending with Koknese and Ineša lake. MAP OF RIGA LATVIA
salutations my friends. this is a map of Riga , Latvia. The river Daugava has been a trade route since antiquity, part of the Vikings' Dvina–Dnieper navigation route to Byzantium. A sheltered natural harbour 15 km (9.3 mi) upriver from the mouth of the Daugava—the site of today's Riga—has been recorded, as Duna Urbs, as early as the 2nd century. It was settled by the Livs, a Finnic tribe.
The building of the Brotherhood of Blackheads is one of the most iconic buildings of Old Riga (Vecrīga).
Riga began to develop as a centre of Viking trade during the early Middle Ages. Riga's inhabitants occupied themselves mainly with fishing, animal husbandry, and trading, later developing crafts (in bone, wood, amber, and iron).
The Livonian Chronicle of Henry testifies to Riga having long been a trading centre by the 12th century, referring to it as portus antiquus (ancient port), and describes dwellings and warehouses used to store mostly flax, and hides. German traders began visiting Riga, establishing a nearby outpost in 1158. excuse me. please comment about Riga. continuing.
Along with German traders the monk Meinhard of Segeberg arrived to convert the Livonian pagans to Christianity. Catholic and Orthodox Christianity had already arrived in Latvia more than a century earlier, and many Latvians had been baptised. Meinhard settled among the Livs, building a castle and church at Uexküll (now known as Ikšķile), upstream from Riga, and established his bishopric there. The Livs, however, continued to practice paganism and Meinhard died in Uexküll in 1196, having failed in his mission. In 1198, the Bishop Berthold arrived with a contingent of crusaders and commenced a campaign of forced Christianisation. Berthold died soon afterwards and his forces were defeated.
The Church mobilised to avenge this defeat. Pope Innocent III issued a bull declaring a crusade against the Livonians. Bishop Albert was proclaimed Bishop of Livonia by his uncle Hartwig of Uthlede, Prince-Archbishop of Bremen and Hamburg in 1199. Albert landed in Riga in 1200 with 23 ships and 500 Westphalian crusaders. In 1201, he transferred the seat of the Livonian bishopric from Uexküll to Riga, extorting agreement to do this from the elders of Riga by force.
Under Bishop Albert.
The year 1201 also marked the first arrival of German merchants in Novgorod, via the Dvina. To defend territory and trade, Albert established the Order of Livonian Brothers of the Sword in 1202, which was open to nobles and merchants.
The Christianisation of the Livs continued. In 1207, Albert started to fortify the town. Emperor Philip invested Albert with Livonia as a fief and principality of the Holy Roman Empire. To promote a permanent military presence, territorial ownership was divided between the Church and the Order, with the Church taking Riga and two-thirds of all lands conquered and granting the Order a third. Until then, it had been customary for crusaders to serve for a year and then return home.
Albert had ensured Riga's commercial future by obtaining papal bulls which decreed that all German merchants had to carry on their Baltic trade through Riga. In 1211, Riga minted its first coinage, and Albert laid the cornerstone for the Riga Dom. Riga was not yet secure as an alliance of tribes failed to take Riga. In 1212, Albert led a campaign to compel Polotsk to grant German merchants free river passage. Polotsk conceded Kukenois (Koknese) and Jersika to Albert, also ending the Livs' tribute to Polotsk.
Riga's merchant citizenry chafed and sought greater autonomy from the Church. In 1221, they acquired the right to independently self-administer Riga and adopted a city constitution. thats all for now. thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps and for the love of Riga. goodbye. #riga #latvia #latvian #mapschool #mapsolo #maps #mapas
Memorial Site Liktendarzs
With support of the entire Latvian nation a memorial site “Liktendarzs” (Garden of destinies) is being created on an island in Koknese. No day passes without visitors coming here from all over Latvia. It is a memorial site to all those lost to Latvia in the 20th century – those who suffered from totalitarian regimes, those who were forced to exile, those who suffered based on their political views or family tree.
